Used car review: BMW Z4
Monday 30th March 2009, 2:00PM BST.
Iain Dooley checks out BMW’s rakish looking Z4 convertible.
In 2003 BMW launched a radical looking replacement for its Z3 roadster convertible.
The rear-wheel drive Z4 shared its predecessor’s dramatic looks but was bigger and came with a stiffer chassis.
There was a modest choice of four and six-cylinder petrol engines offered. Both manual and automatic gearboxes were available, depending on the choice engine choice.
The car was built at BMW’s US plant in South Carolina.
Engines
Following the car’s launch the engine range steadily expanded to include a modest 2.2-litre four-cylinder motor and a gutsy 3.0-litre unit. If you can afford it go for the latter, as it offers the best performance, although those on a budget shouldn’t dismiss the former.
Exterior
Generating both positive and negative comments, the Z4′s looks are certainly bold. The car’s long bonnet and stubby tail contribute to the classic roadster proportions. And fortunately the car looks good with the rood up as well as down.
Interior
Taking the minimalist concept to the extreme, the Z4′s cabin is a simple affair and compliments the rakish exterior. A strict two-seater, the Z4′s cabin is surprisingly roomy.
Driving
With its potent engines and traditional rear-wheel drive layout, the Z4 is an exciting proposition. The car’s firm ride, direct steering and sporty character is sure to please keen drivers.
Ownership
More versatile than you might think – decent cabin storage space and a reasonable boot – the Z4 could easily be your only car.
You won’t be transporting anything bulky back from IKEA but the compact BMW roadster is far from impractical. The power folding roof offers a good level of cabin refinement when raised.
What To Look For
Used and abused city cars will always been an issue – something all desirable roadsters suffer from. A faulty roof and folding mechanism could see a large repair bill looming, while repaired crash damage is something you should always be suspicious of – along with an incomplete service history.
SECOND GLANCE:
Reasons to Buy:
Radical styling, good fun to drive, roof-up refinement.
Reasons to Beware:
Abused cars used as city runabouts, incomplete history and bodged crash repairs, basic, poorly equipped cars.
Pick of the Range:
Z4 3.0i SE.
What to Pay:
2004 04 – £10,935
2004 54 – £11,345
2005 05 – £12,595
2005 55 – £13,055
2006 06 – £14,570
