Sheff Wed 0 Wolves 1 – verdict
Saturday 7th March 2009, 5:11PM GMT.
Wolves underlined their return to form with their second away-day success in a week at Sheffield Wednesday.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s fifth minute goal – his 23rd of the season to match his Championship Golden Boot tally last term – put Mick McCarthy’s leaders in firm control at Hillsborough.
Ebanks-Blake netted with a simple downward header from Michael Kightly’s left-footed cross.
Wolves went on to reproduce the dominant performance that saw them end their five-match winless run at Crystal Palace in midweek, in a game where defence was largely on top.
Midfielders Dave Edwards and George Friend both headed wide for the visitors, before Edwards whistled a 20-yarder inches wide as Wolves attempted to turn the screw in another confident display.
But it was Wednesday – who included former Wolves players Michael Gray and Leon Clarke – who wasted the best opportunity of the first period, when Jermaine Johnson ballooned over with only keeper Wayne Hennessey to beat.
Earlier, the excellent Jody Craddock made a goal-saving tackle on former team-mate Clarke after he was left one-on-one.
But nothing should be taken away from Wolves as they pretty much controlled play from start to finish and played some excellent football on a difficult, bobbly pitch.
Chances were few and far between in the second half which saw Hill and substitute Andy Keogh and Richard Stearman booked.
The only save of the second half saw Hennessey smother Johnson’s angled, side-footed effort after Wednesday’s 12-goal top scorer Marcus Tudgay crossed following a mix up between the otherwise excellent Christphe Berra and Hill.
Wolves, who made just one change from the side that beat Palace, made light of the enforced absence of skipper Karl Henry as the recalled Dave Jones formed an impressive alliance alongside the energetic Dave Edwards in central midfield.
McCarthy’s side now have the incentive of two home games to look forward to, starting with a visit of Ipswich on Tuesday, having picked up a maximum return from their last two matches.

Well done lads, it’s all in your hands now, don’t waste it.
Never mind what the other teams are doing.

Get in! Excellent result, plus a bit of a slip up for Reading
Report abuse
And now please make it 7 in a row!
Excellent!

This is more like it, we all knew we would start performing again it was just when. Berra now starting to settle down and looking class, a great performance at a difficult place to play!.
Must stick with Friend he is making a massive difference.
STAND UP IF YOU LOVE THE WOLVES…….!
I went to the game on Tuesday at Palace and thought the lads looked pretty solid. To get the same result today is fantastic and Mick and the boys deserve credit.
We have 9 to play, win the next 2 at home and the gap will widen.
Keep the faith!!
Who cares what Reading or Blues do, why do you all go on about them? It’s about US.
great result lads but i do belive we cant go the rest of the season with to attacking players in the centrle of midfield we need a holder. anyway great win keep it up lads.
Well Done Boys. Good to see the midfield and front two partnerships working out today. Critical couple of home games coming up, two wins will set us up nicely for the away games at Forest and Blues – 7 out of 9 and were in the promised land. No credit crunch excuses Mr Morgan.
Great result, we will still improve during the run in, as reading fade.
Come on you WOLVES you can do it for us Very well done today clean sheet as well WOLVES FOR EVER
Report abuse
It’s in our own hands now. Not even Reading can catch us with the two games in hand. Need to win the next two homes and then I reckon 5 more wins will do it.
Come on Wolves!!
A job well done. Let’s concentrate and keep up the good work. Come on you Wolves!
At last the light at the end of the tunnel, one more game should tell us if it is an oncoming train or the way out of the mess!
Another fantastic away result. Lets now build on these two wins and two clean sheeyt with a couple of solid good home performances. Come on lads you are almost there, one final push to the promised land. KEEP THE FAITH!
After all the stick he got last week, some of it from me, although I did support him against that Irish journalist;full credit to Mick McCarthy for getting us back on track.Pleased Berra played well and two clean sheets for Hennessey.I still would like us to bring in a quality stiker to support SEB,but I know it won’t happen.
Craddock was awesome today and Berra very good. E-B worked his socks off and took his goal well (as always). Kightley again was the provider. DJ and DE did well in midfield. It will be hard for KH to get his place back. Again we win with GF in left midfield. The Sheff Wed centre-halves look terrified against CI (who won loads in the air) and SE-B.
It was a steady performance. we were still a bit shaky and Hennesey was nervous.. Lets go on and beat ipswich next week and we are really rocking then…
Well Done SEB!!
Just what we needed. Clean sheet away from home, early goal and enough class to control the game on a difficult pitch. Bring on Ipswich, never easy, should be a good test on Tuesday. I hope the negative numpties don’t unsettle the lads. UTW.
Great Result, at a difficult place.Keep the same side for midweek.
Nice one lads, keep up the good work and put promotion to bed!
The games are running down and the chances to be overtaken are running out, all we need are a few more wins and we shall be home and dry.
Congratulations also to Mick McCarthy for not changing a winning team, Henry excepted of course – so same again for the next game Mick!
That’s it boys.
2 out of 2!!
Let’s keep it going with another win over mediochre away from home Ipswich when they come up to Molineux on Tuesday.
Lets look at this as though it’s the second run of what might be another run of seven unbeaten games, and shout the lads on and feel the anticipation of going on another long run undefeated. It’s starting to get exciting again! Come on lads!!
That’ll do nicely!
Come on lads, let’s look at this as though it’s the second game of another seven match unbeaten run…. Let’s feel the anticipation and the excitement of a final run in…. Come on boys, take it easy…. but let’s take it!
It goes quiet when the down trodden doom and gloomers have nothing to spout their negative dross about!
Happy clapper and proud!!!!

Just got back from the game i thought berra was quality i cant believe idiots on here was slagging him off the other week because of one bad game! also having hill at left back adds more balance as ward is to attacking sometimes & gets caught out. In midfield playing jones & edwards worked well which shows we dont need a defensive midfielder allways playing like henry or quashie. No negatives today we grinded out a win just hope kightlys ok.
WOLVES AY WE

WOO HOO – keep it up boys.

JUST GOT BACK FROM SHEFFIELD, AND VERY HAPPY. BETTER PERFORMANCE THAN TUESDAY AND TOUGHER OPPOSITION TOO. 3 MORE POINTS SAFELY IN THE BAG, AND ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE TITLE.
I KNOW I NORMALLY AIR ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE BUT I’M NOT A HYPOCRITE .. CREDIT WERE IT’S DUE. WELL DONE LADS. MORE OF THE SAME TUESDAY WILL DO VERY NICELY THANK YOU.
Dont look back win every game from now till the end of season and we are CHAMPIONS !!!!
At last!! Belief and confidence returning to our team. Much improved performances. Now lets really get our teeth into the next couple of home games. Things can only get BERRA !!
SOMEONE SHOT THE ‘FAT LADY’……
ITS NOT OVER UNTIL THE FINAL WHISTLE, SHOW ALL THE CRITICS WHAT YOU CAN DO IN THE NEXT TWO HOME GAMES AND BEYOND.
FOR GOD SAKE DROP HENRY AND ALSO CHRIS UNTIL THEY CAN FIND SOME FORM.
9 to go 5 at home it really is in our own hands now 2 massive games coming up Ipswich and Charlton at home 6 points from these 2 and we will be looking at the finishing post.
We were good first half but faded in the second. Solid peformance but uninspiring tactics mostly revolved around hitting Iwelumo for flick ons. Jones excellent first half and should be paired with Edwards when Henry is back. Berra looked impressive and formed a good partnership with Craddock. Great reception for Gray shame he is still not here!
Great match wolves were on top through out the game,Big Chris looked 10 times the better player than Keogh,Blakey was superb as always,Hill did a great job as well as Jones,Edwards and Berra.4 changes to the team that lost against argyle, and they looked good changes,,2 WINS 2 CLEAN-SHEATS 6 POINTS!!IF WE PLAY THAT TEAM NOW UNTIL THE END OF THE SEASON I HAVE NO DOUBT WE WILL BE CHAMPIONS.
COME ON YOU WOLVES!!!ONLY 9 GAMES TO GO
Report abuse
Excellent performance today – Berra was superb and is beginning to look like a very good signing. Craddock and Foley had good games but Hill looked a bit suspect with a few early mistakes.
Midfield worked extremely hard especially Friend and Edwards who battled hard and on this showing there is no space for Henry when he comes back in. Jones showed his quality on the ball and must continue in the team.
Up front, Iwelumo won everything in the air and should continue with Ebanks in that position.
Overall, excellent job and more of the same needed on Tuesday!!
Calling all Wolves.
2 Home games a must win. Let’s get behind them 100% from start to finish. Not matter what may be going wrong at any time lets back them all the way to the finsh line.
Well done the lads, keep it up on Tuesday and Saturday, It would be good to see someone apart from S E B score.
Win the Ipswich game for big George! It was against that outfit that his season ended.
Just as Codsallman put it, all in our hands now. I’ll settle for more 1-0′s for the rest of the season. 7 more wins should guarantee it for us but I think we should get away with 5 more wins to get auto’d. The other 4 can be draws. I think 89 shuld be enough
Report abuse
The jelly has finally set. Mick says the wobble is over. We will see, every game is a cup final now and it’s teams like Charlton and Forest who are the potential banana skins, maximum concentration and effort are required. The season really starts NOW!!!
all good things come to those how wait ! we are back in up the wolves
Report abuse
Great result!
Interesting to note that when we’ve won there’s hardly any comments. Moaners / whingers retreated into their shells I take it.
Top of the league!

sweet let it carry on

1-0 is a win and if we win the next 7 games 1-0 i’ll be happy, well done lads, good old fight out there ,keep plugging away, just keep looking straight ahead don’t worry about blues or reading,UUUUPPPP TTTTHHHHEEEE WWWWOOOOLLLLVVVVEEEESSSS.

Excellent result, now lets carry on. The whole Club gets a big thumbs up. The moaners are deafing in their silence
Report abuse
1-0 all the way, anyway to get us over that finishing line, well done lads. Tough game on Tuesday against Ipswich, but Charlton on the Saturday should be 3 points I would thought, at least 4 more wins I think we’ll be there. Actually better make it 5 wins.
lets try and get six points out of the next two home games then 4500 of us can enjoy going to forest to back the boys hopefully for another win.
Looks as if we have plenty of players fighting for a shirt but lets hope Kites comes through and for heavens sake keep big C up front again. I think he will start scoring now.
ebanks blake and imulumo our 2 best forwards back together 2 games 2 wins coincidence or what keep them in the side mick
Report abuse
great result games running out its in wolves hand now mick is at last playing the right team please keep it up 2 home games now come on the wolves binda in sunny marbella
Report abuse
A 2nd vital away win in a week and good to see a couple of clean sheets. SEB looks like scoring every time he plays and the midfield looks so much more creative with Jones there. Two home wins this week and then we are in the home straight.
brilliant stuff…..a 1-0 thrashing!! glad to see Mr. Berra stuffed those words down the throats of those who doubted him after 2 games, it was obvious he needed to settle in ,most new players do in any team, and now we’ll see the benefits, 2 clean sheets in 2 shows it. Keep the 2 best CM’s we have in the side and leave the slightly lightweight KH on the bench for the rest of the season, maybe KH being suspended will make MM see exactly what the 2 boys can do in the middle of the park at last….great stuff, onward and upward!!
This is just for you 41(deutch wolf)Keogh should never have been brought on,he should have stayed on the bench and watched Big Chriss…..seriously whats to complain about,we got three points, ten quid on E-Banks at 9-2,,its your time,do a bit of happy clapping.
Another excellent result following the Palace victory. That’s not only two away wins and two clean sheets in the space of four days, but two “doubles” into the bargain. Well done, boys.
Good to see that McCarthy finally seems to have emerged from his mental coma and has made the changes that were necessary. So, well done to Mick for not only showing some common sense, but for inspiring the team to two, essential victories. Now, let’s take full advantage of the situation and take six points in our forthcoming home games. Unless we do that, the efforts at Palace and Sheffield will be wasted.
Get down the Molineux and raise the roof for 90 minutes tomorrow. Let’s brush the Tractor Boys aside and make a real statement to Blues and Reading. Promotion is now there for the taking, so let’s go do it.
Put a fiver on a Sylvan Ebanks-Blake hat-trick tomorrow. You heard it here first… ;-)
C’MON, ME GOLDEN BABBIES!
Jones & Edwards a far better combination. At last MM is picking the players in there correct positions. SEB what a striker, only a matter of time before others chip in too.
Keep on winning wolves and it wouldnt matter what cardiff, reading or blues do!
Well done lads, two on the trot, it proves that when Mick decides not to tinker the team are more settled. BERRA is proving to be a good buy and is now settled in, I think we are going to see a lot more from him. Jones and Edwards are surely a MUST from now on, Their play keeps the opposition out of our half for most of the game. KEEP IT UP LADS.
Funny how southbankbarmy army- jiwal- etc go missing back onto the albion pages when wolves get 6 points and 2 clean sheets? Where is the Berra knockers? The lad needed a few games to settle in first. Completely in our hands now, top scorers in the country, been top since August, no parachute payments, 2nd youngest squad in the division, nothing to moan about really? 6 points would be ideal and we owe ipswich a stuffing for injuring george elokobi and their flukey late equaliser last season

Kites a doubt on tuesday, Jarvis a possible replacement. Also I hope Henry finds himself on the bench as MM did says all season if you play well you keep your shirt. Which would mean Craddock to capt side.
