Morley lashes out at O’Neill
Saturday 28th March 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
Former winger Tony Morley today became the latest Villa legend to question Martin O’Neill’s tactics, after admitting the chance to face out-of-position full-back Nigel Reo-Coker would ‘fill him with joy’.
Just days after fellow European Cup winner Dennis Mortimer took a pop at O’Neill, Morley has criticised the Villa manager’s decision to deploy midfielder Reo-Coker at right-back following his nightmare afternoon at Anfield last Sunday.
Reo-Coker was given a torrid time by Spanish winger Albert Riera during Liverpool’s 5-0 win and was at least partly to blame for two of the Reds’ goals.
And Morley revealed facing a midfielder playing full-back is every winger’s dream.
“It would fill me with joy if I was playing against a midfielder at full-back,” said Morley, speaking at the launch of the Aston Villa Former Players Association’s new sponsorship deal.
“I would love it. We all know in the modern game you’re not allowed to tackle so if you run at defenders they just let you past.
“Unfortunately I didn’t have that luxury in my time.
“It’s very similar to the best 20 minutes I’ve seen Ashley Young play for Villa which was in the first half against Tottenham against (Didier) Zokora.
“I’ve got sympathy for Nigel, he’s a good professional.
“Obviously it would have hurt him. It’s not his position.”
And at 24, Morley insists Reo-Coker is now too old to make the transition in position.
“At his age now he’s never going to be a right back,” he added.
“Personally, I think once you get to a certain age you can’t completely change positions.”
Mortimer recently clai-med struggling striker Gabby Agbonlahor should have been taken out of the firing line long before he was targeted by fans.
“What’s happened with Agbonlahor has been coming . . . Martin O’Neill might have managed that situation a little better and taken him out of the side,” he said.
And the former Villa skipper criticised O’Neill’s decision to field a severely weakened side in the UEFA Cup defeat to CSKA Moscow which ended Villa’s involvement in the competition.
“In some ways the fans have been short-changed because Villa could have gone on in the UEFA Cup,” he added.
“The club have not respected the wishes of the fans by winning a trophy.
“They decided the Champions League was the goal but there is no trophy at the end of that.”

The UEFA cup is the biggest trophy AVFC will ever win again. They should have concentrated on that instwad of 4th place in the PL. M O Niell has not got what it takes to take AVFC to the next level.

2. What a stupid comment!!! How would you know what level he could take Villa to, we have the money, the know how, and the willingness to go further than you may think.
Wolves and mad mick might get to the next level (the Prem) but enjoy it while you can, you wont be there for long.
I wonder why it is, that second raters and no hopers, always seem to have the answers for clubs that are much more successful than they are ever likely to be.
WBA are a far superior club and team than Wolves and look whats happening to them, at least they will come back and stay there, I cant see Wolves having more than one season.
