Sylvan honoured at awards dinner

Monday 30th March 2009, 11:35AM BST.

WANDERERS 7 GD 22Goal machine Sylvan Ebanks-Blake celebrated another strike at the Football League awards dinner by insisting – “the most important prize is still to come.”

The 24-goal striker was named the Championship’s Player of the Year, while his memorable goal at Charlton towards the end of last season was acclaimed as the best for the calendar year of 2008.

With Wolves also named Family Club of the Year, it completed a terrific hat-trick for Molineux at the League’s awards night in London, but the man who has now rattled in 36 goals from just 58 matches admits it will count for nothing without the most coveted award of all – promotion.

He said: “So far it’s been a very good year – but the most important one is still out there. Getting promoted and Wolves winning the title is what I’d like more than anything.

“Picking up the individual accolades is great but, without getting too greedy, it’s the promotion that we all really want.

“There are still six games remaining and a lot can change in that time, so we need to stay focused. If we win our games we can control what we do and hopefully that will get us there.”

Manager Mick McCarthy, having seen his hunch about Ebanks-Blake backed by the forward hitting a remarkable strike rate of a goal every 1.6 games, hailed the impact of the £1.5million striker.

He said: “Ever since he arrived he has made a huge impact on the place and long may he continue to do so.”

The awards will be particularly satisfying for the Wolves striker as they reflect opinion from both fans and the professionals.

The Player of the Year is decided by a combination of votes from fans, players and managers. Team-mate Michael Kightly was third.

The Mitre Goal of the Year was selected after each club nominated one goal, which were then whittled down by viewers of the popular Soccer AM TV football show to a shortlist of five.

It was then up to the gathering, packed with managers, coaches, players and officials from across the League, to pick a winner.

Ex-Walsall striker Matty Fryatt, now leading Leicester’s promotion bid in League One, was named that division’s Player of the Year.

Yes I can think of one important thing. This is to cement Wolves place in the Premiership and stay there.
So come on SEB give us some more magic moments in this 132nd year since Wolves were founded. You made all Wolves fans around the world proud by your achievements.

I hear Villa have quoted £3 million for Harewood, are they having a joke or what?? I would want a slightly younger forward next season anyway to start alongside SEB with Harewood as a squad player for 1-1.5 million at most!! We can get far better value going after the Championships’ best players, e.g. McCormack, or particularly Doyle at Reading and they are a better age than Harewood.

Now pay Seb enough to keep Everton away. We get promoted and Reading don’t then let’s nick Doyle and that bad tempered paddy who’s name escapes me. I think Harewood is overpriced before I’ve seen him play if the price tag is true.

Great to see his work recognized by all across the board, players, managers, fans, the lot. His goal ratio has been phenomenal since he came to Wolves; there is no way his is going to be able to maintain that in the Premiership, but next season, if he can keep scoring there is no reason why Fab’s won’t be having a close look at him. As for all this talk about he should be playing Wednesday, let’s remember he is racing to get fit for a league game that is still seven days away- let him get fit- I think this is another huge boost and with his confidence sky high Blues should be terrified. Let’s also tilt our caps to the man who signed him, thats right, Big Mick. Look at the players he has brought in and surely the knockers must finally be ready to give him a break and go into these last six games giving every ounce of support for our title winning team. Full confidence. It’s happening.

    here are the stats.
Three points and we’re certain to be in playoffs.
ten more points mean cardiff, sheff utd and burnley cannot catch us. 13 points and we’re certain to be up.
    14b points and we’re champions.

However our competitors are playing each other a lot.
    Brum play three top sixers.
Reading play three top sixers and Coventry away
Cardiff play two top sixers and preston/ \palace away.
Sheff utd have Reading, Burnley, palace away and swansea at home.
Burnley have Sheff utd, bristol and cardiff

The top sixers are gonna lose a lot of points between them and I would guess if we get 10 more points we will be fine

Those of you wanting Doyle if Reading don’t go up. I’m afraid he won’t be of massive benefit to us in the Prem. He was average for Ireland against Bulgaria and hasn’t made stand out performances for the Boys in Green in any of their matches. On the subject, McShane was a waste of skin at right back for Ireland the other night and I am clueless as to why Trappatoni doesn’t play our very talented Kevin Foley. Poor Kevin must wonder what he has to do to get a game for Ireland. I know most of you will cringe at this idea, but if you want an angry Irish man in Midfield with a bit of Premier class, Keith Andrews just gets better and better. He was by far the best player For Ireland the other night and yes I do mean better than our Green God; Robbie Keane.

We need an attacking line up for the Blues. I would like to see Jarvis and Kites on the flanks with Harewood and SEB in the centre. Win this and we are almost there.
