Used car review: Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Iain Dooley checks out the classy Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The E-Class is a car that highlights all that is right about the Mercedes brand and a used model offers business class motoring for sensible money.

The previous (eighth) generation car was launched in 2002 in saloon form. A wide range of petrol and diesel engines was offered, plus a long list of standard and optional equipment.

Avantgarde and Elegance have proved to be the popular trim choices.

Low cost models come with a manual gearbox; auto is a cost option but standard on higher value cars.

Engines

There’s no shortage of choice in this department.

Be warned that the numbering convention doesn’t always match the engine exactly.

It doesn’t really matter anyway as the four-cylinder diesels are the ones to buy – the 220 CDI and 280 CDI are particularly good.

Exterior

With its elegant curves and distinguished appearance it’s impossible not to like this version of the popular E-Class. Also, in saloon form the car hides its voluminous boot well.

Interior

The cabins are expertly constructed and are full of the finest materials. The interior is both roomy and full of business class touches.

And as you would expect, noise levels are very low when on the move.

Driving

Although not a sports saloon, the E-Class can be hustled about with confidence – the facelift cars boast sharper handling and steering.

The rest of the time it performs exceptionally well as a limousine, with its smooth, quiet engines complementing the plush, relaxed ride.

Ownership

Despite the car’s size and the wealth of technology it packs, the E-Class is a remarkably easy car to live with.

An auto gearbox is a must for the full experience – and to improve resale values – while cruise control and parking sensors make motorway and town driving easy respectively.

What To Look For

High mileage ex-private hire cars can look tatty and could have expensive gaps in their service history.

Elsewhere, make sure all the various gadgets work and the car rides and drives like new on the test run. A full history is a must, as is a blemish free interior and exterior.
