Ten could go in Albion summer cull

Friday 10th April 2009, 11:30AM BST.

WBA V BOLTON 14 EB 21Albion could sell up to 10 players in the summer to fund a revamp of the Hawthorns squad.

Manager Tony Mowbray might cash in on one of his stars, to raise transfer funds if the Baggies’ relegation is confirmed.

He hopes to fund his summer spending by offloading fringe players from his squad.

But, if those moves fail to happen, the manager might consider selling a ‘big hitter.’

He said: “If we’re going down we need to revamp. We need to make money to bring players in and the only way we’re going to do that is by selling players. There is no money to buy them. We need to generate money.

“I know we’ve got saleable assets, but the ones we sell will be the ones we want to sell.

“I would suggest that anybody who leaves our club will do so because we want him to leave – and I will tell people if that’s not the case.

“That might be to create some funds to redress the balance of the squad.”

Mowbray is under no financial pressure to sell players, with next year’s wage-bill for the existing players already budgeted for.

But he is keen to freshen up his squad and will need to raise any extra money in the transfer market.

He said: “There are still people from two years ago in the Championship who rarely play in the Premier League.

“If we go back to the Championship, I need to decide whether to freshen it up and give supporters new heroes.

“I may need to sell four, five, six, seven, up to 10 players that might create enough money for me to sign one or two players who would make all the difference.

“But I may well sell another player to generate money to bring in other players.”

Its the wrong time to be talking about this Tony.
Just when you need everyone to pull together to fight for the cause to avoid relegation you are causing uncertainty and speculation.
A few of the Prem managers especially the ones Albion still have to play, might just see this as an opportunity for a few mind games by announcing who they would like from your squad of players.
As You have brought the subject up, are these some of the players you have in mind???:-

On teletext TM is reported to have said that tomorrow ain’t a must win game and even if we lose it ain’t all over. Frank says he has hopes of being selected to go to the World Cup next year and suddenly , after never hearing from him , you can’t shut Peter Grant up. I don’t know what they’ve started injecting into the half time oranges at the Albion, but it sounds the bizness to me and if it’s cheaper than beer, put me down for some please.

Its funny to read how the constantly negative posters will always fing an angle to have a go about…. A few weeks ago when TM was defending the players in the press, people were demanding that he “get real” or “tell it like it is”.

Now that he is being honest about the players we have the “wrong time” or “unsettling the squad” comments… the bloke just can’t win. What a good job it is that he won’t care what you say – he is his own man and calls it like he sees it.

I look forward to reading you all trying to find a negative angle when we are top of the league and playing well…. oh hang on, thats the wolves aint it.

I would suggest that Tony stops using the phrase “I would suggest” & I would suggest that he admits that it is his fault entirely that we are going to be relegated. This, I would suggest, is because of his stubborn approach to how the game should be played. Pretty football in areas where no damage is inflicted on the opponents is no good at all as our points tally shows. A bit more of the Hull / Stoke approach was required & we would have stayed up. Before anyone points out that we aint down yet, get real!.

Happy old son, you’re wasting your time with the moaners. Take David, No.25. He’s saved £400 so he’s happy. NOBODY made him spend it last season although then, we had just won the CCC as CHAMPIONS! Maybe TM is warning some of the ‘couldn’t care less’ clan that they may be on the dole soon. They just might decide they’ve let him down and ‘put in a shift’ until the season’s end. Wulfies, don’t get all smart-arsed. There’s still time to blow it and even if you don’t, what makes you think you’ll do any better? There is a ‘Moment Of Truth’ for all boasters. To the JP knockers: we appear to be £7million overspent. How do you equate ‘MISER’ to that? Have you looked at your own credit balance to see how you manage your income? Hands up all those financial experts on here who are in the black down the local Barclays.
