Macari blast for Baggies boss

Tuesday 31st March 2009, 1:32PM BST.

1423572Former Stoke manager Lou Macari has launched an astonishing blast at Albion boss Tony Mowbray ahead of the clubs’ crunch meeting on Saturday.

Four days before the Baggies’ must-win meeting with the Potters, Macari questioned Albion’s fighting spirit and accused Mowbray of getting the Premier League campaign ‘totally wrong’.

Writing in a newspaper column in the Potteries, Macari backed Stoke’s battling style under Tony Pulis to beat the Baggies’ footballing approach.

He said: “While Stoke are up for a battle every day of the week, you have to wonder what Albion are about. I said from day one this season that I feared more for them than the other two promoted clubs, Stoke and Hull.

“One look at the present league table would suggest the Stoke manager has his approach and tactics right, while the Albion manager has got it completely wrong.

“I still shake my head and wonder what Tony Mowbray is up to.

“He played for me at Celtic and was a real warrior of a centre-half – a natural leader and winner, a Denis Smith type whose approach was ‘Thou Shalt Not Pass’.

“But he has undergone some kind of religious conversion since going into management, because it seems to be a case of play football at all costs.

“That’s all well and good if you have the players, but it’s patently obvious to me that his side simply don’t have the right quality to carry it off.

“Put me in the trenches with either the Stoke or the Albion lads and I know where my preference would be.”

He’s entitled to his opinion and looking at the table it’s hard to disagree. I think that Tony Mowbray will have learnt more from this season than in all of his previous career and what he’s learnt will stand us in good stead for years to come. We’ll really see who’s got it right in three or four years time.

I have followed Albion all my life, we had a great oportunity again to catch up on all the wasted years & blew it again, it is so saddening to witness the likes of Villa now prospering when they were nothing at one time a 3rd division team, they hung around in the top tier while we languished. And Lou is dead right.

    Lou Macari.
Managed Swindon to a couple of lower tier promotions.
Did nothing at West Ham United.
    Did nothing at Birmingham City.
Got a lower tier promotion and the mickey mouse cup under his belt at Stoke.
Did nothing at Celtic (which is against the odds isnt it)
Lost a playoff final in his second stint at Stoke
Finally he managed Huddersfield where he is only ‘achievement’ was to get them relegated.

    Compare to Tony Mowbray.
    At Hibernian
Won the manager of the year
Finished in the top 4 for 2 consecutive seasons for the first time since the 70s
Progressed to the later stages of all domestic cup competitions they entered
    At Albion
Wembley in successive seasons for the first time in 40 years
Title for the first time in 88 years
Top scorers for two successive seasons
Beat the same local rivals 4 times in the same season.

Tony Mobray will become a good Manager in time, but he has made mistakes this season and most of what Lou said is true.
Albion play good football, but lack strength in Midfield and defence.

It may be ok to keep them up but I don’t think their football would keep me awake for 90 minutes. I also hate the reference that LM said he feared for us at the start. This suggests he thought about it. Its such a shame that such a tallented player has such little tallent off the pitch. Every every dog has his day then LM should have been put down when at St Andrews!!. This is just a looser trying to remind people that his there and trying to get a job. Not sure why some people are saying Lou Macari is right – we have tried to do things the Stoke way in previous seasons (Megson and Robson) and it just didn’t work out. Ant to be honest, it may not work out for Stoke yet either. We do need to improve defensively and play with more aggression: but that doesnt mean resorting to Wimbledon style antics.

Lou is entitled to his view, and let’s accept it, as well as keep it in context.

From my recollection, he never played the “Beautiful Game”, nor did he ever manage a team playing the BG.

So why should we be the least surprised when he is unable to appreciate a team trying to play the BG, when he stands and chucks in from the sidelines?

We all know that TM is on a learning curve, and that he will improve.

Apart from a little incentive to the Baggies, there is little else that Lou really has added to the mixing pot here from my perspective.

It is not what Lou thinks that interests me, but that he Thinks …

    Lou Macari
BACK TO BACK promotions with Swindon Town
Difficulty with Chairman in brief stints with West Ham and Birmingham
Takes Stoke to a Wembley win, and playoffs in FIRST season
Wins promotion as champions with a club record 93 points in second season
Lands dream job managing one of the biggest clubs in Scotland, finishing in the top 2 ;)
Return to Stoke, where he fires a struggling team into the playoffs
Spell at Huddersfield which ultimately see’s him relegated

    Tony Mowbray
Two seasons at with a Hibs in a mickey mouse league brings small success, but no trophys.
Fails to get a BIG championship club promoted at first try
Regularly fails to beat local rivals Stoke City
    Wins promotion in second season
(?)Guides WBA to relegation by easter…(?)

Now I wouldn’t say either of us have been fair in our comparisons, I’m merely illustrating a point.

To suggest Macari has made an “astonishing blast” at WBA in the article is quite clearly sensationalism. He is a newspaper pundit and was merely pointing to the merits of a certain style of play. I have absolutely nothing against WBA (difficult to hate a team who have been so generous to us in recent years) but Mowbrays stubborn determination to stick to his “footballing principles” will see you relegated this season.

Stoke might not be attractive but you cannot hope to come into the premiership and “out-football” the established premiership teams. That can be the long term goal, but the first two seasons also require grit and determination.

What an idiotic argument to use when trying to “big up” a very small (in more ways than one) man. I could manage Celtic to 2nd place in the Scottish League.

We’ll see what happens on Saturday, but even if the Albion go down I’d still rather watch football under Mowbray than the dross on offer at The Brittania Stadium. Supporting a Club with the Footballing traditions as the Albion is an honour and a privelage – something Stoke fans certainly cannot say.

Villa were in the right place at the right time when the Premier League started. We hadn’t got a pot to p*** in. Once the PL got under way, it channeled all of the revenue into it and everyone else was playing catch up. We still are, along with Wolves, Blues and many others.
Your criticism of multi millionaire Jeremy Peace’s lack of business acumen is interesting. If you are a better businessman and therefore I assume richer, why not throw a few mill into the club?

    20 Tubes.
Agree with you, it’s all about how you read things but I think the reaction has been brought about by the E&S headline and cherrypicking of LM’s comments. His teams always played kick and rush, therefore along with his Stoke affiliations he was bound to lean the way he did. Football is all about opinions isn’t it?

his point may be valid….but only if Stoke manage to beat the drop (I’m assuming that Albion will go down this year…sorry). If they fail to avoid relegation then I don’t see the benefit of playing “lump it” football. At least Albion fans have seen some decent football – probably not enough to stay in the division. I can’t see that Stoke fans have seen any good football – glorious failure is still failure. If you look at the money needed to stay in that division then both teams should probably have expected to be relegated this year so then you look towards the style of play that will help you build best for the future which, to me, looks like Albion’s way.

whoever gets up this year will have the same struggles and the same decisions to make.
