This is the first picture of the motorist left badly injured when a three foot piece of metal crashed through his car windscreen.
Karl Duce, aged 27, remained in a critical condition in hospital after the slab smashed through the windscreen of the blue VW Golf on Wergs Road, Tettenhall in Wolverhampton.
Police believe the metal bar, which weighs almost two stone, may have fallen from the back of a passing lorry. A passenger in the vehicle was left shocked but uninjured in the accident which happened at around 3.15pm on Wednesday.
Wergs Road was closed between Yew Tree Lane and the Wrottesley Park Road traffic lights until 8.25pm.
Anyone with information has been asked to contact police on 0845 113 5000.
