Saddlers face defensive crisis
Monday 2nd March 2009, 10:51AM GMT.
Walsall boss Chris Hutchings is facing a defensive crisis after Anthony Gerrard limped out of Saturday’s 2-0 win over Yeovil.
Gerrard was forced off with a tight hamstring, leaving Manny Smith as the Saddlers’ only recognised centre-back ahead of the trip to Scunthorpe.
Striker Michael Ricketts played the last half hour in defence with Stephen Roberts and Rhys Weston still sidelined through injury.
With Gerrard a doubt for the game at Glanford Park, Hutchings admitted his concern.
He said: “It’s always a worry when a centre-back goes off and Rhys is hopefully joining in today, but the game might be a bit too early for him.
“Anthony had a spasm in his hamstring and it was tightening up as the game was going on, so we thought we’d better put Ricketts at the back and get him off.
“Michael played there for us a very brief time a couple of matches ago, so he can head it and clear it and that’s all we wanted to do.
“We were winning the game, so I didn’t feel I had to make wholesale changes.”
The boss said he was prepared to move into the loan market, but wouldn’t have any hesitation in asking Ricketts to step in again.
Hutchings added: “We’re confident and I’m sure if I had to ask Michael to be centre back for a game he’ll do the job for me.”

There’s been no cover at CB all season, a point which many fans have commented on. Not sure you can call it a crisis if everyone could see it coming.

matt if you have nothing good to say, dont say anything at all. ricketts has done well for walsall this season so get off his back you moron.

Hear hear Matt, Ricketts is lazy, he should have scored more goals and been fitter. I would be surprised if he is here next season.

If he’s up against a big lump of a striker he’d do ok. if it’s anyone quick we’d be screwed.
Ricketts is lazy, but he’s the most talented player at the club by a country mile. Everyone knows what to expect from him and as long as he’s scoring and setting others up who gives a damn how lazy he is!!!!
Some people need to get a grip, we’re in League one. In the main you get lazy quality, or enthusiastic but not the most gifted, if Ricketts made the effort he’d still be in the prem.
Maybe even if we had been on a bad run I could accept being critical of him, but we’re doing well. Some people just want any excuse to moan!

Well im just providing an honest opinion. I do dmit that he is the best player as far as quality goes. But he is so frustrating cos he can do so much more if he puts a bit more workin/. How a profesional footballer can be as unfit as him i will never know. he could score 20 to 30 goals a season with more effort. The amount of times he is waking round the midfield area when we burst forward i lose count.
My comment wasnt meant to be negative just that he aint got what it takes to be a centre half and that he needs to work harder.
