Lichfield Council gets cash boost
Friday 27th March 2009, 11:17AM GMT.
Cash from deals with developers is helping Lichfield District Council to support a number of new community developments.
The Section 106 money is triggered when a development scheme gets the go ahead in the district. Planners negotiate with the developers who agree to give a proportion of their projected profits for the council to spend on local community schemes.
Thanks to £26,000 and an additional £10,000 the security at Burntwood Park has been improved.
The project, helped by the £10k from Lichfield District Safer Community Partnership, followed complaints about acts of vandalism and other anti-social behaviour in the park.
After consulting with local people and agencies, the park has been gated off so it can be locked after hours, fencing has been put up, and areas of the ground have been resurfaced.
The council’s cabinet member for community, housing and health Councillor Ben Adams said: “We hope these works will dramatically cut instances of anti social behaviour in the park.
“This will come as a welcome relief to nearby residents, who should not have to put up with people who think it is okay to cause a nuisance.
“This type of project is a great example of how we can use Section 106 funding to improve the lives of the community.”
The 6th Lichfield Scouts got £100,000 to help get a £225,000 building project at its headquarters off the ground. Work is nearly finished on the new headquarters, off Christchurch Lane.
Cub scout leader John Brookes said: “We desperately needed a new headquarters because our old one started to get really shabby. I thank Lichfield District Council for its help.”
