Poll amazed by Friedel U-turn

Poll 1 RH 26Former Premier League referee Graham Poll is amazed by the Football Association’s decision to overturn Villa keeper Brad Friedel’s red card against Liverpool.

Friedel was sent off for bringing down Fernando Torres inside the box, during Sunday’s 5-0 defeat at Anfield but won his appeal against the dismissal on Tuesday.

The verdict is believed to have infuriated leading referees, governed by the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, who are writing to the FA to demand an explanation.

Poll, at Molineux as a guest speaker at a celebrity dinner held by Dudley Rotary Club, sympathises with his former colleagues’ frustrations and revealed he even thought Friedel’s suspension could have been extended.

The referee can speak from 14 years as a Premier League official, with a CV including two World Cups and a UEFA Cup final.

He said: “The only red cards they are supposed to overturn are ones that are clearly wrong. That’s their rules.

“The FA don’t explain why it is wrong. That is the issue I have. Then we can understand because the referees at the top level – I still speak to them – are mystified as to what goes on.

“I even had it down as a possibility they would add an extra match suspension for what they used to term a ‘frivolous appeal’, one with little chance of success.

“Does it undermine referees? Of course. A referee will send someone off on Saturday for the same offence.

“The player will complain bitterly pointing to the Friedel case, so the referee will be liable for more abuse this Saturday than he would have been had the FA stuck with their original decision.”

your wrong mr poll,he got it completely wrong. To many reffs seem to want to be in the headlines,we seem to be talking about reff decisions more than the games that are played..but i do think once a decision has been made in a game thats it move on.Its getting to a stage clubs appeal any decision they think might be wrong, its a farce.

nothing to do with the fact that friedel was clearly trying to avoid contact with torres, as the tv footage clearly shows, or that the first goal from the free kick for a foul that never was !!

I don’t see how the ref got it wrong? Friedel clearly brought the player down, in the box, was last man and denied him a goal scoring opportunity. Whether Friedel meant it or not is immaterial.

The law states in such circumstances that it’s a sending off. I personally don’t see what else the ref could have done. The only contentious thing about it is whether he would have made the same decision against the Liverpool goalie, bearing in mind the game was at Anfield.

I think every decision is about the initial thought and view of the official.
The issue here is that the FA should be using the TV as well as the players, Incidents NOT caught by the Ref should be investigated and punishments given.
I get frustrated at the comments by the pundits, who sit in their studios andcomment after seeing things in slow motion and different angles.

They clearly need to chenge the rule- what was friedel supposed to do? The reversal makes complete sense.
