Walsall blog: The Bitter End
Tuesday 17th March 2009, 9:24AM GMT.
Walsall blogger Mark Jones believes the Saddlers’ drubbing at the weekend has highlighted some pertinent points ahead of the visit of Brighton.
I stayed to the bitter end and I always make a point of staying to the end. Call me a masochist, but I’m a Walsall fan and it’s my way of showing my support.
One woeful performance – and believe me the word woeful barely does it justice – won’t change that.
But I can also fully understand that a lot of people couldn’t bear to watch, particularly after the fourth and then the fifth Bristol Rovers goal, because things were that bad.
If the story that one longstanding fan was booted out for displaying his frustration and anger in front of the directors’ seats is true, then those responsible should hang their heads in shame. The guy needs an extra special apology – and quick.
Talking of apologies, staying to the end also gave the team the chance to come and clap me. Troy Deeney did to be fair to him, Paul Boertien sort of did half-heartedly – which pretty much summed up the day – and what Robin Shroot’s problem was is anybody’s guess.
The rest trudged off for the fully warranted dressing room lock-in. I hope their ears were bleeding. I hope manager Chris Hutchings and assistant Martin O’Connor went ballistic. I also hope any breakages will be paid for by the players themselves.
If they have had a team meeting, then I also hope they had a good heart to heart.
To be fair, Bristol Rovers were very good on the day. They passed the ball well – and to each other – their movement off the ball was intelligent, they were well-drilled and of course they took five of their numerous chances.
The large away following probably went home scratching their heads as to how they’d started the day below us in the league.
I’ve always considered Rovers to be a good lower division club like ourselves, they were the opponents on my first ever visit to Fellows Park in 1973, so for me there are worse clubs we could have lost to. Good luck to them for the rest of the season.
Like most fans I thought we’d turned the corner recently, it now looks like we’ve turned a different corner, all of a sudden its four games without a victory and teams below us are winning.
Looking for any silver lining, Saturday should finally put an end to the misguided play-off talk and it’ll also send a message to the boardroom, that appointing a decent management team doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve papered over all the cracks.
The five straight wins at the end of 2004/05 gave then-manager Paul Merson plenty of breathing space – much to our cost – and almost all of the Colin Lee era seemed to be one giant ‘everything’s OK’ illusion.
The squad will need strengthening and Hutchings deserves decent backing in the summertime. If a 5-0 drubbing at home enables that to happen then maybe – and only just maybe – it won’t have been such a bad thing.
I hope Chris has time to relax and think about how to pick things up for the Brighton game. In theory there should be seven or eight changes for Tuesday, in reality the size of our squad means there’ll be considerably less.
A change in attitude would be a start.

I have myself since xmas had problems with the Walsall’s ‘customer service’, it took 3 emails, 2 complaints to a very rude steward and a complaint via a senior steward (must say he was the best by an absolute mile) to get some sort of answer to a simple question.
Got moved for the leeds game (which was bad enough) only to find people sitting in my seat, steward told me to move to another seat instead of checking tickets.
Promised a fans forum before the end of last season, still not had it.
Know anyone who has never had a problem with the ticket office or the town centre shop? I don’t
And I haven’t even started on the football side!
You are spot on Mark – Attitudes must change towards fans and players, I for one am not renewing my season ticket and I would imagine I’m not the only one, I don’t really mind if Walsall are rubbish or the best team in the world, I have been going since 90, just fed up of the people in charge.

I was at the game on Saturday and it will be my last for a very long time. All 11 players were shocking. Esp, Manny Smith, Weston, Nicholls, Denney, and Jabo, Bradley, Hughes… the list goes on!!!!. No ambition, no quality, just a team of miss fits, who looked clueless at best. Watched the goals last night and it was like watching a pub team.
Second point. I was sitting in the next block to the directors,. The fan celebrated Walsall’s first shot on goal after 73 minutes. He then pointed this out to our great chairman that it was the only shot we had. When we had another (which was blocked by the wall and didn’t reach the keeper) he pointed out that we had two attempts at goal.
It was Mr Roy Whalley who was behind Jeff, screaming at the stewards to get him out, not sure if the chairman had told him to, but this was a guy who had stumped up over £300 for a season ticket (he was waving it as he was been lead out by the jobs worth’s) and gets treated like that after having to watch a display like that.
He should be given a free ticket as well as an explanation as to why he was kicked out. If anyone should be kicked out, lets start with the board, and then most of the team.
Why doesn’t the E&S ask those questions? Mr Chairman wasn’t out of the paper not so long ago, where is his daily / weekly column now.

Another excellent blog Mark. Can I just correct you on one point? The fan you mention was not thrown out for displaying frustration and anger. After we made our second attempt at goal in the match after about 65 minutes, there was around the ground a lot of ironic cheering. A fan in Text Stand stood up and raised both arms to make the V for Victory sign in the way that reminded me of Richard Nixon.
He was smiling broadly and his ironic gesture was widely appreciated by the fans around him. He cheered us up on a very gloomy day. He was absolutely not angry, offensive, threatening or abusive in any way at all. It was a disgrace that a very long-standing season ticket holder should be forcibly ejected for a light-hearted joke.

Kevin W, I was pointing out the mistake in the text, which has since been corrected. The first paragraph, presumably written by the E&S read at 9:20 this morning:
“Walsall blogger Mark Jones believes the Saddlers’ drubbing at the weekend has highlighted some pertinent points ahead of the visit of Bristol Rovers.”

I’m not saying anything today, I upset too many fans yesterday wanting most of the team to be released

i sit just 4 rows behind the fan who was ejected. it was after our first shot on goal that he got to his feet turned around looking towards the directors and held one finger of each hand and shouted ‘ one shot on goal ‘ after our second effort on goal he again got up turned around and this time with two finger on each hand and with his palms facing outwards shouted ‘ thats two shots on goal’ his actions were a little stupid, and unadvisable, how ever he did not insult anyone, did not use a ‘two fingered salute’ in the true sense of the meaning… he was not the only one, a large amount of ironic cheers were going up both times that he reacted. it would only have taken a steward to have a quiet word and the situation would have been resolved…. but the reaction by the stewards (whoever instructed them) was heavy handed and did not require the fan to be ejected. his mate who sat next to him then got up twice afterwards and held 3 and 4 fingers respectively and yet no action was taken against him….. we need every supporter we can get and this has lost us 2 more fans….very sad.
