Marlon backed by Wolves boss

Friday 10th April 2009, 11:18AM BST.

harewood1Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is confident Marlon Harewood can come good in time to boost the team’s flagging strikeforce.

Harewood endured a testing debut in the 2-0 defeat against Birmingham on Monday night, when he was also shipped out to the wing.

But the 29-year-old on-loan Villa forward was expected to take centre stage in more ways than one, as he prepared for his Molineux bow against Southampton with 40-goal strikeforce Chris Iwelumo and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake missing through injury.

Harewood admitted he felt his return to Championship action was a ‘wake-up call’ and, with just five games left, McCarthy is confident the former West Ham powerhouse can find his form quickly.

The manager said: “I have no doubts about him firing, no problem. In training, he’s been terrific and has impressed everyone.

“I think it was just a shock to the system, a case of ‘welcome back to the Championship’ and Birmingham versus Wolves was a real homecoming.

“Maybe his games have been more as a substitute than starting. But I still don’t think he performed any better or worse than anyone else on the pitch. It wasn’t an easy start for him.

“If you look at the games he’s played, he’s probably played in the UEFA Cup and came on as a substitute.

“There’s nothing wrong with him fitness-wise, he’s fine, but sometimes you get a bit of a jolt.

“Maybe playing in the Premier League for so long you forget what the Championship is like – how bloody tough and competitive it is.

“The Premier League is the be-all and end-all, yet when Premier League teams come up against Championship teams you see the difference – Burnley have had a few good results against top flight opposition, it’s difficult to play in.

“So maybe it was a bit of an eye-opener.”

McCarthy is without his three top scorers with winger Michael Kightly, but is confident he has the squad to cope.

The manager added: “We’ve got a good squad of players and if we miss them, we’re alright, that’s the main thing.”

Oh my god where did the boggie come from (12)? Have heard diddly squat from them all season on these pages until we lose a match and then they come crawling out of their little holes to make childish little comments! Get a life you idiot!

To throw Higgs in now would be suicide, playing Friend out of postion is retarded and Ebanks-Blake is injured. Only 4 subs and two you can’t even name. Playtime is over.

Sunshine, if I was a boggie I think it would be Malaga Blue and White Stripes.
No my little boy Malagablue is a Blues supporter who tells it how it is and doesn’t wear gold and black tinted glasses.
I will say it again just for your simple mind.
You are NOT going to win today and you know it. We will win tomorrow and you know what that means don’t you?
You obviously don’t read these pages very often because I told you before the match on Monday that you were not good enough and you wouldn’t beat the Blues.
You have blown it big time and just for you I will repeat what I said on these pages the other day.
You probably have enough points now to make the play offs but you haven’t got the BOTTLE to win them.
(Boing Boing) is just to remind you who you will be playing next season wolf72.
