Rugby club gets scrummy new style

wd3257273rugby-1-tt-26A rugby club is celebrating the completion of its new £600,000 changing rooms to replace “tired” facilities in the Black Country.

After wet weather delayed the makeover of the rugby rooms at Dudley Kingswinford Rugby Club, the finishing touches are now finally being made.

Club officials today said they hoped to hold an official opening ceremony at the beginning of the new season.

Manager Roger Port said players were already using the changing rooms at the ground in Swindon Road, Wall Heath.

The revamp was expected to be completed in January but work was held up.

Home and away players will be able to take advantage of eight new changing rooms with showers, kit room, ball room and toilets. The scheme also includes rooms for the referee and first aid team.

The old changing room block, which dated back to 1963, was described by players and officials as “tired and outdated” and in need of refurbishment. It was demolished in May last year to make way for the new, building, which the club hopes will be used by teams for years to come. Mr Port said: “The existing changing rooms were 45 years old and we had been looking at refurbishing them for some time.

“The new facilities will be there for the future of the club,” he added. The youth of today will be the players of tomorrow.”

Mr Port, who stood down as chairman after 18 years last year, said cash for the project had come from a number of private sources as well as club funds.
