Horror of cave fall survivor
Thursday 9th April 2009, 11:30AM BST.
A teenager seriously injured when part of a cave collapsed, killing her friend, today spoke of her “complete devastation”.
Jess Wright was camping with Aiden Brookes, 16, and a group of about 20 friends on Sunday night at the Hermitage Caves in Bridgnorth when the tragedy happened.
The 18-year-old, of The Hobbins, Bridgnorth, was only told about Aiden’s death yesterday to save her from further distress. Today she described how she was standing up in the cave near Aiden who was asleep just before the accident.
She said suddenly rocks started to fall and she was hit on the head, neck and back, knocking her unconscious.
Jess said: “When I woke up I was asking about Aiden. I knew he was a lot worse off than me.”
Aiden’s inquest was due to be opened today in Bridgnorth.
