Fury over Gabby’s U21 call
Wednesday 25th March 2009, 11:28AM GMT.
Villa boss Martin O’Neill’s relationship with the Football Association looked increasingly strained today after Gabby Agbonlahor was called up to England’s under-21s despite question marks over his fitness.
Agbonlahor was handed a late call to Stuart Pearce’s squad as cover for the injured Theo Walcott yesterday. However, it is understood, the Villa striker had been carrying a calf injury.
The 22-year-old, who was left out of Fabio Capello’s senior squad – despite starting England’s last two games – is believed to have undergone a scan before being given the green light to link up with the under-21s but the claret and blues did not discover the news until 10am yesterday.
O’Neill’s relations with England are already strained after Emile Heskey started against Spain last month despite carrying an Achilles problem – an injury the Villa striker has had to manage ever since.
And this latest breakdown in communications is likely to irk him, especially as both of the under-21s games are friendlies, first in Norway on Friday and then against France at the City Ground on Tuesday.
Agbonlahor has struggled for form of late, showing signs of fatigue, and was left on the bench in a Premier League game for the first time this season in Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool.

I agree that if your country calls you up then you play… HOWEVER… If the player in questions got an injury then they shouldnt..
Whats the point of picking an injured player to play. he wont be at his full patential for England and risks making the injury worse so he wont be able to play for the club either.. All parties lose out..
Ledley kings a prime example

Carlton Cole is a much better player and his scoring record shows it……..?

tinker,
Hes not a better player hes just having a good season.. Hes been Quiet over the years to say the least… Where as Gabbys just having a dip in form at the moment.
You give me Agbonlahor at his best and Carlton Cole at his best n I know who I would pick.

The point is, this is an U21 friendly… This could work either way for Gabby. Pearce had an interview yesterday and has already stated his intentions to look after James and Gabby.
There are plenty of players out there that should be looked at. Gabby could play some part of this, with no pressure and recapture the kind of form we want him to. All it needs is a goal, a decent shot or even just tobeat a man, it’s amazing how brittle confidence is.

its at an all time low for him. He had the same drought last season though if I remember n he came good then. It just needs the slightest thing to go his way at the mo. Even if its just a deflected goal. Itl give him a huge lift..
I just hope it doesnt make the injury worse, because thatl just make things worse… I just hope if he plays it all goes really well for him
