Wolves sign goalkeeper Ward

Monday 2nd March 2009, 12:20PM GMT.

WARD 3 GD 02

Wolves have completed the shock loan signing of veteran Sunderland keeper Darren Ward.

The move has been forced upon the club, with news that Carl Ikeme’s back injury could take longer to heal than the four weeks initially forecast.

Chief executive Jez Moxey confirmed the 34-year-old, who is training with Wolves, has signed sign for the rest of the season.

Ward is signing as insurance cover for first choice Wayne Hennessey and back-up Shane Higgs, himself on loan from Cheltenham for the rest of the season.

The former Nottingham Forest keeper was watched by Wolves chief scout Dave Bowman, when he made his comeback from a long-term back injury for the Black Cats against Middlesbrough on February 18.

Ward, a retired Wales international, hasn’t played at first team level since December 15, 2007, in a 1-1 draw against Villa.

Although only 5ft 11 ins, Ward is vastly experienced, having played 490 League appearances and he was a key figure in Sunderland’s promotion season of 2006-07, his first season at the Stadium of Light.

He made 30 appearances in that Championship season and kept 11 clean sheets.

Manager Mick McCarthy said: “We need a third keeper, because we can’t depend on the fact that Carl is going to be involved as he is not back in training.

“Darren is a good experienced keeper and if we had one struck down with injury or illness, we would have problems.”

Wolves currently have Matt Murray as well as Ikeme on the long-term injured list.

My concern is not particularly as to how Birmingham and Reading are allowing us to remain on top of the Championship table, but what is happening at Wolves.

Performances, confidence and results are dire. Our squad of players have shown themselves to be woeful and not up to a challenge. If we got promoted then so many quality players would need to be brought in that Morgan would need all of his personal fortune for transfer fees. As he seems reluctant to speculate I think we can assume that to be a non-starter. If we remain in the Championship then our so called star players will be off, leaving us with another rebuilding programme.

Either way McCarthy will have to go. The man is simply not up to the job.

  58. 58

Its gone wrong since Reading at home when MM`s preference for 4-2-4, and playing Ward at left back were shown up. Playing 2 wingers is a unaffordable luxury when a) our 2 midfielders struggle against 3 opposition players, and are unable to protect the back four or get forward, and b) why bother playing 2 wingers if you don`t play a target man who can win a header against big defenders, oh and c) what is the point in having Vokes & big Chris on the bench together, they provide the same option & strenghts – surley one should do an hour and then replace the other.
We are hopeless and hapless and why after 12 games can`t the manager try 4-3-3, play a holding midfielder to protect the back four, and use Jarvis with his exceptional pace as the outlet. At least this would give our midfielders a chance. but not to change the tactics when every other team has sussed us out beggars belief and poses more questions about MM and his coaching. Has anyone seen a near post corner this season yet, to be flicked on by one of our players? I was at Sheff Utd and we were winning 3-0, and Kightly was playing midfield – not stuck out isolated on the right, and he made 2 of the goals, through the middle playing football on the deck, oh and excuse me MM in case you forgot big Chris scored 2 fantastic goals that night, and if I`m right Keogh was not on the pitch. MM is very publically digging his own grave, the solution is in his own hands – lets see if he he changes things in London on Tuesday. I doubt it, but I`ll be there to see for myself.

Kightly is a no.10…that’s where he will end up playing. He sees a killer pass, is two footed and likes a pot at goal. He should be central.

The centre midfield is completely shackled (excuse the pun). Our only tactic has been to release the wide men who are doubled up on…so you go long or cross from deep, which doesn’t suit us even with Vokes Or Big Chris up front.

I would change tactics and formation (what tactics?) for a couple of games…hey we can only continue a losing run can’t we? I’ve heard of “never change a winning side”. Well logic says change a losing side then.

    19) I totally agree. Hennessey’s poor form cannot be defended anymore and likewise Karl Henry.
We need to be positive because as bad as we have been, the others are following suit. In all fairness to Blues they were a bit unlucky but they have another 6 pointer on Wednesday v Bristol City.
Somehow we must get a win at Palace and I will be there alongwith 1200-1500 diehards. I suggest wholesale changes – Higgs/Ward in goal, Friend at left back, Jones central midfield and Iwelumo/Vokes up front. The players they are replacing need a rest and have gone a bit stale.

Instead of slatting him before he has even touched the ball( this I have seen at various matches such as cov and reading) let’s support the lad or else we are going to lose such a talent for the future. And let’s remember, he can’t be that bad or else he would have lost his wales place to myhill. I hope the lad finds a club where the fans support him and nurture him instead of putting him down.

I went Saturday, our midfield was next to useless, Henry is clearly out of his depth, we have no creative midfielder, if MM can’t put fall outs to one side (and his brush with Keane suggests he can’t) how are we ever going to improve, yes men are yes men because they’re in the team, god forbid you have a different opinion, whats wrong with being p****d off because you’re not in the team, especially if the guys with the shirt arn’t performing? get a grip Mick, show some dignity, put jones at least in the squad!!

Until MM can get over his players having different opinions, or falling out with him (and the Keane episode suggests he won’t) he will never pick our best team, yes men are yes men because they’re in the team. There are players on the outside, better than we have in the team, Jones for example, I can’t believe that Henry is going to play himself out of this bad patch, he just isn’t good enough, Hennessy lacks confidence and our attack lacks height, Steerman has started believing his own press, he’s a decent player but he needs to learn his trade, and accept that he isn’t quite there yet, Kights looked to be getting stuck in on Saturday, but I can’t help thinking he’s played out of position, Berra is playing badly, because he’s in a bad team, no coincidence a fact, MM needs a plan B (a plan A would have been good on Saturday) we are too one dimensional, we don’t/can’t vary our game when needed

For anyone who is interested I have looked at some stats on our so called good and bad players!

These are based on players starting the game – not subs

    D Jones p-23,w-16,d-4,l-3,pts52 average 2.26
    without DJ p-12,w-3,d-3,l-6,pts12 average 1

Now does that suggest we are better or worse without Jones? remember only based on players starting the game.

    Here are some others

    Hennesey p22,w10,d6,l6,pts36 average 1.64
    Ikeme p12,w9,d0,l3,pts27 average 2.25

    Henry p34,w19,d7,l8,pts64 average 1.88
    Edwards p13,w5,d3,l5,pts18 average 1.2
    Quashie p3,w0,d0,l3,pts0 average 0.00

    Iwelumo p19,w12,d4,l3,pts40 average 2.11
    Vokes p2,w1,d0,l1,pts3 average 1.5

    Collins p19,w11,d2,l6,pts35 average 1.84
    Stearman p31,w17,d6,l8,pts57 average 1.84
    Berra p4,w0,d1,l3,pts1 average 0.25
    Mancienne p8,w5,d2,l1,pts17 average 2.13

This doesn’t tell you the impact a player made coming off the bench, but t does show some interesting facts!!

i think MAD MICK is trying to turn back time by keep on buying or loaning sunderland rejects he thinks wolves still play in white and red shirts ,when we first played,i would not mind at least the players played and won they played for there shirt and pride .thie down turn started when mimms left the club you only got to watch the warm ups and at half time the way that the goalie warms up nowhere near mimms.mad mick trys to keep everything hush hush but it always back fires and ends up having to have whats left in the tranferwindow every one goes else where if mm does stuff it up yu can bet that moxey will,mm goes on about how young the players are they are not the youngest look at the gunners last season ,its about time mick took his rose tited glasses off play the players in there right positons and play every match to win and get the job done this season when they have got the points only then he can start to mess with the team.we need some old heads in the squad like gray, but again he has let him go.the team should watch the match that they havebeen in then they will see what every loyal fan will see and have been screaming about.still hope we can do it

    76. don’t think potter will be able to play against us as he’s only on loan but gray and leon clarke are playing well and will have a point to prove (i fear for us saturday)we need 3 points at palace tomorrow as they have a few injuries, last week blues should of hammered em (missed 3 sitters)if we don’t win this one the players will all totally lose confidence (if they haven’t already)we’re not gonna get many more chances than we’ve already been given, the chasing pack are closing in and sooner or later blues and reading are gonna start winning games too.we need to cut out the ridiculous mistakes we are making in defence and start playing through the midfield this means we need a ball player (d.jones)we need to stop lumping the ball, bypassing the midfield as we did saturday and get the ball on the deck as i know we can play good passing football as we were earlier in the season, not long ball lumped from the back up to 2 small forwards (keogh and seb)if this was micks plan he should of bought ewolumu on sooner against plymouth.my team would be,gk hennessey. df friend collins berra foley.mf quashie d.jones kightly jarvis(if fit)or ward.st iwelumo and seb. just think the team needs shaking up as too many players taking their shirt for granted and have not been up to high standards they set earlier in the season.if kites doesn’t perform first half replace him with reid, kites was terrible saturday only saw him beat one player he need talk about going off to play in the prem he’ll be lucky to stay at wolves with his poor recent performances.

Understandably alot of fans are really annoyed at the moment BUT its about time we all stopped this “knee jerk” reactions and took several deep breaths

No amount of screaming at MM, the players, the club or each other is going to make any difference whatsoever

MM said that the fans got behind the team and deserved far better than we got – the players heads are goodness knows where?

The players jointly have a responsibillity to do more than “put in a shift” – just as much as MM and staff have a responsibillity to give leadership and show the way

The “jolly” to Spain had little effect in my view and perhaps a “change” in tactics/ short sharp shock/ discipline etc would have been far more valuable than a rest!

Perhaps its time the sports psychologist at the club earned his corn and got to work on the players mindsets

A total block on any further players or staff ready made interviews in the press/ media and a total focus on the next game and the next etc

Yes other teams in the mix failed aswell BUT we need to put our own house inorder first before its too late!

What message does this send ou to Hennesey?
What message does this send out to Higgs?
It is no coincidence that Henneseys form dipped after the departure of Mimms as coach.
Rumourville says could work with arrogant MM.

No wonder our bright youth team are all despondant after shinin brightly 18 onths ago and getting us to the playoffs, now they are cast offs , replaced with Ward, Collins, Quashie, Reid and others!

This is really turning into a farce, you couldn’t script this better.

Player after player signed by MM under perform but retain their place, better players play and do well but get dropped – MM is losing it!

I do not necessarily want him to go BUT if and I say if we do by the skin of our teeth go up – Can you see him pitting his whits against th likes of Ferguson, Redknapp, Venga oh my!

This man is ripping the heart out of our club – all of the wonderfull work put in by Chris Evans ( who couldn’t work with MM ) has been tossed away, we are going backwards in terms of youth development!

Whilst I have also “heard” similar rumours – BUT in the absence of any concrete proof I can only say are “rumours”

As for the youth academy; Mr Thelwell was being interviewed on Radio WM last night and he gave a very good account of himself – and it appears that our youth are in very good hands – (9 full time staff involved and yes MM does get to see them in action)

Yes Chris Evans did alot for the youth academy but that is now history – so we should move on
There are always two sides to every coin; MM may not be my personal choice of manager for our great club BUT he is the manager at the moment and all we can do is hope that he can sort it out and quickly

    UP THE WOLVES!

Not bothered about Hennessey being dropped he has been poor. An experienced head is a wise decision. I am going to put my neck on the line and say bring back collins tonight alongside craddock who have played together, my team would be:

    Ward
    Foley
    Craddock
    Collins
    Stearman
    Kightly
    Jones
    Quashie
    Jarvis
    Iwelumo
    Ebanks blake

Enough cover from Quashie for the defence and enough creativity to win the game. Collins is better away from home.

But what really sold it to mick is that his great great grandad is IRISH ! hahahaha

Micks argument is that we need cover if Hennessey or Higgs get injured. Well, they are not yet, and if they did get injured, he could bring up academy player Woolley and put him on the bench. The chance of our third choice keeper getting a game is not that big anyway is it?

By the back in his Millwall days Mick brough in 5 goalies. Young Danish goalie Nielsen who was of them, describes in his autobiography how all keepers where wondering what was going on.
At training, only two of them could be used during practice matches (Mick didnt fancy goalkeeper training back in those days, as he thought it was useless) meaning that 3 of them where just standing by the goalposts waiting!!!
