Top shop pulls out of centre
Friday 6th March 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
Fashion giant Oasis today emerged as the latest big name store to be closing its Wolverhampton shop, staff have revealed.
Workers at the Dudley Street branch say they have been told it will be shutting down imminently. It is not known if jobs will be lost or staff transferred to another store.
The news comes just a day after it emerged Dorothy Perkins would be closing its Mander Centre branch next Saturday, March 14.
A worker from Oasis, which also has a concession in Beatties, said: “We have been told the store will definitely be closing but we haven’t been given an exact date yet.”
Mosaic, the Icelandic-owned company behind the fashion chain, was today unavailable for comment. Wolverhampton city centre manager Kim Gilmour said: “We will be doing all we can to attract more shoppers to the city and more retailers to invest in it.”

And is anyone surprised? Wolverhampton is an awful place to shop. I go to Merry Hill or the Bull Ring
Report abuse
Comes as no surprise.
Most of us would rather go to Mery Hill, Telford or Shrewsbury than shop in Wolverhampton town centre.
It is utterly miserable.

I agree with the other comments that Wolverhampton is an awful place to go shopping and would rather go to Telford or Merry Hill as there are a better class of people who shop there!!

Better class of people in merryhill? its Dudley so hows it a better class? Granted Wolverhampton is a bit of a dump but dont blame in on the people who live there.

cant rememer the last time i shopped in Wolverhampton and i work in the City Centre, much prefer Telford.
this is just a case of not appreciating what you have got guys, im from telford and prefer wolves for shopping, telford to wolverhampton train are packed on saturday with shoppers heading to wolves.
i find this an odd argument.
Oh come on! Wolverhampton’s not that bad!! True the modern Bull Ring’s nice, but you can get lost in Merry Hill!
I do have to agree that Merryhill Centre is better, way better. The last time I went to Wolverhampton for shopping was Christmas and I hardly got anything, its quite frankly rubbish, the Mander centre just seems to have suit shops and pound shops. Shame really.

I can’t take it any more. What is the point in living without style? Good bye, cruel World.

Maybe all those who do not like Wolverhampton should move and make it a better place for those of us who do?

I cannot believe what you people are saying who prefer Telford and Merry Hill to Wolverhampton, Telford is full of doleites and Merry Hill takes you as long to park as you spend shopping. Yeah Birmingham is better but com on be real Merry Hill and Telford !!!!!!!! really !!!!

a) The folks who claim Telford is a better shopping experience than Wton are plainly mis-informed and have stated not one reason to back up this claim.
b) Merry Hill has a few key advantages, namely; i) free parking ii) all indoors, very clean and modern and iii) larger outlets (M&S Home, Next, Debenhams, etc.).
c) Bullring is a different kettle of fish and probably not fair to compare as its a much longer journey for most and so likely reserved for specific trips and not most folks regular shopping destination (plus parking is particularly expensive, traffic can be hellish and the place is generally too busy and thus not pleasant).
Wolves is far from perfect, needs significant updating and lacking in some key names, but still represents a worthwhile and varied shopping experience, with some particularly good individual stores which are found lacking in the “malls” of the aforementioned.
What worries me more is the the idle words of the City Centre manager mentioned in the article, but no specific plans or actions. Talk is cheap, unfortunately running a shopping outlet in Wton is not.
More needs to be done to reflect a shopping experience befitting of a city and not the small town mentality that is still too pervasive in the council.

Wolverhampton is rarely busy and why…
Gangs of youths in hoodies roaming the city centre, attitude wherever you look, less and less shops.
Still, let’s build a fountain in Queen Square, that’ll sort it!

I actually prefer to go to Wolves shopping than Merry Hell or the Bull Ring. Dotty P’s is my favourite shop. :(

In response to fannny…
I guess you’ll just be in Wolverhampton on your own then. Oh, no, sorry, I forgot about all the scumbags that parade themselves in Dudley Street, or the abomination that is Broad Street.

me n my daughter prefer merryhill because its better suited for disabled people esp the parking u can rarely get a disabled space in wolverhampton yet we dont often have problems at merryhill drove round 3 times yesterday still couldnt park on cleveland street

Wolves is very poor if you are looking for quality shopping and a decent amount of choice. We nearly always go to Telford and Birmingham these days.
Since Beatties was bought out by House of Fraser the place has nothing to offer. They have scaled it down so you have no choice but to go to larger stores and it seems the other major retailers are just following suit.
Anyone who thinks Wolves is good for shopping must enjoy frequenting £1 shops as there isn’t much else!

I grew up in Wolverham[ton and it was a class less dump then, and a dump now. Long live Mall style shopping like Merryhill!! City Status- what a joke. University-glorified polytechnic acting as a university!! Council tax high increases no wonder every one is moving out and moaning about the DIVE!!!
