Air pistol taken off schoolgirl

Monday 6th April 2009, 3:57PM BST.

oldburyschoolAn air pistol was confiscated from a girl at a Sandwell school, it has emerged. The pupil was found with the weapon at Oldbury College of Sport.

Education chiefs are in talks with the headteacher at the Pound Lane school over the incident, which happened back in January.

Sandwell’s education boss Councillor Ian Jones said he was “fuming” after only finding out the pistol had been discovered when a worried parent contacted the Express & Star. He said the local education authority should have been contacted immediately.

“We are investigating the incident and the actions of the school in relation to what happened,” he said.

“We have been told the weapon was an air pistol which was handed to the police. Again we are still talking to the school to establish the details of what happened and whether the action taken by Oldbury College of Sport was appropriate. Senior officers have spoke to the headteacher and there will be a full report made into what has happened. We are very concerned about this.”

The weapon is not thought to have been discharged and the pupil involved is believed to still be at the school.

Head John Martin was unavailable for comment.
