Harewood aims to make class tell

Saturday 28th March 2009, 11:29AM GMT.

wd3258267wolves-9-tt-271Marlon Harewood has stepped into the Championship promotion race determined to remind football he is still a Premier League player.

Harewood made a big impact in his first training session with his new Wolves team mates yesterday and is now itching for the opportunity to carry that forward in to the thick of the promotion battle.

The 29-year-old striker has been kicking his heels for nearly two years at Villa Park having started just one Premier League game since signing for Martin O’Neill in the summer of 2007.

With one year of his Villa contract still remaining, Harewood is refusing to look beyond the short-term six-game opportunity beckoning at Molineux – but he is aiming to take out that frustration on the six Championship defences now standing between Wolves and their dreams of promotion.

“I still feel I’m a Premier League player,” says Harewood. “But I don’t know what to expect of myself in this little spell because I haven’t been playing much!

“All I want to do is help these boys get promoted. I’ve only had one training session with them so far but I can tell straight away they are a brilliant set of lads. They’ve been great with me. I feel I’ve got a lot of football in me. I’ve played a handful of games in the last couple of years and I am just eager to get some football again.

“I’ve had no guarantees from Mick about playing. I just wanted to come and help them out and whatever I can bring I will do my best to add. If I play six games then fine. But the lads have done really well to get to where they are and they’ve already got one of the top goalscorers in the Championship.

“And what a great game to start with – Birmingham City away!”

Already there is excitement within the Wolves camp at what Harewood could bring to the team. After yesterday’s first training session, midfielder David Jones reported: “You could tell from the start that Marlon is a Premier League player. He was quality – immediately on the same wavelength as the lads. I hope I am in the team when he plays that’s for sure.”

Wolves fans will already be wondering whether the loan is the prelude to permanent deal in the event of player and club reaching their twin targets – goals from the striker and promotion for the team.

Harewood added: “I’m not looking beyond that. I’m still a Villa player with another year on my contract and whatever happens I will report back there after this loan is over.”

I think lets just get him for six games and see how he performs. We have a young team, but his experience may be valuable.

I am certaing that Harweood will put 110% in if he plays as he has a point to prove and needs to resuce his career also.

I will be in the pub, health permitting, to watch the destruction of Brums hopes of automatic promotion next week.
Harewood has such a huge point to prove that if I were MM I would hold him back on the bench until half time whether we are winning or not chuck him on then he will destroy the Blues modest defence.
A big win here win virtually close out the season.

    The Usual Suspects

Marlon Harewood proved the Forest pundits wrong (Kenny Burns) who kept slating him on a football phone in (Century 106)regular as clockwork – He then went to West Ham and scored goals for them in the Prem!

I hope he gets the same mental frame of mind to show what Villa are missing – and what better way to do it then to start at Blues?

Maybe hold him back – let SEB and Big Chris start for the first 65/ 70 mins and then let him loose when the Blues central pair are starting to flag – oooh I’m sooo excited!

    UP THE WOLVES!!!

    C’mon me Babbbiiiieees!

The “Hare” will keep our strikers on there toes as he will be breathing down their necks, and he is an “insurance policy” should we suffer any injuries, he will hopfully bring in a bit of stability and maturity to our side.
hope he get a shirt ~ but his proffesionalisum should help out.
a good signing at this stage of the season.

It’s good the younger lads will see the big step-up to being a Premiership player.
With players like him on the training ground it will help them adjust to the pace and more physical side of top flight football.
Wether he plays or not the experience they will gain will be invaluable.
Oh and a Hat-trick against the Blues will also help.
Nice to see Graham Stack back to calm any nerves in the dressing room over the next 6 games too.

I appreciate his honesty, and to not promise us anything but the six games he is here for I respect and hope he can do the same when he is on the field playing for us.
I think Harewood will give us another dimension that none of the teams we have left to play will know about, because as it stands the games are getting closer as each and every team becomes used to each other, and having something different might just be enough to see us over the line.
Good luck to all the players and staff for the run in.
And come on lets cheer them home and then we can have one big PARRRRRRRTY

    26. The stats from 130 years of average attendances (for West Mids clubs) are as follows:
    Villa 27,992
    Wolves 20,328
    Blues 20,185
    Albion 19,005
Wolves and Blues are 14th and 15th best supported clubs respectively. These figures are the most accurate of all because they include all attendances for all league matches since clubs were formed.
Considering we’ve never won anything of note, how come your average is just 143 more than ours???

You forget ZuluBlue that you have spent considerably more time in the Premiership than Wolves in recent years. We also only had two stands open for several years and of course slid down to the old fourth divison. Anyway I’m looking at the present and this seasons crowds don’t lie. We are currently a far better supported club than Birmingham are who seemed to have lost ten thousand fans in the space of a season! You can argue and post stats all you like but even you know deep down that Wolves are a bigger club than Birmingham. Both the past and present prove that!
