Swain: Put right Cullis snub disgrace

Monday 9th March 2009, 11:45AM GMT.

stancullis

That’s the trouble with those infernal lists, writes Martin Swain.

You know you shouldn’t look, you know they will more than likely upset you, but, like a car crash on the other side of the motorway, you just can’t help slowing down for a peek.

There was always a danger that the Daily Mail’s run-down of the “Top 50 Managers of All Time” would continuing the air-brushing of one of football’s most important and significant regimes.

But, as cynical as I am about these Londoncentricites, even I thought that such an august organ would not be so stupid, insulting and downright shamefully-ignorant as to not include Stan Cullis.

I should not have been so optimistic. The bloke who won three championships, two FA Cups and came within a whisker of the double is nowhere to be seen.

Yes, the bloke who saw so early and with true visionary zeal the potential of European and floodlit football can’t get a mention ahead of such luminaries as Wilf McGuinness, Dave Bassett, Keith Burkinshaw, Roy Hodgson, John Lyall and Gerard Houllier. Former Wolves managers Graham Turner, Graham Taylor and Tommy Docherty would be ashamed to be on the list while the Great Man wasn’t. But they are.

OK, we know these lists are most probably compiled by pimply-faced work-experience slave-labour convinced football’s founder was not William McGregor but Rupert Murdoch – if not then the condemnation is multiplied a thousandfold – but even so this represents an oversight akin to omitting The Bible in a list of books that have sold rather well.

A squadron of Midlands hacks will still tell you about the day Cullis, ambling in from his Malvern home to be collected at New Street station for a monthly awards dinner, was greeted with a full kiss on the lips and the words “You are the Master” by a brash young junior of his trade. Well, Brian Clough never did low-key.

Cullis was not ‘the’ master but he was a master, revered by Matt Busby, his great contemporary and the architect of something so enduring and special that 50 years later it still breathes passion and fire into Wolves.

Time and time again, however, he finds his name omitted from the roll call of managerial greats. But this latest howler should be Wolverhampton’s line in the sand. Write to the Mail. Bombard them with your fury. We all should. For this is not just an attack on Wolves, it continues the marginalisation of this region’s contribution to the great game.

It cannot be allowed to proceed any further.

    Absolute Disgrace!

Stan is an absolute legend, he is the 10th most successful manager in English history with 3 Major and 2 Minor trophies won in his managerial career.

Everyone’s always been jealous of how great a club Wolves are and this proves it!

Same old, same old again from the London national media. The same media by the way that recently proclaimed Harry redknapp as one of the best managers in history!!! Need I say more.

Stan made Wolverhampton a focus-point of world football in the 50s but rarely gets the accolades both his efforts, and his fantastic team, rightfully deserve.

We all know though. An absolute legend who should be, and will never be forgotten, by everyone connected with the old gold and black.

I know nothing about that list , how it was compiled or by whom . That Stan Cullis was not included when the likes of McGuiness and Bassett were indicates to me the compilers are not to be taken seriously and the list worthless . Those with knowledge of football history will be fully aware of Stan´s making of a great club and its stupendous triumphs .

The compilers of the list are showing their total ignorance of the history of the game, or their bias, or their laziness in merely referring to previously published lists and not using their own initiative. Whichever one is the motive, Cullis’ omission negates the credibility of the exercise.

Us oldies well remember the golden 50′s. I was there with my Pa when we played Honved, Stan knew what he was doing when he watered the pitch just before kick-off following a horrendous downpour during the afternoon.
The understanding of the English game is what made him THE GREATEST of his time alongside Sir Matt of course.
They will never be forgotten by those of us who were privileged to be there.
Ask the great managers of today, they will remember him i’ve no doubt.

But a point I like to make is, that no matter what teams do you will only get recognition if your team is either in london, or are manchester united & liverpool.

It shows that journalism in this country is poor and it also shows that its a disgrace to snub a man who is held in great esteem to the likes of fergie, cloughie, shankley & busby.

There’s hardly any Man U fans that live in Manchester. The same with Liverpool most scousers are Everton. The main fan base for these clubs is again London and the Home counties. Thats probably beacuse no London club has yet won the European Cup / Champions League.

How Cullis and Wright were and are treated in the national press is a disgrace. The West Midlands region is always getting overlooked. You only have to look at the last 40 years and here are some names that had little or no England recognition- Wagstaffe, Knowles, Richards, Brown, Statham, Little, Francis.
We need to stop this North West/London domination of the Premiership. Wolves going and staying up is the first priority!

I can’t believe Dave Bassett, Graham Taylor and even Roy Hodgson are ahead of our Cullis! Our history is all ways being buried by the so called football experts; we were once the best team in the world in 1950′s but course they lock on to Man Utd and the dreadful night in Munich. I understand the need for respect and to honour the players who lost their lives, one of them was Duncan Edwards who past away a few days after the crash, he was rated the best player of his generation who was from Dudley. I respect the history, however it does seem to me that Wolverhampton Wanderers’s success in that era is all ways over shadowed.

As a regular from 1942 – 1995 I have just succeeded in scraping my 80 year old Dad from the ceiling after I informed him that Hancocks & Mullen were omitted from the top 50 wingers, this news about Cullis sent him into orbit.
