Ugly wins the way for Kightly

Monday 23rd March 2009, 11:51AM GMT.

FOREST V WOLVES 20 GD 21Wolves winger Michael Kightly insists the team can claim the Championship title after learning how to “win ugly.”

The league leaders fourth win in five made it 13 points out of 15 and three successive 1-0 away wins, which have taken Mick McCarthy’s league leaders five points clear of Birmingham, their next opponents in two weeks’ time.

Kightly, whose 76th minute winner proved the difference on Saturday, knows the league is theirs to be lost.

He said: “Of course we can win it – we’ve believed we could win it and we’ve been there all season. We’re still a long way away though and there are still a lot of points to be played for.

“But if we can show the same grit and determination that we’ve shown over the last five games in the next six, that should tide us over.

“We’ve learned how to win ugly. The last few games haven’t been great to watch but we’ve come out winners.

“I think the Sheffield Wednesday match was one of the worst games I’ve played in in my career!

“We’ve won games 1-0 recently but we’d take another six of those all day long.”

Kightly believes Saturday’s gritty performance at the City Ground was a major step towards promotion.

He said: “It was a massive win and we’ve got the international break now, so we can have a rest and then come back against Birmingham and hopefully win that one.”

With six games left and a nine-point cushion to the play-offs, Kightly admits the players are daring to think about promotion.

He said: “It’s massive for all of us to get up. There aren’t many players in our dressing room who have played in the Premier League, so if we get there it will be a massive achievement.

“We’re five points clear – why panic? We’ve done so well all season so we’ll enjoy the situation and hopefully we can get up.”

Well done lads for Saturday, great result! its so refreshing to see us keeping clean sheets and nicking goals to win games.

If we beat the blues I don’t think we are going to be stopped, the important thing is that confidence is flying high and we out of the top 3 have the momentum to keep winning games.

    C’mon you Wolves!

Well done Kites but ugly wins do nothing for our nerves.

By the way we should note that prior to shakell going back to Norwich in five games they conceded 9 goals. in the five he’s played they conceded 3 and beat Cardiff and drew with Brum. They have READING AT HOME TO PLAY. mICK SENDING sHAKES ON LOAN WAS MORE OF A MASTER STROKE THAN WE UNDERSTOOD AT THE TIME…

And he is due to return while I guess that if Norwich want him back they’ll have to pay double cos he is clearly a better player now. MM’s magic continues.

Finally Norwich have scored 47 goals this season which means the 8 they scored against us amounts to 17% OF THEIR TOTAL.

To be honest I don’t care about winning the title, although it would be nice! We just want to get promoted automatically, then watch the other four teams sweat it out in the play-offs.

A draw at the Blouses would be fine, and then win our last 3 home matches.

P.S. Watch out for Sheff Utd getting automatic, not that i’m bothered about them!

    Up the Wolves!

Wolves winning the title would be a bonus, but surely every Wolves fan just wants promotion. I just want promotion first and hopefully its just one more win to be crowned Champions.

Well done Kites and the rest of the club for getting over the slump and grinding out some really huge victories. Its ours for the taking now. Realistically we only need to win 3 more games to win promotion. But why not win our next 4 make sure.

PS I reckon Kites goal against Forest will give him the confidence to score another important goal in the run-in. Wolves are very lucky to have a player of his quality. I mean 19 assists and 8 goals is simply awesome.

Win Ugly? That was a car crash performance!! It clearly highlighted that if we do get promotion then we need a minimum of 7 new first team players. You can get nothing for a million either Mr Moxey/Mr McCatthy so we will need to spend in excess of £20million to have any chance of surviving without ending up in a horrible scrap of desperate football all season.

Albion opitimise what NOT to do. Don’t buy over-seas players based on their CV (Valero) and get players who have already played in the prem with Hull and Stoke looking like they could survive there is a chance they will get ’2nd season syndrome’ and we have a great chance to stay up. go and get

Sol Campbell (pompey) out of contract
    Tom Huddlestone (spurs)
    Aaron Ramsay (arsenal) season loan
    Justin Hoyte (borough)
    David Wheater (borough)

What is worrying is that if Stearman is behind Craddock in the pecking order, will he be able to play in the Premiership if we go up?

Collins is utterly useless and hope he never plays for us again – too many mistakes and too clumsy.
