New star Wood wants more

ALBION 11 DH 18Albion youngster Chris Wood today set his sights on more Premier League action after his shock senior debut at Portsmouth.

The 17-year-old played as a substitute ahead of Jay Simpson and Luke Moore just 24 hours after being drafted into the first-team squad.

“It was a great experience to get on and make my debut in the Premier League,” said the giant New Zealand youth international. “I found out I was travelling about an hour before the squad travelled on Friday. The gaffer asked if I’d got my tracksuit and I said I could get it.

“And he said I was travelling with them. I just had a big smile on my face.

“All my mates at the training ground could see it and they were all happy for me.

“I should have done better with a header. I got up ahead of Sol Campbell and it should have been in the back of the net. It was a great experience to be out there against those big professionals. The plan is hopefully to get on the bench and get a couple more games under my belt.

Albion captain Jonathan Greening has tipped Wood for a bright future after being impressed with the 6ft 3in tall forward on and off the pitch.

“I thought he was excellent when he came on,” said Greening. “He worked his socks off and deserved his chance.

“He got drafted in on Friday when Roman Bednar got injured. I’m really pleased for him. If you work hard as a young lad you’ll get your chances. He’s done that.”
