Albion blog: Megson v Mowbray
Friday 20th March 2009, 9:47AM GMT.
Who would you rather have in the home dugout as Bolton come to town, Gary Megson or Tony Mowbray? Albion blogger Jarrod Hill mulls it over.
The Bolton game sees the return of a previous manager, who many fans still hold in fine regard. Gary Megson achieved a great deal for our club and for that reason I for one will applaud him.
But, if given the choice, which one would you prefer to be in the home dugout?
When Megson took over he inherited a team staring at relegation to what is now League One, and the club and fans limit of ambition was to compete and survive in the Championship.
We avoided relegation and the improvement was almost immediate, within three seasons we were playing top flight football.
The style of football was effective rather than aesthetically beautiful, he used our meagre resources to achieve outstanding results and much of what we currently enjoy – I use that phrase loosely – can be traced back to his building blocks put in place in a comparatively short period of time.
Megson’s passion was what I enjoyed the most, although it ultimately contributed to his falling out with our chairman, but I liked the fact he always looked as passionate about the teams performance as I was sitting in the stands.
The game against Crystal Palace and the three points which confirmed us as a Premier League team still ranks as my favourite ever day being a Baggies fan.
If Hollywood made a film of that season people would call it twee and unrealistic. To pip our local rivals in the fashion we did and for the ageing peoples champion in Bob Taylor to score the goal that sealed it was just fairytale.
It was sad to see him go at the beginning of our second Premier League season and although his successor Bryan Robson took the acclaim for keeping us up on the last day of the season, he achieved it with a squad predominantly built by Gary Megson.
We all know what current boss Tony Mowbray has brought to our club, he has restored our reputation as an entertaining football team and the games in the majority are good to watch. Last season was quite simply a feast of football, swashbuckling style and a trophy at the end of the season, nearly two!
So we will not only witness a clash of style but a clash of football mentality. Both managers have had success with the Albion and if I had to choose between them, I would be tempted to employ Mowbray long term and Megson on a short term basis.
If you could combine the two we would be laughing, Megson’s defensive discipline and Mowbray’s free flowing attacking football would be a great balance.
Anyway onto the game, a win would see our collective hopes raise another notch, but a loss would see them plummet into despair.
Mowbray has to decide on a game plan that will not only nullify Bolton’s strengths, but also ensure our own strengths win through. Defending set pieces will be key, so I expect Martis and Olsson will remain as our centre half pairing.
The rest of the team selection will largely depend on what formation we go with, but with us desperately requiring a win I expect to see us play 4-4-2.
But, whatever happens, we will see the ground host two good Albion managers, when for years we struggled to find just one!
My message goes something like this -”Hi Gary, nice to see you again and thanks for the memories, please can we have three points today?”

Great Blog Jarrod.
I will be applauding Mr Megson too as i think he done a great job whilst at the Albion.
Anyway on to the important bit…. Are we all going to be meeting for a few beers before the game tomorrow?
If so what time and where?

Megson did an absolutely fantastic job and no-one will EVER forget what he achieved at the Albion.
As you rightly said Bomber, the guy’s work allowed the Albion to be where they are today, as opposed to struggling in the Championship.
TM has bought a new brand of football back to the Hawthorns and he too should be applauded for this. I have 100% faith in TM’s ability to get both results and style in the Premier League with WBA. If not this season, then in 2 seasons time.
I’m hoping for a win, not expectant, but hopeful.
Also, Bomber, I’ll designate you as beer arrangement organiser. Let us know where and when tomorrow and then a decision is made!!
That okay bud?

Unbelievable.
although extremely greatful for what megson did for albion, saved us from relegation, two promotions and made us a rich, rich club, i would still rather gauge my eyes with rusty spoons than go back to watching albion play under him

No 5 – but watch us under mowbray, rollover and have our tummy tickled. No passion, no desire.

Megson is a ‘wears heart on sleeve’ man. His passion is very very evident, whenever he manages from the sideline.
How we need that type of spirit, impassioned bawling from the sideline right now.
This team is petering out damply from the premiership–confidence to take the ball and move forward is all too evidently lacking.
I have not had a chance to see our plight in the premiership, due to health problems—but have followed ardently via radio.
If only we could have a bit of megsons passion on the sidelines, spitting fire, bawling better play from his players—we might become reborn.
But there again, ‘if’ is a very big word I guess.

Hi Bomber – I understand your comment about Megson short term and Mowbray long term.
You suggest that GM would get quick results whilst TM would improve us over time…. and that stands up if you look at GM’s record in the CCC….
He saved us in his first season, playoffs 2nd season and promoted third season – a remarkable achievement that I and every baggies fan will never forget.
But lets not forget that TM is battling in the premier league, and that we were poor on all fronts in the prem under GM. Even though results and performances have not been great this season at least we know WHAT TM is trying to achieve.
With GM we were poor in the prem with no idea what his plan was…. with TM we know what he is trying to build and for that reason I would go with Mowbray.
Lets not forget that TM took over a team low on confidence, with a split dressing room and having just been relegated after playing negative football – and almost immediately got those same players playing great football with passion and got results…. and we lost in the playoff final at wembley.
People accuse me of forgetting what Meggo did for us – which is untrue – but i also remember what TM has done for us too.

Both managers have created history for our proud club. I we could have Megson for his desire and Mowbray for our stylish play and dipping into the coffers a bit more Mr Peace, then we would not be the accomodating football club boing boinging between the Premiership and the CCC.

Both Megson and Mowbray are single minded and have no plan “B” and are both Championship quality only.
They both did a good job but are beyond their sell by date at this level.
Albion supporters deserve better than this we have been sold down the river again by Pease who has no Premiership ambition and is looking to offload the club.
Championship here we come!!!!!!!
