Martis playing for Albion future

ALBION WESTHAM 16 DH 20Albion defender Shelton Martis has revealed he is playing for his future as he tries to help the Baggies escape relegation.

The Dutchman, who has been thrust into first-team action in the last two weeks, is waiting to hear whether manager Tony Mowbray will exercise an option to extend his Hawthorns contract.

Martis’s deal expires at the end of the season but Albion have an option to extend it for another year.

He said: “I have about two months left on my contract and after that I don’t know. I’m not thinking about it. I just want to do my best. If it comes it comes.

“I’m maybe being lazy by not thinking about these things, but I’m concentrating on staying up and that’s the main thing, so I’ve not had any talks with the manager about it yet.

“The club have an option on me so I’m not thinking about moving or staying, I just want to keep playing as I’m playing now. My focus is about doing the right thing for the club at the moment.”

Martis was elevated into senior action at West Ham in a surprise selection by Mowbray and his role in a clean sheet at Upton Park helped him retain his place for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Bolton.

The 26-year-old Dutch Antilles international has also revealed he was due to rejoin Championship Doncaster for a second loan spell.

At the very least he seems to work well with Olsson, who’s got to be the first choice centre-half at the moment. I’m guessing he’ll stay.

What a breath of fresh air from Martis stuck in the reserves, sent out on loan, shoved in against WestHam played well and kept his place, well done son and not an inkling of a moan or wanting to move.Give him an extension Mowbray, he deserves it.

He’s dione well in the last 2 games when called upon.
Next season I don’t think we’ll have Meite, Donk, Hoff or Cech, so I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get the extended deal.

    Best of luck son

Loved that 3 minute spell against Bolton, when TM had just opted to go for broke by hauling both full-backs off and Olson went off the pitch for treatment to head wound, leaving Martis as the only reconised defender on the pitch! And in only his 2nd game of the season! What was the formation again? 1-4-4!!!

We’re certain to be playing coke footie next season so i’d give him the extra year as he’ll be a useful squad member at the very least…maybe more.

Never thought much of Martis, never seen much either, but he has been perhaps our best defender along side Olsson, its good to see that we look more solid at the back, and with his physical presence against Stoke, it could only get better with him playing well, however Stoke is a tough one, Physical battle is lost before we go out there, but the footballing battle is somthing they wont live with if and IF we keep the ball on the deck. If were going down, then lets go down fighting

Maybe Martis is a fringe player becuase he aint one of TM’s golden boys. TM has had to pick him and he has certainly showed some spirit and maybe he can be the catalyst to help us stop up (got me prayer mat out).

Let’s bury this Stoke hoodoo once and for all. Does anyone remember when we walloped 6-0?

    Boing Boing!!
