Wolves today sealed a two-year shirt sponsorship deal with an online betting firm that will net the club at least £1m.

The seven-figure link-up with Sportingbet.com will start in June and will be the most lucrative sponsorship package in the club’s history.

The deal is worth a guaranteed £1m over two years to the Molineux club but the figure will rise further if Mick McCarthy’s team wrap up promotion to the Premier League.

Sportingbet.com will sponsors Wolves’ shirts and the official club website as well as becoming the club’s official betting partner.

The news marks the end of Wolves’ five-year shirt sponsorship agreement with Chaucer but Bob Laslett, chief executive of the consultancy firm, will remain on the Molineux board and the company will stay on as commercial partners.

I think this is a wise move as it seems like a good deal, and bookmakers seem to be relatively “recession proof” so they should be a fairly safe bet (no pun intended)for the time being.

3 years ago things looked bleak after we were ‘twaddled’. We had alot of players leave, no parachute payments, 12 pro’s and mick took over with his famous merlin the magician comments! I went to Cardiff we lost 4-0 but the away end was packed and after the game everyone was singing ‘the wanderers will never die’. That season Mick exceeded all of our expectations. 2 and 3/4 seasons on we have the title in our own hands with the 2nd youngest squad in the championship, no parachute payments, the clubs biggest ever sponsorship deal (during a recession), record early bird season tickets, turnover at an all time high and some of the best young players in the country. Well done to everyone at WWFC. Cocky albion hard times await for you.

Great news that we have got the biggest sponsorship deal in our history – well done to everyone at the club for this success.

it’s a bit sobering though really isn’t it – we get £1m over two years while Utd get £50m over 5 years. Liverpool are now talking about a £60m sponsorship over 5 years.

Does anyone else wonder how we are ever supposed to compete with these teams? it’s getting to the stage that even scoring a goal should be considered success when playing these teams let alone winning a game!

If I remember correctly the home & away shirts are being changed every season. I’m sure the club announced that last summer. Personally being an adidas addict, I’m hoping the Wolves will be sporting 3 stripes in the near future too (oh & premier league badge on each sleeve)!

Best realistic players we can hope for over the summer are (I would be happy with any of 3 of these):
    Benjani
    Caicedo
    Daniel Sturridge (loan)
    Ramsey (loan)
    Wilshire (loan)
    Roger Johnson
Vela(loan)(as arsenal already have adebayor, van persie, walcott, arshavin, bendtner etc up front)
    Roger Johnson
Beckford (heard from a good source we have already struck a deal for huim if they donbt go up)
    Sol Campbell (loan)
    Carsley
    Scotland
    Boddie
    gunter
    Frazier Campbell
    Hreidarsson
    Hayden Mullins

Players who I’d like us to try and get but WILL go to bigger prem clubs than us will be:
    Huddlestone
    Ledley
    Doyle
    Bale
    O’Hara
    Zokora
    Fabian Delph

Also please don’t sign Stephen Hunt, all the reading fans says he hasn’t look interested since before xmas. We desperately need a holding midfielder with prem experience if we go up please MM!!!
Im sure MM has a few gems that he’ll pull out the bag that no one sees coming tho!!

Considering that Wolves have only just won an award for being such a family-orientated club, it was with extreme irony that I viewed the news of our new shirt sponsorship. Drink, dugs and gambling have wrecked many a happy home. That’s just a personal opinion, however, and I accept the club has to take the best offer available. It hardly enhances club’s image, though.

This deal is cheap at the price now that Wolves are almost certain to go up. The TV world wide exposure despite the global economy for an online bookies is worth a lot more than this.
Sponsors would have come on board once promotion was certain, look at F1 and Virgin’s investment.
We may have jumped the gun with this deal.

Have to agree with 41 DingleShandee. People who focus on the significant social cost of gambling in the UK and the fact that our club has accepted a million pounds to get all ages of people in the area to promote this activity make me laugh. Was anyone proud that we won the family club of the year award? Not me – nice is for wimps. You don’t have to bet – the fact that the activity is highly addictive to a number of people and ruins lives is irrelevant. It doesn’t stop tobacco advertising, or alcohol or drugs – does it

Number 4 Totally agree. The Chaucer logo has a certain amount of style to it and I, for one, will not be in any rush to trade in my current home and away kit for the simple reason that the sporting bet logo is goin to, lets face it, look a bit Chavvy on the Old Gold! Think Doritos re-incarnated.

As I said, I’m not particularly keen on the idea of betting being advertised (as is my privilege, or do I need your permission?), yet I also acknowledged that, commercially speaking, I fully understand the club’s policy. Of course carrying a sponsor’s name/logo doesn’t mean that anyone who sees it has to gamble and I’m not saying it does. But it does somehow speak of endorsement – and that’s surely a two-way street – and carries with it a message of acceptability. I thought the same when Boro took the sponsorship firm and I couldn’t care less about them. Couldn’t give a monkeys if you agree with me or not and I’m not trying to make you think the same as me either. I just wanted to get it off my chest that’s all.
