Wolves blog: Getting Berra and Berra
Friday 13th March 2009, 9:15AM GMT.
Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd gives top marks to Christophe Berra, welcomes the Maltese supporters club and winces at a move for Marlon Harewood as Charlton come to town.
Christophe Berra, a footballer who’s surname must seem like a gift from the Gods for Sports editors across the country. If I hear one more fan say about him, “He’s getting Berra and Berra.”
It isn’t that I’ve had a sudden humour bypass, it’s more to do with the end of the season being so tense and I think many of us can sometimes forget why we support our beloved Wolves in the first place.
Manager Mick McCarthy has assembled a young, high-energy exhilarating team that has surely surpassed many of our expectations and who have got us within touching distance of a second stab at top-flight football.
Yes, fans are bound to get nervy and anxious as we get closer and closer to the end of the season. But there are many fans who I can only think have descended from planet JIWAL, who are saying that if Mick gets us promotion then he should be giving a golden handshake and be freed of his managerial duties.
Utter lunacy! We all have our flaws and I’m sure, even through Mick’s sometime belligerent and stubborn demeanor, he would be the first to admit that he doesn’t always get it right.
On Tuesday night, there were probably 20,000 of us who thought that we would have made better managerial decisions during the game against Ipswich.
I am, like many of us, a fantastic Championship manager in waiting. Against Ipswich, I would have left Kyel Reid on for the second half when introducing Michael Kightly to give us better pace and width on both flanks.
I would also have taken off Stephen Ward for Keogh rather than Matt Hill, and done so a little earlier than the final 10 minutes.
I probably see the game a little differently to Mick. He came out after the game and said that he was happy to hold on to a point towards the end of the game, rather than go gung-ho for all three points.
So perhaps one of Mick’s major flaws is that he does have this selective bunch of players who he plays when evidence suggests he shouldn’t. Although I think Stephen Ward has had a fantastic season at left-back, he didn’t really offer much of an attacking threat against Ipswich.
Unfortunately Mick’s blind faith in the likes of Andy Keogh and Neill Collins, who are both incredibly hard working players but perhaps have limited ability, has occasionally turned them both into scapegoats and left fans questioning Mick’s strategic decision making.
For large parts of last season, we suffered badly without the presence of Matt Jarvis and Michael Kightly. On Tuesday night it was a similar story, as most of our play in the first half was very narrow through the midfield, leaving strikers Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Chris Iwelumo starved of service.
The introduction of Kightly in the second half was an improvement, but he didn’t really hug the touchline and get many crosses into the box.
The two outstanding performances on Tuesday night came from player of the season elect, Ebanks-Blake, who fed on scraps all night from David Jones and David Edwards but who still almost won us the game single-handed.
For me though, top banana on the night was Christophe Berra who carried on from his outstanding show against Sheffield Wednesday.
He may not be the quickest of defenders, but he reads the game fantastically and you wouldn’t have wanted to be on the end of one of those crunching tackles!
He found his feet against Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich but before then I could hear a lot of fans saying that he was no better than Collins and what a waste of money.
Give the guy a chance! This is just a typical example of the impatient attitude of some of the more stupid Wolves fans who demand instant success.
So whether you see the Ipswich game as a point gained or two points lost, we are still in pole position to finish top of the pile, especially with Reading and Blues seemingly unable to do anything else but match our results.
Seven points out of nine for us, so you would hope that the top versus bottom clash this weekend gives us three more valuable points.
With the defensive conundrum now seemingly solved, hopefully we can attack Charlton from the start and gain our first home win in a month.
The Addicks now seem absolute certainties for relegation, so this will either mean that they relax and play like they have nothing to lose or perhaps coast the game, hopefully not concerned whether they win or lose!
I’m meeting up with Alfred Camilleri before the game. Alfred is the President of the Maltese Wolves Supporters Club and he and around a dozen other Wolves fans have flown over from Malta for the Ipswich and Charlton games.
Alfred, if you are reading, I’ll be at the hotel for 12pm. Let’s hope Alfred can return to Malta having seen a much more entertaining game than midweek.
Finally, I have just read that we have been linked with Marlon Harewood. Surely this is some kind of Friday 13th joke?
Have a bostin’ weekend.

good blog, 3 points this weekend is an absolute must!
Not getting carried away with promotion just yet, still haunted by the last time we blew it! But I am quietly confident!
Also very pleased i stuck a tenner on Ebanks Blake to be top scorer at the start of the season 15 – 1 get in!

Hi Nath
Good blog, glad to see you, like the team are back on track!!!
I saw the game like you on Tuesday & would of had Ward off at half time, thought he was poor.
I also think it was a point gained, they turned up with 5 in the middle & we found it tough, after the previous 2 tough games we had already had in the week.
I think Charlton will try & do the same tomorrow, but if Jarvis & Kites are fit & we keep defending properly we will have too much for them & I can only see a comfortable win.
Onwards & Upwards
Keep the faith

Nathan you seem to have the same blinkers as Mick..By reading your blogs its obvious you know and love your football, but I must dissagree with your points on Keogh,to say he is incredibly hard working is a mistake,he does nothing,he fools you and a lot of others, hes like the idle guy in the factory, allways looks busy when the boss is watching,,be honest what a change since he was dropped and Big Chriss brought back.

Nathan,
Whilst I agree with much of your blog, I cannot agree with your comments on Reid. He does have pace but is far to easily muscled off the ball and on Tuesday cost us much in the first half with his total inability to put the ball in the box with the many opportunities he had to cross un-molested. I got the impression he was trying to hard to please, resulting in him trying to be too clever and thus missing the more realistic if simple pass.
With respect to Ward he as done well at LB during the time the team was doing well, going forward scoring lots of goals. He has not been so good in tight matches when matched against a natural winger. In these matches gets forward at the wrong time and he really cannot tackle correctly.
Best wishes for Saturday keep the faith.

When you say “the more stupid Wolves fans” does that mean we are all stupid, some more than others? Hate to admit it but I think you are right! Fifty years a Wolves fan, stupid but would not be anything else!

Thanks Nathan, good stuff.
I didn’t blame Lescott for leaving and nor will I Kightly and SEB etc if we don’t make it this year, but I really hope we do so I can be there for the Bolton game – there are two people there that have let us down big time and we should let them know. I have NEVER booed anyone at a match before, but the day is coming!!

Marlon Harewood LOL.
Possibly the biggest donkey out there.
Must win game on Sat. If we can’t beat the worst team in the league at home, then we don’t deserve to go up.

berra looks the money, gives us a great platform with which to attack on saturday, good blog nathan.
i’d go with hill at left back and the fast boys on the wings. wardy has had a good season has probably been the best to adapt to being played in the wrong position so fair play to him.
gotta be a win on saturday, but lets give the team a chance to settle – once that nervous murmour starts, the away side just feeds off it.

ah dear old greg,
glad to see you actually understand the game of football, seen as you have no useful comments.
maybe if you had a brain you could over-emphasise it in one line?
I would never have marlon in the team, maybe loan for the rest of the season, but he never really established himself as a top scorer in the prem so whats the point in signing him if we are to try and stay up next season?
drop (put a shift in) keough

3. Bob Wolf
You are either a baggies fan with nothing better to do as your team have forgotten how to play football, or if you are a wolves fan (which I doubt it) you are an absolute moron – either way take yourself off and post some comments of on another site.
Right, now to the matter in hand – Wolves have 8 games left and are 3 points clear at the top of the championship. Whatever your view on tactics / players / Mick McCarthy / Jez Moxey / Transfers this season, I think as Wolves Fans we wouldn’t swap the current position we are in for anything. O.K. we have had a bad run, but so have Brum and Reading, a Championship Title has never been there for the taking like it has this season. Whatever your views on Wolves in the Premiership / whether we would stay up / whether Mick could manage us etc etc etc lets just concentrate on this season first !!! This is said a lot of times, but now really is the time to unite and ‘sing your hearts out for the lads’. It saddens me to see Wolves fans slating each other on here, booing the team because certain fans are impatient, or constantly on certain players backs. We have 8 games to win this league, and then we’ll take it from there. Lets have Molineux a cauldren of Wolves fans singing on Saturday for Charlton, because getting behind the team is what is going to get us promoted this year. Try giving even Keogh a cheer or two and see how he responds to it. Having talked to a couple of the wolves boys, they have said how having a crowd behind them gives them so much more confidence on the pitch.
We are Wolves !

I agree Ward was not the best and never is on the wing, but to be fare his contribution as left back must be recognised as positive. I along with many around me in the South Bank agree his best position is there and he has stood out as a vastly improved player this term.
Not good enough if we get promotion but then neither are the vast majority of the squad.
Up the Wolves 3 points needed tomorrow and no Banana skins please. MM leave Henry on the bench please not good enough.

Why can’t you see that this year we have 4 different style of strikers? Ebanks is a born-goalscorer,Iwelumo is a donkey dying hard for the ball,Keogh is a tricky dribling lightweight striker and Vokes is tall like Chriss but with better skills and technique in his game. I can’t blame anyone…cause anyone has something different to his game…better than the other one. Trust Mick’s plans and get behind our team. We are champions…but we don’t know it…yet!!! Personally, I thought it was 2 pts lost against Ipswich considering the overwhelming possession we enjoyed. We didn’t create many clear-cut chances, though, so I guess we got what we deserved. Mind you, Ipswich have one of the best away records in the division and you could see why. Still, we’ve taken 4 pts out of 6 against them.
The signs are that Wolves are getting their act together. I thought the boys looked confident and much more assured on Tuesday, even if it wasn’t a perfect performance. If Kights and Jarvo are fit to play the majority of tomorrow’s game, I expect us to put the Addicks to bed with something to spare.
I don’t doubt for one minute Mick’s application to the job and I don’t question the feel-good factor he’s engendered in the dressing room. His “all for one, one for all” togetherness is to be applauded. However, his reluctance to drop his ‘favourites’ at any price (plus his at-times baffling substitution strategy) has probably prevented us having promotion in the bag already. Sometimes, I get the impression that Mick literally stumbles across a winning formula rather than by design. Still, that’s just my opinion and I’m entitled to it.
Again, I call for every fan to get behind the team tomorrow for the full, 90 mins. It doesn’t matter if we score the winner in the first or last minute, but keeping the noise levels up DOES matter.
Good luck to the team tomorrow, but I believe you make your own luck, so make it happen, boys…

51 – But unlike you, it really isn’t that simple. You can’t deny that Big Chris suffered from a drop in form, and his untimely ban didn’t help either. Point 34 & 53 , excellent points , without the continued use of ‘favourites’ including some being played out of position , i agree am sure promotion would be in the bag by now .
That said we are 3 points clear with 8 games to go & asked start of season if we would take current position , 100 % obviously YES .
If we cross the line to promotion even after our bad spell , is academic as end result is all that matters .
Have i full confidence in Mick , sadly the answer is no & i would have thought most geniune fans would say the same , but if he gets us up a massive fair play to the guy & at the end of the day its ‘Wolves’ we are there to support not individuals & i dont see any of the current players as ‘slackers’ of whom we have had MANY over previous years , so lets back the team 100 % all the way .

60. Yes, if Mick gets us up, he’ll deserve due praise and will doubtless receive it. However, it won’t change the fact that he needs to take a long, hard look at his mistakes along the way. A smart man would reassess himself and realise that there’s no place for favouritism, only performances and results. That’s what matters, nothing else. A ruthless streak is required, not obstinate, pig-headedness. They’re two, different things.
Mick, despite my reservations, does have qualities that are good for Wolves. That’s why, should we get promoted, Morgan needs to spend big, big money to give the man the tools for the job in hand. If Mick then flops, he’ll have no excuses as he did when at Sunderland. He’ll live or die by his own hand.
If I’m brutally honest, I cannot see Mick cutting it at the highest level. He’ll be ruthlessly outsmarted by the great tacticians out there. After all, it’s not always JUST about the quality of your squad…
If we make it, great, I’ll wish McCarthy every success, as we all will, I’m sure. I’ll definitely hope to be proven wrong in every respect!
The truth is, though, Mick’s an honest, workmanlike bloke who won’t be able to take us any further than he has. Ultimately, I think we’ll need a new manager to see us progress -if not just stay- in the Premiership.
As I said, I’d love to be proved wrong, genuinely so. But I doubt it.

60. Ruby Mild.
I personally think that we’ll be searching for a new manager in November, if we get promoted that is. If we don’t make it, then we’ll be looking in May.
Whilst Mick and the team have my full support for the remainder of the season, I really don’t think Mick has the intellect, intelligence or guile needed to succeed as a Premiership Manager. He’s not articulate, so probably a poor communicator (beyond the “let’s get into them” stuff) and his tactical brain is one dimensional.
We’ll see what happens…

Sorry Vim (67) it was extremely pedantic of me. I must admit I destest people on here, like the awful Del Woppio who pick up on the slighest inaccuracy and beat people with it.
I do agree that Mick McCarthy doesn’t possess the tactical nouse of some of the Premiership managers, but after building such a good young team over 3 years we need to give him a chance in the Prem if we get there.
The likely scenario is that we get to Christmas, rock bottom of the Premiership and Steve Morgan will bring in a new manager for the Transfer window in Jan.
But. Let’s get to the premiership before discusing whether we should sack Mick or not eh?
Apologies again Vim, have a good weekend.

prefer to see big chris or sam uprfont to support sylvan. And if you look at our past 3 games when big chris has started weve got 7/9 points and also 3 cleen sheets, big chris “when hes playing” wins every ball in the air, something that keogh still hasnt mastered,he also links up the play 10 times better than keogh. Berra is not as slow as you make out. He is not as pacy as Stearman or Mancienne but would win by 50 metres in a 100m race with Craddock and Collins.
Mick is stubborn with his selection and tactics but they have got us this far. However if we get promoted can you honestly believe that he can succeed in the Prem? Teams let players go when they get promoted as they are clearly only good enough for the Championship. Hard and maybe unfair as it may seem I think Morgan needs to do the same with McCarthay if Wolves are to stay up. Bring in Martinez for me

Disgusting comments. Mick builds a team up for three years and then you want to bring in Martinez and kick him out of the door?
Mick had one go at the premiership and had to do so with a hand full of beans and spare change. Give the guy a chance. If we go up, and thats still a bit ‘if’, then Mick deserves at least one full season in the prem.
Trouble is, impatient fans like your goodself, will demand his head if we are bottom by Christmas.
Just get behind the team and desist with this nonsense my good man. Enjoy the game at Swansea or is it Wolverhampton, which manager you backing again?

Mick certainly has his favourites but i think he’s definately the man for the job premiership or not. He’s a manager in the tradition of Cullis and McGarry, building a young and hungry squad of players. The board have to stick with him as he has got us here from nothing and he deserves a decent investment from the board next year if we make it to premiership. I’m proud of our boys and just hope we put enough points on the board to get us promotion

Sorry Nathan, you are completely wrong. If the miracle happens, I can’t trust Mad Mick to get it right.Signings like Shackell, Hill, Quashie and Reid beggar belief, and his tactics are utter rubbish. We are a one man team, and, take Blake’s goals away, we wouldn’t be in teh top half.Keogh has to go, has does Iwelumo, and as for Craddock and Ward…we wouldn;t get tuppence for them.Remember this, Albion have spent best part of 25 mill to try and stay up, and we won;t get anywhere near that much.McCarthy had money at Sunderland and won one game in the PL, so what will he produce with us. Anyway…10 points clear, and Reading have 9 games left… 2002 anyone?
