Harewood hailed after Wolves deal

Tuesday 24th March 2009, 11:12AM GMT.

harewoodWolves manager Mick McCarthy has hailed new signing Marlon Harewood as a Premier League addition to his promotion-chasing squad after clinching his signing.

Four years after enjoying promotion via the play-offs with West Ham, the 29-year-old striker has been hired on loan to see his new club over the finishing line in the quest for a top-flight return.

Harewood, frustrated by his permanent substitute role at Villa, will have his future reviewed at the end of the season, although his parent club have a 24-hour recall option after the first 28 days of the loan.

That comes into force after the visit of QPR on April 18, but Harewood is not thinking beyond the immediate tar-get of getting some first team football under his belt again – and helping Wolves clinch promotion.

He said: “I’m delighted to have the chance to come to Wolves. The club have had a great season so far and are in a great position heading into the final six games of the season.

“I’ll be doing everything I can to try and help them over the finishing line. It’s good to get the chance to get out there, play some football again and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Harewood will be in contention for a place in the “six-pointer” at second-placed Blues a week on Monday and it is the prospect of bringing in that extra competition which the Wolves boss could not resist.

McCarthy said: “We’re bringing in a Premier League striker. Goals haven’t been a problem for us this season – our strikers have done very well and I have told them they haven’t done anything wrong.

“But when there is a chance to bring in added competition with a proven goalscoring pedigree, then you have to take that opportunity.”

Chief Executive Jez Moxey added: “Marlon has got a very good track record scoring goals and can also operate wide on the right.

“So as well as adding to our striking options it also gives us cover in an area where we haven’t really got any natural right-sided player to cover for Michael Kightly.”

Not sure if Marlon would be the right choice if we achieve promotion, but he could just be the man to help us out over the last six matches

Brilliant signing, we have to be realistic if we do get over the finishing line. We ain’t going to sign premiership players currently in the first team if we go up. It will be players in their reserves, players like Harewood or Huddlestone for example. I’m sick of Wolves fans thinking the likes of Robbie Keane will come back. It ain’t going to happen i’m afraid!! What we mustn’t do is sign unproven foreigners like what the albion did. Its too much of a gamble. Premiership experience is the key and Harewood has that.

    Pace, power & goals.

Remember him having a decent season for West Ham the year they went back up to the prem, hpefully he can do the same for us.

We now have cover across all four forward positions.

May I suggest that young Mr Ward be given a rest, as he has looked off the pace at left wing over the last few games.

More square pegs in round holes. If we want cover for Kightly/Jarvis, why not sign a winger Jez?? We should have had a cash bid in for Carlos Edwards and Mancienne.

No we go for a cheap option in the useless Reid, who makes Rohan Ricketts look like a heavyweight!!

Stop signing these muppets and loan out Collins – oh hang on a minute why is no-one interested in him? Could it be perhaps because he is rubbish!! Good job Jez signed him up for 4 years, wouldn’t want to risk losing any value!!

Anyway, good to see the lad in, I would use him in the blues game the same as what Villa have and as an impact player.

Imagine starting with Iwelumo and Seb and knowing you have Vokes and Harewood to replace them for the last 20-30 mins……..great striking options for the championship me thinks!!

Im agreed that this should only be to the end of the season, and then look at who we can get in next year IF we secure promotion. If the scenario is that(fingers crossed) we secure promotion earlier than last game. I would partner Harewood with Vokes , with SEB and try things out ….. well done again to MM

    5) Gotta agree with 9 – you need to get a life. Moan when we’re winning etc etc.
    11) Why do idiots on here never miss a chance to bash Moxey ? Moxey is excellent at his job and as for knowing nothing about the club, I think he’s rather more qualified than you to comment about the goings-on at Molineux. People blamed him for the lack of investment in Dave Jones’ premiership campaign – unbelieveable! ‘Twas Sir Jack’s decision not to invest more, not Moxey’s – he’s not a multi-millionaire, so his job is to control the budget set before him, and I for one think he does a damn good job at it.

    12. Spot on. How can adding Harewood have any negative effect on our chances of promotion? He is a tall, quick and powerful striker with an awesome track record in the second tier. If he makes any contribution that leads to a win or a valuable draw than he’s more than paid off the gamble.

I think Bluenoses will be very weary of a Villa striker coming to St Andrews ready to spoil the party. O’Neil has done us Wolves a favour and I’m sure Villa fans are hoping Harewood dents Blues promotion chances.

Just remember back when we signed Kevin Kyle on loan, we all thought what the hell is Mick doing. But in the end Kyle did make an impact and that assist for Henrys goal at Charlton kept us in the hunt. If Harewood makes any impact like that it will still be better than nothing. I’m backing him to score at St Andrews!

24, Well said on Moxey, I completely agree.
It’s like Berra all over again.. Moan and whinge and knock a feller before he’s even put on a shirt, I seem to remember one or two grunts and groans when we signed Iwelumo too. Yet there were no ‘Oh I was wrong’ comments after big Chris was banging them in, or when Berra made our defense the best it’s been in over 4 months. It’s tragic to say that some people seem to want us to fail, just so they can say ‘I told you so’.

I think this is a fantastic signing, he did great for West Ham and played a major part in their promotion, similar to what SEB has done and is doing for us.. So give the bloke a chance. People whinge when Keogh gets called on, or starts up, because he ‘isn’t good enough’ well Harewood is good enough and has proven to be so. So give it a rest, concentrate on one match at a time, and enjoy it, stop knocking the lads that are actually getting us to the premiership by debating on whether they will be good enough IN the premiership.

I’m not sure on this one.

We have 4 forwards to play the final 6 games and we are top scorers in the league. I hope this doesn’t upset the camp and have a negative effect.

We can play hoofball with BCI up front and we can play through teams with Keogh up front. I don’t really see what MH will add. He is not a prolific scorer, so he isn’t cover for SEB. I am guessing he is just general cover for injuries or suspensions for the final 6 (or 8 or 9) games.

If we go up, I hope we are being a little more ambitious than MH and SEB up front.

I hope the loan move comes off, good luck MH.

32 – I was very unsure about the Berra signing. I saw him play a few times for Hearts and he did not look very good at all. You can only judge a player on what you see.

Berra is turning out to be a good signing. But MM’s record on signing central defenders is not good. Collins, D.Ward, Shacks were not great buys, and we finally stopped shipping goals when we put a Dave Jones signing back in there. So Berra was obviously a risky signing when you looks at MM’s history.

As for Vokes being disappointed I hope he is a realistic young lad and realises that this season he has come on leaps and bounds. Excellent comments from Razor (24). Moxey is an employee of the club and his job is to manage the money he is given. Sir Jack was the culprit in 2003 because Dave Jones told him a few home truths, he didn’t like it and refused to give any adequate funding for team building. That’s not Moxey’s fault. Sir Jack is also a tax exile who doesn’t contribute anything to the running of the country (ie schools, hospitals, police etc) and although you have to give credit for his backing over the years, he is not the saint he is held out to be by many Wolves fans. Lets hit a few home truths (and hopefully the bloke who sits behind me in the Southbank complaining is reading this and takes note!)

Mark Davies: Injured for 2 years, sent on loan to get some games to return. Had his head turned by Bolton and handed in a transfer request. No ones fault, he chose to do that himself.

Little and Gobern: Both injured for the majority of the season and making comebacks now!

Mancienne: Wolves stated publicly they wanted him back, Chelsea refused! what more could MM or Jez do??

Carlos Edwards: Called back from his loan and has been playing, Sunderland don’t want to let him go so we don’t stand a chance there either!

And stop slating reid and collins, yeah they aint great but they aint out first or second choice players so it doesnt matter! And before anyone says anything i have a home and away season ticket and only missed 1 game this season.

Keogh will play as a winger from now on.

That leaves us with 4 good strikers. SEB and Harewood should start at Brum. Vokes is good but he isn’t experienced enough but will be great for the future, Iwelumo works hard but Harewood is a better all round striker than these two, I think we’d rip Blues apart if we played him.

Lets get one thing straight.By far the main reason we are in our current position is down to the magnificant generosity of SIR JACK.No one else in the history of the game has walked away from a football club not taking a penny, forget the framed tenner, and insisting £30 m is spent on the club by the new owner. Before that he signed off the existing debts of many millions. And he left us with a fine stadium and training ground. The failure on the pitch was down to the people Sir Jack employed incuding Moxey.

I read with great interest most of the comments made on this page – and if I did not know what the
postion of the Club was I would have thought we were bottom of the Conference. Some of the comments are so stupid it beggers belief. I would say one thing if any of the “knockers” on this forum were to think at the beginning of the season were we are today – they would have shut up ages ago.Yes the team has shortcomings all teams have – But Belt up now and support the team and the players until the last whistle. Then next season you can all start moaning again.

Number 64, for the love of god will you please let the game against the Albion in the cup 2 Years ago go!?

Face up to the current situation. We are top of the league, 5 points clear of Blues, 9 clear of Reading (although they have a game in hand) and we are winning games! I was at Forest on Saturday, the game was dreadfull, but we won.

Stop bringing up garbage from the past and look at what MM and Moxey have been building for the last 2 and a bit years…

    A VERY bright future!

WELCOME to Molineux, Marlon. This 17 stone brick sheet house will put the fear of God into oppo defences, if he gets his chance.

Yes-Dublin Wolf stay about mate we need to overide some of the negatives being generated by some.

I hope that we get right on the signing trail and get players in as quckly has we can.

Last time we went up the season started bad some really overwhelming defeats-Blackburn, Chelsea and even Charlton gave us a wide awakening.
I look forward to the challenge and I hope MM and the Board will be up to it. We in my opinion had a good end to that season only silly errors saw us go down and there were really impressive times. Defeating Man U at home and a narrow draw with Liverpool.3-0 down with Leicester only to win 4-3 great display.

Some even walked out when we were three down-Still rub it in now and again when I get the chance,

Whatever happens we will still be there but I really do hope that this time we get the chance to redeame our performances of seasons past.. Here edeth the Lesson…. Shamrock for Ever–Crazey Dave.
