We are not chokers – O’Neill
Thursday 5th March 2009, 11:44AM GMT.
Villa boss Martin O’Neill has hit back at suggestions his side are choking in the Champions League chase – and backed his team to challenge ‘right until the end.’
A 2-0 defeat at Manchester City means Villa have now gone six games without a win and, while three of those were cup matches, their once strong position in the top four is suddenly under attack from Arsenal.
The fifth-placed Gunners, who won 3-1 at Albion on Tuesday night, are now only three points adrift – just three days after Villa missed the chance to go eight points clear of them by conceding two late goals to draw with Stoke.
O’Neill pinpointed Sunday’s setback as a reason for his team’s sluggish start at Eastlands – they never got going until the second half – but he refuted claims his team are panicking under the pressure.
He said: “I don’t think it can be nerves. They (the players) have never been in this situation before, I think there is a genuine excitement.
“We were obviously very disappointed not to complete the victory on Sunday and I think that was in the back of our minds for a while.
“I genuinely think that now, even though we did our best to get over it. It was a game we should have won and we didn’t.
“It will happen again between now and the end of the season and, interestingly, it will happen to some of our challengers, so we have to be ready for it.
“I wouldn’t have thought given the second half performance that anybody would have viewed us as playing with a great deal of nerves.”
O’Neill reportedly took his players on a tour of Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry, plus a look around the Coronation Street studios, ahead of the game, but they couldn’t work out a way past City, who led at the break courtesy of Elano’s penalty before sealing the points late on through Shaun Wright-Phillips.
The team leave today for a break in Dubai before returning to face Tottenham at Villa Park a week on Sunday. Trips to Liverpool and Manchester United then follow.
The Villa manager said: “We are ready to get ourselves built for the last charge. Let’s go for it.
“We are in this position now, we have been here throughout the season because we deserve to be. I think it would be a shame for us to throw it away without a fight.”

Our best run was when we played 4-5-1. It seemed to free up Barry & Young. Is it not worth starting some games with that formation to get a foothold? I only listened to it yesterday but we sounded terrible in the first half.

We are now beginning to pay the price for not dealing in the transfer market, this has been coming for a while and with Spurs, Man Utd and Liverpool coming up, I see another 9 points given away.
Most of the season the talk has been top 4, well I think we will do no better than top 6 and it wouldnt surprise me if we didnt manage that.
Last nights performance was lack lustre, no scrub that, it was total rubbish, we just rolled over for them.
I hope MON and his team of scouts have got a game plan for the close season, because one more bout of empty promises and the fans are gonna vote with their feet.

To be fair though we haven’t had that many games where we’ve been awful. & no one has promised anything. I agree we need to play with a bit more energy but i could see us beating Spurs & Liverpool. Arsenal Still have Liverpool Chelsea & Man U so let’s not give up yet.
What ever happens it’s been our best season in a long time so let’s judge MON at the end of 2012 instaed of after each & every game.

Has anyone noticed that making room for heskey ( one of o.neils favourites) that the defence has opened up this has to be o.neils falure to play old boys like heskey petrov every week with no regard to how the team is playing , and to keep playing the backs out of position week after week , why not play shorey and young in their proper positions leave celluir in at centre half which is his position, and for gods sake use his subs the man is worse than a tinker man, every good manager knows YOU PLAY YOUR PLAYERS IN THEIR OWN POSITIONS, I am afraid o,neil is out of his depth in the modern world of soccer he and his coaching staff are stuck in a nottingham forest time zone, just watch the exodus of senior players from villa park next year..

I think we will end up in one of the european competitions next season, but whichever it is a decision has to be made and given to the fans on exactly how much MON is prepared to spend and if he is going to buy quality.
It’s pointless going into these games without enough skill, and with subs who Martin has bought but now decided are not good enough.
