Coseley’s Richard Ghent has been tipped to conquer the lightweight division – but first the light-welterweight experience continues.

The young prospect has spent the first two fights of his professional career in the latter division but trainer Paul Gough believes the 21-year-old is merely preparing to drop the five-or-so pounds needed to make the grade below.

By spending his first few bouts at a heavier weight, Ghent comes up against naturally stronger opponents but – as a quick footed style of boxer – such experience is commonplace for a relatively inexperienced fighter.

The step to 9st 6lb should not be difficult, but succeeding in a division containing the likes of Walsall’s Martin Gethin, ‘The Wednesfield Bomber’ Steve Saville and British champion John Murray could be.

But Gethin and Ghent work together already, so the former Priory Park ABC amateur should know what to expect, with his cohort – who takes on John Murray at the Liverpool Echo Arena tonight in a British title eliminator – one of the brightest around.

Gough has every confidence his charge would take such a step in his stride.

The trainer said: “I have got very high hopes for Richard. He was an excellent amateur and is settling into the pro game very well now. I think he is a naturally a lightweight, but to have him in this division with heavier and stronger opponents is great for his development.

“He has not looked out of place in any arena, but the plan down the line is for him to go to lightweight as a strong contender. He does a lot of his sparring with Martin – who is a British title contender – so that is more experience for him.

“Richard could drop a division whenever he chooses – it’s just waiting for the right time.”
