Sylvan dreaming of Premier bow

Tuesday 17th March 2009, 11:49AM GMT.

49889-wms-wolves-ipsWolves hotshot Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is already daring to consider the prospect of playing in the Premier League.

With a scoring record as prolific as his – 35 goals in 57 League games for the club – belief in your own ability and those around you comes easily and he often describes the Wolves team as “fearless.”

His cool head is also an articulate one, the words flow as quickly and as freely as the goals for the Cambridge-born striker.

So when asked about the prospect of playing in the Premier League, the 22-year-old is determined to not only get there with Wolves, but see them make the best possible fist of it.

Ebanks-Blake’s 24 goals have propelled Mick McCarthy’s Championship leaders 10 points clear of the play-off zone with seven games left and the striker wants the dream to continue.

But Wolves fans shouldn’t feel this is the infamous collapse of 2001-02 repeating itself, Ebanks-Blake is merely exposing his determination and ambition to reach the top flight.

He said: “I’d like to be there (Premier League) but I certainly don’t say I will be there, because it’s not a foregone conclusion.

“We’re still focused on what we’ve got to do to get there and concentrate on the remaining games.

“Signings can be important. Hull made some very good signings, so did Stoke and West Brom.

“They’re as good a footballing side as anyone – they were probably the best in the league last season.

“It is difficult because (Premier League) teams have head starts on you, but you have to go there with a confidence that you deserve to be there, and try to hold your ground and that’s what happens with the teams that do reasonably well.

“I think if you asked any player they would want to improve yourself and play at the highest level. That’s where you really test yourself and I’m no different.

“If we continue doing what we’re doing then the signs are good. Make no mistake I want to get to the Premier League and I want to do it with Wolves.

“That’s been the ambition of mine since I joined and spoke to the manager about the club’s ambitions.”

Ebanks-Blake believes Wolves have overcome their worst spell, after one win in 11 and doesn’t see nerves playing a part in the run-in, chiefly because of a staff boasting a World Cup quarter-finalist in McCarthy and plenty of top-flight experience with the manager, assistant Terry Connor and fitness coach Tony Daley.

The striker said: “I don’t think so. It’s a fearless bunch of lads here that really want to achieve and do well.

“We’re lucky enough to have a manager and staff who have been in and around the Premier League and higher levels of football, they keep calm heads around the place and don’t let us getting carried away.

“There are no nerves or pressure – we are fearless and just want to win games.”

Wolves have led the Championship table since October and for all but two weeks since August 30 and Ebanks-Blake insists the players are happy to play with the pressure of being top.

He said: “We’re happy to be leading from the front and happy to take the pressure that comes with it. We’re just trying to win our games from now until the end of the season.

“We’ve shown promotion-winning form in the last four games and if we can maintain that between now and the end of the season, we’ll be promoted.

“That’s what we’re focused on doing and we’ve got to stay focused over this final straight.”

Wolves have struggled to break down stubborn opponents in their last two home games, as Ipswich then Charlton strung 10 men behind the ball at times to force scrappy encounters.

Ebanks-Blake believes Wolves have what it takes though to come through such uncompromising tests.

He said: “The football isn’t going to be pretty at this time of year, but we’ve got enough to mix it and grind out results and we’ve done that in the last three or four games.

“There are no easy games, it’s the same for everyone trying to get promoted, and we’ve got to approach every game with the right mentality.”
