Wolves heading for Oz trip
Thursday 26th March 2009, 12:40PM GMT.
Australian club Perth Glory were today claiming a coup in arranging a pre-season friendly with Wolves down under in July.
But Molineux officials cautioned Wolves fans against re-arranging summer plans as the two clubs have yet to conclude negotiations for the game scheduled to be played at Perth’s Members Equity Stadium.
Talks are at an advanced stage, however, and clearly indicate Wolves planning a pre-season tour to the A League circuit in what supporters will hope will be part of the preparations for Premier League campaign.
“We are in talks about a possible trip to Perth in July but nothing is signed and sealed at the moment,” said Wolves’ club secretary Richard Skirrow.
“We would ask fans to await further news which will be revealed as soon as any arrangements are confirmed.”
But Glory coach Dave Mitchell, an old friend of Wolves manager Mick McCarthy, is clearly confident the deal is as good as sealed and is already talking up what they believe will be a significant fixture for the Perth club.
“I have no doubt that it will be a hard fought game but played in the right spirit,” Mitchell said.
“They’re well managed by Mick McCarthy who is a no nonsense bloke. I know him well and we’ve kept in touch so it’ll be great to come up against him.
“I’ve told Mick about Perth, what a great place it is and the strength of support for football in this town.
“There will be plenty of opportunities for local football supporters to take part in activities throughout the week and we’re very much looking forward to welcoming Wolves to Western Australia.”
Perth Glory are said to be interested in signing Wolves club captain Jody Craddock and Birmingham and former Albion striker Kevin Phillips.
Perth owner Tony Sage is underwriting the deal to take Wolves down under and his deputy chairman Lui Giuliani was quoted in the Perth media today proclaiming the match as “watershed” moment in their club’s history.
Wolves fans – will you be following the lads Down Under? Are you pleased about the trip to Australia. Post your comments below.

As long as this is at the start of pre-season so we can come back and get 3-4 proper games under our belts ill be happy.
Maybe link this oz trip with a training camp, then come back to some good English team fixtures and be ready to take the league by storm……..whichever league that is ;)

I was in Perth in December 2006 for the Ashes and went to the WACA when Australia thumped England (seem to remember Adam Gilchrist thrashing our bowling all round the park). It’s a lovely modern city with nice parks and beaches down Fremantle way. Also went in a good pub down by The Swan river ‘The Lucky Shag’ bar. Well worth a visit and only 17 or 18 hours on the plane! Then went on to Melbourne and we bumped into a couple of lads from Melbourne Wolves supporters club (there are 30 odd of them). If I can get the dosh together I may consider another tour out there. Up the Wolves!

Why not play the current champions Melbourne Victory aswell while your down there. It’s a hell of a long way to go for 1 match!

Bring a kangaroo back. They can throw it further than that Stoke bloke.

At last we get to see the Wolves downunder. Moved over here a couple of years ago and looking forward to watching the perth match. If anyone is planning on spending a couple of weeks over here the south west of australia is a beutiful part of the world with lots to see and do.

And we lose Craddock who is good enough to stay get him signed don’t lose an asset we will need him in the relegation fight next season
Report abuse
They should only go to Australia if they don’t get promoted !!!

if playing in oz can help get some more shirt sales and a few more fans from down under it’s a great idea. I see that the Perth owner is underwriting the deal so it won’t cost the club anything so can’t really see how the credit crunch comes into it. If we’re gona be successfull and establish ourselves in the prem we’re gona have to do this kind of thing to get extra money into the club. Why not try and get a match in Japan as well?, English football’s massive out there and we really should be looking to tap into the far east market just like the big teams have. if we just stick to our local surroundings how are we supposed to grow?

#16.Good point. MM may spot a Roo or Two he would

For once, someone else is travelling the 10,000 miles for a Wolves match! Hope like hell that this happens, as I live 30 minutes from Members Equity Stadium and will be there for sure.
From what has been said in Perth, Wolves will be down for about 12 days for what sounds like a training camp with a match against Perth Glory and possibly the Western Australian state team. Given that it is the A-League pre-season, I suppose another match against A-League opposition is possible too.
I live in Melbourne but the chance to see the old gold and black before our return to the Premiership will have me on a plane to Perth for sure!
I’m in Brisbane, its a long way to Perth but I’d definately try to make the trip.
There are loads of Wolves fans in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, etc, Wolves would be very well supported in Australia.
All the way to Australia for one game though? Surely a couple of other games could be arranged.
I’m up for a trip from Brisbane.
This has created a lot of interest in Australia where Wolves have many fans.
Its a long way to come for one game though?

Only a 4 hour flight from Sydney for us. Hopefully they’ll see the light and come play on the East Coast too!!
Can’t believe my eyes that my beloved team are coming over to Perth!!
Always kept upto date on a daily basis since I moved over here 5 years ago, and now my dreams of seeing Wolves play over here are finally coming true!
Hopefully it’ll convert quite a few more locals to follow Wolves as well, and then we can build up a bigger Oz base!
Can you add a game against Queensland Roar into the schedule please? It’s a damn long way from Brisbane to Perth, but nevertheless, I will be there with other Qld Wolves

Excellent, a chance to see my team for teh frst time in five years! aA couple of beers in the Brisbane before the game is on the cards!

If they are coming to Perth they have to come to Melbourne to play teh Victory – reigning Champions and captained by the great Kevin Muscat. Would be fantastic.

FANTASTIC NEWS!!!
As a 19 year old who’s lived in Oz all my life, it’ll be good to finally go to my first Wolves game.

I hope they come to sydney (eastern coast) of Australia.
But Perth is only a 68 hour drive (4352kms away)

Hi Thaiwolf, how long you been in BKK? Fancy getting together for a few beers? Andy, you and your mates are welcome at mine! Up the wolves!
Please come to the East Coast too. There are heaps of Wolves fans in Melbourne/Sydney and Brisbane. It is a 5+ hour flight from East to West and not cheap either.
One game in Perth alone is a waste for the team. I don’t care who they would play on the east, preferably in Brisbane though ;) but please don’t alienate the fans on this side of Australia!!
i live in perth, its a brilliant place to come, you won’t wana go um. over the moon me babbies are comin, it’s not 40 years behind andy its just more laid back and friendly, abit like my old neighbourhood ashmore park. once upon a time there was a tavern.

Muscat is at Melbourne and Corica at Sydney so why not go the whole hog and play other A League teams. The standard is not great but has to be better than Norwegian Division 2.
As a Wolves fan for over 25 years and now an Oz resident, I look forward to the lads touring downunder. A-League teams are fairly rubbish, they feature such ‘stars’ as Steve Corica and Kevin Muscat. Blue Square at best. Large English population in Perth with a Wolves fan club too. Will no doubt outsing and outplay the locals. Hope Wolves come to my town Melbourne, last seasons premiers of the A-league.
We want our pint glasses twice the size!

Can they stop off in Bangkok on the way over (or back) and play a friendly against the Thai national team? At least I would see em then too. Liverpool are coming in July so why not the Wolves – we should be in the Prem by then anyway…I hope. Maybe even arrange a game against the scousers while they are here….Mr Morgan could do a deal. Quite a few Bangkok Wolves here too.
Get em to play a game against the Thai national team too, Liverpool are so why not the Wolves. Will break up the journey a bit for both the team and any fans coming. Quite a few Bangkok Wolves here too…I know at least 7 for starters and a Wolves-owned pub to drink in.

I’ll be making the short (3 hour) flight from Adelaide! Cant wait!

whats wrong with a friendly at fowlers park against wolverhampton united??
Am absolutely gutted. The pre-season friendlies have been one of the hightlighs of the season for me. Over the past few years have been to Norway, Ireland and Scotland and after our tie in with the team in Budeapest was looking forward to a trip to Hungary. whats worse is that I’m booked to go to Aussie in August, so no way can I get there a few weeks before. Anyway I thought we made a loss last season – is this just a jolly? Think its daft myself – moxey must be meeting some of his basketball mates?
I’ll be there, just got to fly from the east coast to the west. Why they don’t base the tour in NSW its a bit strange, they could play 3 teams all within 3 hours drive of each other. It’s a hell of a way to come for 1 game. The grounds are better on the east coast too. Once more details are released it would be good to catch up with the Barmy Army from Oz!
fantastic news.hope the wolves come and play in Brisbane as i cant find anyone to look after the dog

Yes, I will take a 4 hour flight from Sydney to watch the ‘Golden Boys’in Perth.
