Wolves 0 Plymouth 1 – verdict
Saturday 28th February 2009, 5:10PM GMT.
Wolves looked nervous throughout as their struggles continued against Plymouth at Molineux.
Mick McCarthy’s side were left with an uphill battle almost from kick off, when Paul Gallagher scored after just 39 seconds for the visitors.
But with second-placed Birmingham not playing and Reading losing to Nottingham Forest, Wolves remain three points clear at the top of the Championship with 11 games left.
Wolves struggled throughout to find any cohesion or any of the free-flowing play that appeared to have put them back into form in the 2-2 draw against Cardiff last Sunday.
Gallagher’s opener left them nervy, ragged-looking and the home side failed to force any worthwhile saves until the second half.
Andy Keogh was inches away from connecting with Michael Kightly’s early cross, while Kightly sliced wide and Kyle Reid finished disappointingly with a shot straight at keeper Romain Larrieu.
Wolves presented more of a threat after the break as they piled forward in search of an equaliser.
Dave Edwards headed wide and rattled the bar with a volley – although the referee blew for a free-kick against Wolves just as the ball struck the woodwork, before a potentially match-turning moment in the 54th minute.
That was when Wolves appeared to have a certain penalty turned down, after Jamie Mackie shoved Reid in the area- only for referee Carl Boyeson to ignore the deafening appeals as Molineux erupted.

What’s going on! Wolves now have 1 win in 11 games. The alarm bells are beginning to ring and it’s only through sheer luck that Wolves are still top. So, what is Mick going to do? I still have faith that we’ll nick a promotion place but if we don’t go up then questions will need to be asked about whether he is the right manager. At present he needs to be able to be given the chance & finish the job up to the end of the season, but if we blow it then he’s not up to the task. Worryingly shades of the 2001-2002 season are starting to resurface. I hope history is not repeating itself!

I really did not expect wolves to lose today, luckily other results have gone our way but if wolves dont get back to winning ways straight away we will be looking at the play offs , i just cant understand how we can go from rolling teams over 2- 3 nil to the poor run of form we are displaying now.we are still top more by luck than merit , come on Wolves show us the form that got you to the top in the first place .

They say don’t panic. They say don’t worry. Well I aint…BUT…McCarthy has now got to go. The players need a manager who can kick backsides. They obviously have got too complacent.
Fortunate for Wolves, Reading also lost.

Its Time For Mick to get the sack, this is a complete joke, we should have won the league by now, morgan open them eyes and sack him before we miss out, because reading and the blues will turn it round , but i know for a fact mick & the wolves will not less we change the manager. never rated him, it showing now!!!!

1 win in 11. No way will that team get promotion.

I am still trying to stay positive and I think we will get into the playoffs at least, but it’s now becoming plain that when MM had the chance in January he should have got in some older wiser players. Merson on Sky said if Wolves go up they will need 20 new players and I think he’s right. If we can’t break down teams like Plymouth and Coventry then we are nowhere near ready for a season in the prem. MM you still don’t convince me that you are anything more than a one trick pony. I hope you can convince us all that you are a long term prospect. Come on Wolves!!!

I don’t think in all of my years as a Wolves supporter I have ever been so disappointed with a result as this one. We are top of the league and we entertained a poor side embroiled in a relegation battle. Our players are top drawer and the only person to blame is the clown of a manager. Any half decent manager could come to the club tomorrow and get this team promoted. This cr*p about not sacking a manager who is top of the league is just that, cr*p. He’s lost it. We just lost to a relegation team, top of the league, we’re having a laugh. There is no chance that our manager will cope in the premiership, even if the other clubs force us into promotion by being equally inept. If this club genuinely wants to be a premiership club we need a premiership manager now. If we are happy to be what we are, the laughing stock of the division, we should keep him. It breaks my heart to realise that after all these years, I’ve had enough; stuff the early bird. No more spoilt weekends, no more moving matches with no thought to the supporters, no more hoping like a child at Christmas to be let down by incompetence. Mick, you just dare blame the supporters for that today, you just dare.
This is about as bad as it gets, if muppet mick wasnt top of the league, on this form he would be sacked, its only because of the poor sides in this division we are were we are, if we do win this league i would have to say the others let us win it, dross football and tatics, sack him now.
Mr Morgan, please come out and explain what the hell is going on at this club.
I will not line your pocket with my hard earned until you stop employing idiots like McCarthy and Moxey. This season is becoming the most depressing ever. At least in the 1980′s we had no money.
abysmal, nothing less… Some players (most) need to understand what it means to wear the old gold. They should play with pride. I didn’t see too much of that today apart from two players. (you know who you are and I refuse to come on these pages and slag wolves players off!). Lads, imagine going to the factory every day getting grimy, soaking in the bath every night trying to get the suds and metal out of your pores and then paying a large proportion of your wages to watch that! Don’t talk to us about putting in a shift mc. WE DO!!!!! So that you and yours drive round in lovely cars and live in houses we could only dream about. You’ve let us down again. And I guess it will be so at the end of the season. I shall renew my earlybird but my thoughts are that when a player isn’t picked he should sit in the north or south bank and see what it means to be a Wolves fan, every shot, every miss- the way we do! Every ball! Sadly missed on a bunch of overpaid shandies and their incompetent manager.
WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH WOLVES SERVED UP TODAY. If wolves went up they will be completely embarassed by the premiership team. Karl Henry ought to be dropped, an inept captain if ever i saw one!
Didn’t seem to want to play today. Second best to every ball, but ref was on their side. Should have had at least one penalty for the push in the box. Sad to see such talent not being shown. I’ve got deja vue about the situation – 11 points clear and the Baggies go up instead of us.
Never mind what Reading, Cardiff or Blues are doing!
It’s what we are doing that counts!
We can’t rely on other teams – The players need inspiration, leadership and some better tactics (Now who’s department is that exactly?)
How do you happy Clap that. Worst performance of the season. Southbank sang there nuts off in the second half for nothing. I was there and it’s just not good enough argue with me if you like but i’m not going to be happy with the way we are playing and i’m sick of looking for other results to keep me happy. At this rate we won’t make the playoffs and perhaps don’t deserve to. Wheres the Plan B MM.
Hopeless absolutely hopeless!!
How does Andy Keogh get a game for the Wolves? He adds absolutely nothing to the team and his critics were more than vindicated when Iwelumo came on to show us all what we have been missing throughout this bizarre love afair between MM and Andy Keogh!
Further sarcastic applause greeted Keogh’s eventual and long overdue departure but you can guarantee as sure as eggs is eggs he’ll be back in the starting line up on Tuesday. This player and McCarthy’s beligerence in playing him will be what costs us this season!
Furthermore can I appeal for all of our players to refuse to give bulls**t quotes to the E&S such as
SEB “I’m the next Bully” = ‘I couldn’t hit a barn door today’
Edwards – “There’s plenty more from me” = ‘plenty of huffing and puffing but poor passing and no end result’
Craddock – “Best team i’ve seen in years” = 1 win in 11 and that pile of pap today, he must have been talking about Man Utd!
JUST SHUT UP AND LET YOUR FOOTBALL DO THE TALKING!!!!!!!
You could see today how the confidence has totally drained from the players. I have been impressed with Berra since he has come to the club but today he was very shaky. It seems walking into a team that can’t win has totally drained his confidence. The early goal was disastrous for us as it hit the players for six and the confidence just ebbed away. Saying that we still could have won despite playing poorly and the ref was shocking. We should have had two pens.
On the bright side we are still top and if we can go to palace and get a win then things really could change in our favour. Thought Iwelumo was impressive when he came on and should start the next game. When we were winning at the start of the season it was when big Chis was on fire and is key to our success.
Now to all the so called fans who make comments on this website. The majority of you should be ashamed of yourselves with comments like “Sack Mick” when we are sitting on top of the league. It is just testament to how good we must have been for the first half of the season to still be top despite only winning one in 11! Instead of being so destructive and sad posting negative comments get to the Molineux and get behind the team. No on second thoughts don’t bother we don’t need ‘fans! like you. Disgraceful losers

I’ve never been so angry about a gsme in my 25 years watching the Wolves. This is not a bilp it’s a recession.
We’ve had the usual rubbish in the press from Mick and the players. Dave Edwards “raises the bar” with his performance against Cardif. There was nothing more certain than that he would be rubbish today, and he was. His passing was woeful.
Jones should never have been dropped. He’s apparently fit and the guy on WM wondered if there was a problem between him and McCarthy. Perhaps he had the temerity to ask “Why have I been dropped Mick?”
Someone said last week that Mick’s persistence with Keogh will cost us promotion. We had more chances after Iwelumo came on than we had in the previous hour. The strikers who got us to the top of the league should still be playing together.
Jones should be back in midfield. He had a major role in our winning runs. I’d also sooner see Collins and Stearman back in the centre of defence.
Mick made the mistake of trying to fix something that wasn’t broken. However, with a bit of sensible team selection we can still win this league.

MM we need answers to critical questions:-
1. Where is David Jones? Why isn’t he figuring?
2. Are you watching the same game as the fans in the stands? If not go and sit in there and communicate by phone to the touchline you WILL see a different game – you will observe what we observe that a) Keogh is not a target man / striker.
b) Henry is not cutting the mustard.
c) Kightly needs a rest.
3. Where is the leadership / passion / drive?
The only plus is that you are now forced to change the midfield with Henry suspended but who will you bring in? You need to be bold. Take a gamble play Jones & Edwards. Put Iwelumo or Vokes back up front if you are going long. We need leadership on & off the field . Now is the time – its still there for us!! Come on you Wolves

Well after today, it looks as if no team wants to win the Championship this season!
Wolves are sitting on top only because the others cannot find any form either but one thing is totally clear, whichever 3 teams do go up, they will not stay in the Premiership for very long!
If no team can consistently win games, put points on the board and maintain any type of form then the Premiership will be a ‘one season wonder’ for all 3 promoted teams will be murdered by the better class of players and because they are used to that level of football.
I’m not sure that calling for McCarthy’s head is the answer, neither is barracking the players for the simple answer is, not one team is good enough, not least since the turn of the year anyway, to justify promotion but of course 3 teams must go up – and God help them when they do!
Why does that fool keep playing Keogh up front when although he works is never going to be anygood? Why play Reid who is very poor player. What has happened to Jones? Why not play five in midfield and don’t play our wingers because our only forward who can shoot [Blake] needs the ball to his feet. Knightly is although our best player apart from Blake needs a rest and is clearly not the player he was last season. Why not get somebody on loan who can give us belief and fire for the rest of the season. If MM fails from this position he needs to be sacked!

“There is no success like failure, and failure is no success at all”.For the last 2 months most of my wrath has been aimed at Morgan and Moxey for their obvious lack of ambition in the Jan transfer window and subsequent loan market, but it is becoming very difficult not to be frustrated with our manager.Just how many central defenders is he going to sign, and at what cost, before we get a decent player? And how many more players is he going to fall out with ,the Davies situation was bad enough but now he wont play our best passer in David Jones. And the treatment of Gyepes that has just come to light was shameful.

Been to the game today. I haven’t been a knocker of Andy Keough, but not good today! Really struggled to keep the ball. The team looked panicked from start to finish. Defensively we continue to look insecure. In midfield the absence of David Jones is baffling. Up front we are totally reliant on SEB for goals. The door remains wide open for automatic promotion but we have only won one of the last 11 and will surely need to win at least 6 of the next 12.

Well done to the South Bank for their rousing support at the start of the second half – the best for ages for about 20 minutes – we even got quite rowdy in the Billy quiet.
However it is quite difficult to keep that up when whats going on on the pitch is so disappointing. I know confidence is low, and I know that we need to support & encourage a young team, but we can hardly critise fans for showing their frustrations at the end. We should have put this promotion challenge to bed by now. Freakish results elsewhere are keeping us top.
I question the continued absense of Jones, what ever he has done, surely the hatchet has to be buried now (thats good man management isn’t it?), and why didn’t we bring in a seasoned professional or two in January to settle the nerves of our young guns – in the Paul Ince / Denis Irwin mold? It worked last time.
Anyway in Mick we still trust. Just about.

There is lack of the ” Fire In the Belly” and faith in their ability. The determination in the players is truly found wanting for a team leading the divison.
Having led the division for so long, they lack confidence and the team cannot depend on luck to be still leading.
They must be incisive and grind out wins from here on or they can say goodbye to their promotion dreams.
It indeed fait accompli and for the support give, it is indeed a big letdown from the management to the players.
Is there still belief in the team and their ability and confidence gauging from their performance????
Don’t let youself down as a team. Is this pressure that you can’t take, Wolves, if so, get out of the kitchen and let’s not talk promotion, for the Premier league you will not last.
Do yourself a favour and pulled up your socks and grind out those wins and a road to recovery.

Get behind the team and support them – once all the games have been completed, then that is the correct time to try to sort things out.
All we need to do at this stage of the season is get enough points to go up, any way will be fine by me. But by booing the team, all you are doing is making sure we won’t go up.

Can we now accept that this is not a dip in form?
That is now 1 win in 11 – that’s a quarter of a season!!!
Let’s be honest if we had started the season like this then not many people would be on here saying “don’t panic it’s only a dip in form” would they?
I am not calling for Maccarthy’s head just yet but it is getting close.
Fair play to him that he has come out and said that he takes responsibilty for the poor result, now all he has to do is swallow his foolish pride and start to play the players who got us into this great position at the top of the table.
Just because a player doesn’t tip his forelock every time you walk in the room doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t play! Get over your ego MM and play Dave Jones and play Iwelumo from the start.
oh and please play a left back at left back (yes I know Ward has covered this position well earlier in the season but he has been well and truly found out now).
I was absolutely convinced that we would win yesterday and am gutted today. The trouble is if we can not beat a team that has not won in 10 games, then who will be able to beat and do we really deserve to win this division? I just can’t see where the next win is coming from now but wherever it does come from it needs to be soon!
Up the Wolves!

WE WERE HOPELESS SAYS MM.Well mick look in the mirror, some of your team selections.substitutions since xmas have been HOPELESS.Yesterday take off a winger Reid bring on a target man Chris and move Keogh to the wing.ONLY YOU WOULD DO SOMETHING SO DUMB AS THAT.Then wait until last 7(seven)minutes to take the dummy off and bring on Vokes.Obviously your love of certain players comes before promotion.Well as much as i want you to prove me wrong it’s becoming increasingly unlikely. You are very lucky that other teams are cocking up also.

Is it just me who thinks MM should have reverted back to as close to the team that got him all those points, i.e D.J. back in the middle big Chris back up front….sorry if it sounds negative but MM isnt good enough whent he chips are down his tactics and timing for subs are wrong.
Another point I will say and having watched him play every game so far is why the hell did we pay 2.3 mill for Berra, mark my words he is as bad as Collins, no sorry Collins can head the ball better than him..total rubbish so far, add him with Captain Invisible, and cant score in a brothel Keogh and you wonder why we are struggling, if you dont like what i say tuff after what i watched yesterday I will say what I like!

YET MORE PROOF THAT THIS WOLVES SIDE WILL GET SLAUGHTERED IN THE PREM. IT’S A MIRACLE WE’RE STILL TOP .. AND PROVES BEYOND DOUBT, WHICH EVER 3 TEAMS FINALLY GET PROMOTION .. WILL CERTAINLY COME STRAIGHT BACK DOWN. CHELSEA WOULD HAVE MORE CHANCE OF BEING RELEGATED NEXT SEASON THAN WOLVES HAVE OF STAYING UP.
THIS IS WITHOUT DOUBT THE POOREST CHAMPIONSHIP THERE’S BEEN IN A LONG WHILE, AND IF WE GET PROMOTION IT WILL BE BY DEFAULT. RATHER THAN WIN PROMOTION WE’LL HAVE BEEN GIFTED IT BY TEAMS WHO ARE EVEN WORSE THAN WE ARE AND COULDN’T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR INEVITABLE SLUMP.
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A WOLVES SIDE WIN PROMOTION WITH A TEAM THAT HAD AT LEAST A 50/50 CHANCE OF STAYIN’ UP .. BUT THESE CLOWNS WILL BE HARD PUSHED TO ACHIEVE EVEN DERBY’S 11 POINTS TOTAL. PATHETIC!!

The plot has been well and truly lost. Please do not start bleating about the booing, you are lucky no one had a gun.Week in and out we come to the match, for a man on his own, by the time you count up travel, a couple of beers, an overpriced Molineux pie etc. etc. a serious dent has been put in £50, double if you take a child with you. This amount may represent a bet on a horse to most of the players who earn more in a month than the average fan sees in a year, however it’s a lot to most of us.Many oif us wish we had the opportunity to earn very good wages for kicking a bag of wind about on a Saturday. Due to the team’s pathetic display in Moscow the Villa manager has offered a dinner to the travelling fans which he will presumably pay for. Mick, we expect 25000 bacon sarnies to be made available at the earliest opportunity. I would prefer the egg to be between the bread on the bacon and not on our faces at the end of the season. If we drop into a play off place we will be eaten alive.

We had to miss the game yesterday for family reasons – and frankly we are relieved we did. Every Wolves supporter must be feeling so deflated. We are amongst those who travel a long distance for home games (300 miles round trip in our case) – and those return journeys can be so dismal when things don’t go right. Anyway, I’ve supported Wolves since 1952 and I always will, come what may.

Can someone get a message to Mick, putting Andy Keough up front in the middle and pumping long high balls to him does not work, how many of the crowd could see this simple conclusion? When big Chris came on the tactic was fine…dissapionted with the result. The Plymouth players were rewarded with a Mcdonalds meal on the way back down the motorway as we were on return to Redruth, only difference they had a smile on their faces and 3 points.

Dear Mick
I hate having to say this because I am a very positive person but that performance in front of all those kids was a disgrace to football.
Mick McCarthy and his very lucky leprechaun’s, a pantomime at its best “Hi ho Hi ho its on the pitch we go with a ball and a boot for a load of loot Hi ho, Hi ho Hi ho Hi ho” its just a pity it was supposed to be a football match.
This was top of the league verses virtually the bottom, a blip you can defend but not ten in a row if the season had started at Christmas we would be lower in the League than Plymouth sad but true.
This squad began to go off the boil well before Christmas and it required strengthening in the January window, two strikers and two centre backs would have done fine, you had done the hard work by getting the team to the top of the league.
This should have attracted better quality players, the type of player that would give us a slight chance of staying in the Premiership.
We are now relying on other clubs losing to stay at the top of the league; in fact we are there under false pretences, the top of a bad bunch.
Your comments relating to being in a better position if we were chasing don’t stack up as most of the other teams lost their games leaving Wolves at the top of a very poor league, again.
I hope you will agree that most of the team played badly, after ten minutes into the game it was obvious that we needed some height up front and there were two on the bench so why did we have wait a hour to get the change?
Even then we would have been very lucky to get a goal it would just have been better to watch. Please don’t take that team to the Premiership it will ruin our entertainment, a number of us have delayed our season ticket purchases to see how hungry you lot are to provide us with a team to compete next season.
You are right about one thing the supporters are fantastic it was unbelievable to see them queuing to give to the Paul Birch children’s fund.
In fact it would be in order for the Chief Executive, the Manager and the Players to give any bonus earned through promotion to the Paul Birch fund as they certainly won’t have earned it following their performance since Christmas.
Go up with pride rather than like a load of over paid amateurs scraping the barrel.

I have had enough of these overpaid under performing Wolves players. If their football was as good as their egos we’d have won the title by christmas.
We have a pig headed manager who will not admit he is wrong, having been lucky for most of the season it has come home to roost. We are an average side.
If, and I say “If” we go up this club neds huge changes!
It is no coincidence that performances became worse after losing Mimms and Evans. Coaches who motivated and enhanced the skills of players. How soul destrying for them to see their young guns go from talented youngsters who were good enough when MM arrived to keep the team up, but surplus to requirements when MM was allowed to get the cheque book out.
Were the kids really worse than messers Ward, Collins, Keough, Quashie – What is our loss has been premier clubs gain.
Promotion isn’t assured but would you want to put our precious club in the hands of MM whilstin the Premier League? I wouldn’t!

Just one of 25,710 dispirited fans wondering what to make of it all. “We were hopeless says our manager” and I take full responsibility for today. Well there’s a rallying cry that we can all get behind for Palace on Tuesday! As the tag may suggest I have been at this support the Wolves stuff for a very long while now. No I’m not an expert but over all the years that was as bad as it gets with not a single redeeming feature. It won’t help to start yet another debate about the merits or failings of individual players. Likewise the merits and qualities or failings of the current manager are as always down to personal oppinion. The thing that ultimately binds us all together through thick and thin is the desire to see Wolves be successful. For a moment I want to be a neutral observer and to that end make the following points.
Do we really think that this crop of young exciting players can achieve what we all yearn? Do we believe they are in the right hands to improve and fulfil their potential?
My personal view on both counts is sadly no. SO why if the target is Premiership football have we in the last year given extended contracts to people who we see struggling to make an impact in the Championship? MM once said that Steven Ward was probably “the best all round player I have ever signed in my managerial career” as he handed him a long term deal. I thought I remembered us buying not one but 2 new full backs as cover just in case Mr Ward did’t quite cut it in his new role.A new 4 year deal for Neil Collins you remember the guy he’s the one who has been replaced by that new guy who cost £2.3 m from Hearts.I won’t buy or bring in on loan anyone who in my oppinion isn’t better that what we have already so said MM. Try telling that to the fans and Messrs Shackell,Friend,Ward D, Shackell,Potter,Elliott,Eastwood and the most recently seemingly not good enough anymore Stearman and Jones? Bolton are lining up a summer £10m bid for Hennessey and Kightly. Don’t let this one get away Mr Moxey get it done now just in case their scouts make another visit to spy on their current form!
I love the Wolves and even this latest spell of muddled thinking won’t change my support. As I left the ground yesterday, that was it I was definitely not renewing my season ticket!
Nearly 3 hours later we were back in Buckinghamshire and my son Matthew had taked me round “you can’t give up on them now Dad” I start at Wolverhampton University in Sept!
Oh all right then but please to whoever is in charge of Wolves destiny as we try to move forward “could you please hurry up and get it right, I’m 70 in June” times running out!!

I’ve actually been a MM fan for 20 years and will never forget what he did with the Republic of Ireland in 2002 under very difficult circumstances. However, it is time for him to step aside or be removed. He won’t stand a chance in the PL if for some amazing reason we get there. To have a talented team like this implode over the most critical two months of the season can only be the fault of the managerial staff. If we fail to get promotion he’s out anyway so why not make a move now ? Desperate times call for desperate measures.

It is obvious that Mad Mick doesn’t have the faintest idea of how to stop this slide. Doers he even know what is his best team?
He can’t do, because he keeps playing ‘Powderpuff Keogh’ over proper attacking players. A victory of long-distance running over football!
Eventually, after much criticism he stopped playing Collins, who is a walking disaster in the Championship. Played one league too high for his capability!
The other bad “favourite” is Henry. No matter how badly he plays, he gets a place in the next game!
What is this doing to the brains of the other young players? They know that Henry is playing rubbish, and he picked above them!
This reminds me of the way he eventually brought the Eire national team to its knees, and he was sacked and replaced by somebody with tactical nuance.
It is obvious, even to the Happiest Clapper, that we are now at the stage where nothing MM does works, and he has totally lost the plot.
If the season is to be saved, then Mick needs to go now before he causes even more damage, and we get a new experienced, inspirational manager to save our promotion season!
Bring on Curbishley!

39 seconds and we concede yet another sloppy goal, how many defenders has Mick had seen he been at the club and still our back four isn’t good enough. First season in charge saw Breen and Craddock, with the arrival of Collins, plus Rob Edwards. Fullbacks consisting of McNamara, Clapham, Little and Mulgrew, and then the following season he brought in Darren Ward and Foley who’s turned out to be the best defensive signing he’s made, then Elokobi who has been missed.
This season he has brought in Shackell, Hill, Stearman and Friend, along with Mancienne on loan who galvanised the back flour for the time he was here. Now the most recent has been Berra who hasn’t yet looked like to be the answer. For the most part we do have some good defenders like Foley, Stearman and S Ward who has had good games as a makeshift left back but that’s the problem he should of really have just been a stop gap however Hill hasn’t inspired confidence that he’ll be any better than the Irishman. As a unit they haven’t been working since losing the Chelsea star in January, the back line on Saturday couldn’t handle the long throwing leading to the goal something like a flash back to Watford away last season when D Ward was ball watching. Who can organise that back four right now? I would have thought Craddock but he hasn’t done the job in the way Breen did despite the aging body.
Out the crop mentioned above have we replaced the characters of Breen & McNamara? Who could have helped with organisation is Berra the long term leader of the defence? People may look towards the midfield for not helping the defenders out with some protection, it’s not just tackling in the middle of the park, they are useless of keeping the ball, and I’ll bet we are near the top of the most giving procession away charts which is problem all over the pitch. McCarthy was a good defender in his day so how come this season we have the second worst defensive record in the top ten! And still be top of the League?
With what ever changes Mick might make I doubt that things would change especially with the confidence shot to pieces. I also should mention our goal keeper who I still think is fantastic talent has never quite been the rock since he was dropped after the Reading game at Molineux then again if wasn’t for Hennessey we could of concede more in certain games, perhaps something relates to Bobby Mimms leaving us at the start of the season? I would still be positive if our cutting edge was in good shape, however it doesn’t look good at the moment but I live in hope more than anything now.

If I may paraphrase
“how many times do we have to rely
on other teams keeping us at the top?
How many weeks can we rely on others
foir our bubble not to go pop”?
For God’s sake Wolvwes, get your act together.
Mr Scholari said many a time before he was sacked that any of his players are for sale. Surely when we had Michael Mancienne we were on a winning streak without letting in too many goals. Five million pounds would surely have secured him but if promotion is worth fifty million pounds then surely we should have even gone to ten million to secure his services and not break a winning team.
But then what do I know arart that we dropped three more points again?
Come on lads, you were the best, you stilll are. All you need is someone to keep telling you this and boost your confidence.
Cannot believe we have got away with our 3 point lead still intact. At this rate, we’re gonna be worrying about clubs other than Blues and Reading.
First half we just fell to pieces, our forwards were very much starved of service all game long because our midfield wasn’t getting much of a look in. Why have we got two wingers when we have got no ball-player like Jones to knock it out to them? Henry seems to be content just to be standing on the field week in week out and Edwards is full of energy but he supports the forwards more than he passes
The only positive for me was how threatening we looked when Iwelumo came on. He started bullying the defence and winning headers and we looked like could have won the game if it wasn’t for the brick wall of an army that Plymouth had placed in front of us.
Now MM has to drop his double standards and ditch Keogh and bring Big Chris back!
Mick has lost the plot. If he thinks Keogh is a footballer then i’m an astronaut. Been watching him for 2 years now and he is shocking. Also Kyel Reid showed nothing, while Berra is he worth 2.3m?
Why do we persist with humping the ball up to keogh who only won 2 headers all game. When Chris Iwelumo came on he straight away won his first 2 balls – 1 a pass to SEB and the other a cracking flick on to SEB. MM THEN SAYS HE DOESN’T know what is wrong, well ask 25000 fans?? Why did he not do his homework on Plymouth all big strong guys we needed the same from the start.
If results hadn’t gone our way recently then we would be staring down the barrel of Play-off humiliation. For pete’s sake get the selection and tactics right for Palace and Sheffield!!!

Hmmmm food for thought
There’s an Irish website called dangerhere.com, which has made currency from the countless problems of Irish commentators and footballers. The name comes from the predilection of RTE commentator George Hamilton for saying “oh, danger here!” whenever someone was close to the Irish goal. He did it at that moment in the 1990 World Cup when Gary Lineker scored against Ireland – appropriately enough it was Mick McCarthy who kicked Lineker into the net after he’d scored. The appearance of “oh, danger here!” and McCarthy in the same sentence isn’t an accident; Sunderland fans will appreciate it all very soon.
Since then, McCarthy’s career has been haunted by failure. Branded a congenital loser by Eamon Dunphy within weeks of succeeding his hero Big Jack, McCarthy was up against it. His teams failed to qualify for tournaments in successive play-offs against Belgium and Turkey, while some of Ireland’s good but old players felt the need to retire somewhat prematurely. Most famously Denis Irwin, then of the Manchester United side who were about to win the treble, was told to “prove himself” to the Ireland manager – who had made a success of his career as a player at Man City, Celtic, Lyonnais and Barnsley. Irwin baled a bit early, especially when you consider the absence of a quality left-back in the Irish squad.
The reputation Mick McCarthy enjoys in England compared with the one he enjoys in Ireland is illuminating. It’s all about to change too. Fawning English journalists loved the fact that McCarthy stood up to Roy Keane; adored his ability to dial their numbers when they left messages; and wondered at the jovial attitude he had towards life in contrast to his English counterparts.
Towards the Irish media, McCarthy was a tad different. His golfing buddies (some of the more senior Irish soccer journalists) wrote worriedly about a cabal of Sunday journalists who waged a campaign of personalized vindictive attacks on McCarthy. His other friends in the media wrote about the Sunderland job last time around as something which would teach the Irish public a lesson, about how we’d miss McCarthy when he was gone. The rest of us got short shrift at press conferences, gruff angry answers to legitimate tactical questions, and patronizing references to the fact that we weren’t middle-aged.
McCarthy joins Sunderland at what he would no doubt refer to as a “critically psychological moment” in the season (cf his first autobiography entitled without irony, Captain Fantastic). It’s most likely a “critically psychological” point in the club’s history: with some murmurings that the board are interested in getting a £50m securitization to “counter-act” their parlous financial state, the possibility of Sunderland careering headlong down the divisions is very real. Has no-one told them about Leeds United? And McCarthy is the man the Sunderland board have turned to.
In their wisdom, his defenders talk about Ireland’s world ranking when he left and how well Irish football was doing. They point at a small population and a ranking of 13 and draw the conclusion that Mick was a genius, and having to put up with that gouger from Cork is more than any man should have to deal with. But when McCarthy took over, Ireland were ranked in the top 15, then promptly fell almost 40 places while we (a) played with three at the back because it was popular; (b) pushed Keane to centre-back against Iceland, and; (c) made come-hither eyes at any mercenary who talked about Riverdance, Guinness or his granny.
Two failures later and four years on, Ireland finally began to play some football. Or rather Roy Keane and some of his better teammates did. By the time he left, McCarthy had presided over the team being booed at Lansdowne Road and defeats against a poor Russian team and mighty Switzerland.
McCarthy didn’t just fail to deal with Keane at the World Cup, he failed to deal with Keane at any point. This isn’t a situation that blew up in McCarthy’s face, rather it was one he was solely responsible for over the six years of his tenure. An examination of how Keane was treated doesn’t cover McCarthy in glory. He was told one thing before another happened; he had to watch McCarthy celebrate Ireland’s draw in Amsterdam when they were 2-0 up and wonder at the man’s ambition; he watched McCarthy pass the buck in Saipan when the training gear was late arriving; he watched the drinking sessions that Ireland international gatherings degenerated into and wondered about his own battle with booze. The story appeared that Keane didn’t want to do a piece for Niall Quinn’s testimonial programme, though few mentioned that a journalist who had exhorted Irish fans to boo Keane was involved in the production of it. In essence, he watched a pretty amateur organization degenerate as time went on, despite his efforts on the pitch to qualify for the World Cup.
Ireland’s best soccer player ended up going home from a World Cup he should and could have dominated. This will represent McCarthy’s biggest failure, although successive relegations with Sunderland could run it a close second. History will record that he chose the counsel of his No2 Taff Evans instead of the captain of Manchester United, and allowed a situation to develop where he tolerated the shoddy approach of the FAI to preparation.
And there are several instances of McCarthy’s biggest failing: his loyalty to certain players, which resulted in remarkable selection policies. Kevin Kilbane started every game in the World Cup 2002 programme. In the wake of possibly his worst season for Leeds United, Gary Kelly went out to represent Ireland in the World Cup while Steve Finnan, after a remarkable season for Fulham, was sidelined. Steven Reid, who came on in the second half of that game and displayed a level of brio that a moribund team could only hope for, wasn’t supposed to go to the World Cup. Instead Mark Kennedy, who has done a spot of baby-sitting for McCarthy from time to time, got the nod, despite not being fit. Thankfully the doctors over-ruled Mick the physician.
As a manager, McCarthy made a point of being mates with his older players and as a result he found it impossible to drop them. Jason McAteer started several more games than a player of his limited talents could have hoped for. He picked Kelly for that first World Cup game because he’d been “great off the pitch”. Did he make you laugh, Mick? Or was it because he rallied the troops to give you a round of applause when you sent Roy Keane home?
McCarthy will be an interesting study in how English football works. A manager with a questionable series of results at both international and club football, but who appears with alarming regularity on our television screens uttering bland aphorisms; one who has cultivated a good relationship with the media, tikka-tanned and tempted back to club management. It sounds a bit like Terry Venables. But Venables will look a shrewd appointment when it comes to compare records in the future.
For McCarthy, all criticism was personal, never professional. His World Cup Diary is full of pot-shots at every single journalist who ever slighted him – answering all the perceived criticisms of his team with various incomprehensible ideas and always talking about the team spirit he engendered. This involved allowing people to go to the pub and get excessively drunk as several members of the Irish squad on several occasions during the World Cup did. There was no mention of the story Tony Cascarino told about him cowering in the corridor of the airport hotel as Gary Breen’s mates and Roy Keane got involved in some handbags late one night.
Not a brave man when it comes to making decisions, he’s been equally frightened to offend the English media. They’ll stop with their Paddy routine now that he’s in charge at a Premiership club, and when the gloves come off we can picture him cowering again. Only this time it’ll be in the Nationwide League.

I for one will be making the trip to the hell hole in south london tomorrow. Lets just get behind the team and who knows what might happen. We have hit rock bottom and i fancy us to get 3 points.

I don’t think the blame should go to Mick, the blame should go to the players. Their performance on Saturday vs. Plymouth doesn’t warrant the top spot. Mick has formed a good squad over the years and has helped create a stable football club. We all know the players can do better Mick knows this but what happens during the 90 minutes on the pitch is all down to the players, so can everyone please lay off Mick McCarthy. If we don’t go up Mick should be allowed another chance at the club next season. At the beginning of the season I for one never expected us to get an automatic place, a playoff place at least. I will be the first to admit the wheels have fallen off, but the blame should not go to the manager it should go to the players, they were terrible on Saturday.

no125 all that glitters;you are a typical journalist or ex journalist, you just give one side to the story. No mention that he did actually win promotion with Sunderland and Ireland played well in that World Cup.He has failings right now all Wolves fans are well aware of that, but at this minute we sre still top of the league and he has signed some good players for us.Let us have some balance please, not just kick somebody when he is down.

muppet mick totally clueless,he says we where hopeless on sat,so what has he been watching for the last 3months?plays 2 wingers and no target man, the man a joke at moment the only way we get a win is if we sack him as most team get at least one or 2 wins when they change manager. may be the club should look at all the player we have let go and are now playing well for other teams but did not do it for us i.e clark at wednesdays will score on sat against us,we we are playing can see wining a game at moment.

Mick is stubborn and a bit old fashioned in his approach with regards to formations, tactics etc. If he does not get us up this season I would like to see Roberto Dimatteo, Owen Coyle or Roberto Martinez in. If he does get us up he deserves to stay and have 15 games in the prem and a summer of transfer money to spend. I think if we replace certain players we could survive the prem my ideas would be:
out:
Henry (replaced by Carsley)
Potter (replaced by larsson)
Ward (replaced by Olsson)
Collins (replaced by Gabbidon)
in:
Huddlestone
Eagles
De santos
Shawcross (if stoke relegated)

I don’t get chance to get to many matches, but this last one was one that I wish I had missed, abysmal from start to finish.
All of you out there slating Keogh, yes he was inefectual but so were a lot of others, Kightly hardly had a clue, first time I’d seen Berra, and if he is supposed to be our next best thing then I’m not impressed, Henry, everything seemed to go sideways or back. I don’t think that we made their goalkeeper make one worthwhile save, he’s probably never had an easier match.
I did think that Edwards had a ‘half’ decent game together with Foley.
It’s no good going on about how we should have had 2 penalties, the players should have made sure that we didn’t need to be shouting for penalties in the first place, by creating and putting chances away. Yes I know unfortunately there was very little in the creative department, and the one time we did get through our ‘striker’ didn’t even put there goalkeeper to the test, he blasted it over the bar.
I have to say that at this moment in time I hope we don’t go up, because the results will just be so embarrassing.
Can’t say that I fancy our chances in the next couple of matches either the way things are going. We could have had this div sewn up by now if they had taken advantage of the results that went their way.
Did anyone listen to the 606 phone in on the radio, there was a lady on there who said she was appalled at the way the wolves fans, got on their backs when things weren’t going right, well I think, if I’m paying £50 for a couple of tickets, petrol money to get to the match (and I have a fair distance to travel) and then purchasing drinks or whatever at the match then I think I have a right to have a go at them, wouldn’t any one of our bosses have a go at us if we didn’t do our jobs as we should??? and just to round my afternoon off, my radiator blew on the way home, so this game has cost me a whole lot more.

Well, what a SHOCKING, INEPT, PATHETIC performance. It was also GUTLESS, SPINELESS and a SHEER EMBARRASSMENT to behold.
So, why aren’t the “I back Mick to the bitter end” brigade out in force? Gone quiet, I see. Is that because, just for once, they actually ATTENDED the game to witness for themselves the utter drivel the rest of us have had to put up with for months?
I don’t belong to the “Happy Clapper Club” NOR the “Sack Mick Now!” fraternity -I like to take a balanced view of things. However, whether some of you people like it or not, the facts are these:
McCarthy’s endless, bizarre tinkering has finally caught up with us. Such madness had to, eventually.
*The players have lost confidence as a result. In fact, they’re UTTERLY SHOT.
*The fans (South Bank end, anyway!) backed ‘em to the absolute hilt, so there’s NO EXCUSES this time, Mick.
*We’re not in a “blip”; we’re in a friggin’ landslide. Those that can’t see it are either blind or stupid. How much clearer does it need to be? The patient aint sick, he’s looking terminal!
I still don’t think that changing bosses will achieve anything at this moment. Disruption is NOT what’s needed. Continuity IS. Besides, who’d want to end up with some lemon starting next season? Act in haste, repent at leisure.
The big question is, can Wolves AFFORD to go up in such a shambolic state? Which woulkd be worse: the very bitter pill of staying down or a soul-destroying season in the Premiership which would surely follow? Hand on heart, which scenario would set the club back the most?
Sorry, but looking at the shape we’re in, I’m beginning to wonder if it might be a blessing in disguise that we DON’T make it. And that truly hurts.

just an addition to my comment earlier,
can you imagine this side in the prem,
RONALDO VS STEPHEN WARD
VIDIC VS KEOGH
EVRA VS KIGHTLY
LAMPARD VS HENRY
EVERYONE VS CALAMTY WAYNE
THE ONLY 3 PLAYERS IN THIS SQUAD THAT COULD HACK THE PREM ARE FOLEY,SEB AND JARVO,
FULL STOP.
MICK HAS GOT TO GO, IWELUMO CAME ON SATURDAY AND WON EVERYTHING, AND RIPPED PLYMOUTH TO PIECES, KEOGH IS AS MUCH USE AS A PAPER MUG,
USELESS, YOUR GONNA LET US DOWN AGAIN ITS OBVIUOUS, AND WITH REGARDS TO MANCIENNE, chelsea wanted to sell him for 6 million, look at the facts, steven elliot, 1.5 million, shackell, 1 million, berra 2.5 million, eastwood 1.5 millions, surely we could of spent that money wisely on a player that could get us into the premiership.

All I can say is David Jones, Daniel Jones and even Gleeson must have been sat in the stands laughing their socks off on Saturday.
David Jones far superior to any of our other central midfielders. Daniel Jones is surely a better bet than Reid but keeps getting farmed out on loan and Gleeson would do a better job than Edwards. At least he can control and pass a ball to a teammate!
I find the constant inclusion of players such as Henry and Keogh in the side despite them not delivering the goods simply amazing. You would think we had no other players to select! The treatment of Vokes and Friend also frustrates me. Why has Vokes never been given a run in the side? Why was Friend not given a chance after his excellent display against Blouse in the cup?
It just seems that McCarthy selects players who run around a lot, expecially in midfield but have no class or guile and leaves out the one midfielder who does have class an guile. No wonder Mark Davies got out of town whilst he still could!

Time has come for wholesale changes give some of the younger guys a go what have we got to lose as the team MM has been picking since Christmas have obviously lost all form and confidence and maybe just maybe an injection of youth with their enthusiasm is what this team needs I’m not saying drop the whole first eleven but maybe three or four as our luck is running out fast and you would have thought by this stage we would have resurrected our season by now.

Just because MM has fell out with a player 20 odd thousand yes 20000 not 27/28k that used to come and watch, 20000 have to suffer. Early in the season our midfield had Dave Jones in it and he supplied the balls to kightley and jarvis to provide. Get your video’s out MM and look at it, here’s an idea look at the games we won and pick the same team obviously no mansienne so sign a decent defender in the transfer window OW I FORGOT IT’S TO LATE NOW ISN’T IT. CRAP PLAYER CRAP MANAGER. 20000 fans will soon be 15/16000 unless a change happens, plymouth was my kids first ever game I swapped my view from the north bank to the steve bull stand for the day, the kids where thoroughly bored and fidgeted throughout and i doubt they will want to go again and I don’t blame them. Surely MM cannot keep stubbornly ignoring Dave Jones – the man can pass the ball.Edwards couldn’t pass water !
I think letting Michael Gray go is a mistake we will rue, also. He is the type of individual we could do with in the side right now.

With regard to those who condemn some of the criticism on here, I am one of those who when I am at Molineux support the team to the hilt and always will. I will not boo any player of ours, whatever I may think about his performance because I know it will only make him worse. Living now on the South coast, perhaps it would be easier to forget my Wolverhampton past, my attendance at the famous matches of the fifties and so forth – it would perhaps ease the pain and the disappointment. But I can’t. Even when I am unable to drive/afford the long journey to Molineux, I will remain a dedicated Wolves fan. For now, I will take up the Early Bird again, pay who-knows-what for 300 miles worth of petrol plus extras and continue in hope. But, please, if I come on here and express profound disappointment – don’t hammer me for it. This is therapy for those of us who would otherwise bottle it up, kick the cat (which is innocent unlike others) or worse. At the end of the season there will be a post mortem whatever, but in the meantime surely we can be allowed to release some of our frustrations and fears over what is worse form than that of some of the relegation threatened teams. Keep the faith yes, but not blind faith.

We’re at the top of the championship.
So were baggies last season.
I think MM can get us there but he’s another Dave Jones.
Chelsea were fifth from the top of the premiership and that wasn’t good enough so they sack the manager and get another.
Seems to me that the board need to get their goals in order, not just promotion, but PL longevity. Lets not be just another rubber band team like baggies and blues, oh yes and Wolves.
We have the cash, we certainly have the supporters, best in the midlands, but do we have the vision?
I want my kids to take their kids to see the team in the champions league.

I am not a Keogh basher I’ll leave that to McCarthy he has totally destroyed this player by keep playing him whilst its obvious his confidence is shot to pieces. Can’t he see Keogh just doesn’t contribute anything to the team he needs to be taken out and see a shrink before its too late.
How much for Berra !!!! very very average player at least Stearman gives you an offense option unlike Berra who’s reminds me of a subutteo player.
McCarthy’s tatics hoof long high balls up to the two smallest forwards we have in the squad, great Mick no doubt it will be our fault as fans again, mend your realtionship with Dave Jones and stop being pig headed and play the man he’s our only hope.

Well most all of the things have been said and everyone cannot be wrong.Mick its time to show us you are a Premership Manager because on this performance you are not even a Championship Manager. What goes on behind the scenes is anyones guess – bu it must be a Dictatorial Managership if you leave your best palyer and the only creative midfield player out of the side. I’ve been saying for weeks when we play Keogh and Seb up front why do we just poke the ball up the middle – they never win any balls in the Air and it just comes straight back.Saturday was just the same but we had to wait until half way through the second half before Chris Iwolumo came on – he roughed their defence up a little – but it was all too late. If Manchester United would have been there on Saturday Ronaldo-Roone and their Mates could have declared at Half Time.
We are not premiership quality and if by some fluke we get there – would you trust Mick to buy any players ? His record this year needs some defending – because i can see us coming straight down with a heavy finacial burden and we’ll be in the same situation as Charlton – Southampton and others. No confidence No Plan 2 or 3 – Can someone please give us some positives. It’s no good blaming the supporters nearly 26,000 on Saturday were great – they got behaind the Team during the Match and Yes the Fans were quite right to Boo at the end of the Match – Just Totally not good enough – I would like to see how Mr morgan views the situation.

MICK McCarthy’s press conferences over the years have rarely been dull, but of late they’ve become unmissable. Last week, for example, he was asked by a valiant reporter if he thought Saturday’s home game for Wolves against relegation-threatened Plymouth would be easy.
“I’ll ask you a question,” he replied. “There’s a greyhound going through a field and he sees a rabbit. The rabbit gets up and starts running. The greyhound fancies a bit of snap, but the rabbit fancies his life. Who runs the hardest? The rabbit, absolutely! That’s been my view on life.”
And true enough, the rabbit outran the greyhound at Molineux, winning 1-0. “Let’s cut to the quick, we were hopeless,” he said.
As he put it before the game: “It’s an anagram isn’t it? If I get promoted I’m a god – and if we don’t I’m a dog.” His fate is in the paws of his sluggish greyhounds.

Anyone who went to the game on Saturday and wasn’t gutted by the result isn’t a supporter. I won’t pretend to know what they are. Those who come on here today and criticise the venom aimed at Mick are crazy. Never try to defend the indefensible! It’s true that a couple of wins will help soften the mood of a very frustrated group of supporters but we have to face facts. This club is run by fools. How many other chief executives would give the whole of the home end to their bitterest rivals in a derby match? How many normal people would put a giant screen in such a position in the ground that the sun obliterated the picture, how many other clubs would advertise a free one month trial for Wolves World with a full free showing of the Plymouth match as the incentive? It’ll be just Wolves then. My fervent hope was that Mick would go today and that we would recruit a manager to the end of the season to get us promoted. Those supporters who criticise the relists in the group should remember that telling the truth is not disloyal, it’s just the truth. Even if this clown gets us up does anyone think we have a hope in hell of staying up with keystone kops running the club. If anyone in my business had advertised something on a par with Saturday’s humiliation to my customers as a PROMOTION I would have chucked then into the street personally.

There isn’t a good team in the top six of the league. Not one of them can possibly get promoted and stay there. Wolves may make it, but they are as average as any of them.
A friend came up with a really good way to have the right teams in the premiership. The bottom three in the premiership play the top three in the championship league. Every team plays each other (or whatever)and the top three of the mini league would be the Premiership teams.
Come on look at Middlesbough having a problem in the premiership but kicked our butts. Just an enormous difference between the bottom of the premiership and the top of the championship.

Fact: Manager AND head coach says to their players just before going onto the pitch: “Watch out for the long throw in early doors, be alert to it” Result: Wolves 1 – 0 down in 38 seconds from a long throw in that no-one was capable of clearing! Truth is our boy’s on the pitch aren’t old enough or mature enough to handle the pressure..that’s not completely mick’s fault – we weren’t groaning when those same young guns blazed along with such carefree abandon earlier in the season and destroyed teams! – where mick failed is in not anticipating the need for solid quality (not Quashie!!) experience in January when it was clear that wolves were in such a great position and would have to start scrapping out results as the team to beat. It’s level heads and guidance that’s needed ON THE PITCH!!! If professional players cannot take heed of something told to them in the dressing room as they are about to leave that costs a goal so soon after, then something is badly wrong with their mental preparedness.I am now seriously worried that psychologically, the young wolves are so damaged by recent results that they are just a spent force this season! I fear they may fail to win another game at this rate!

YOSB agree with most of your points (yet again)
But with regards to Wolves going up and what would/ could happen if we did – As it stands; we would need at least 6 to 8 Prem quality players and look to “swoop” for the likes of Chris Eagles at Burnley – who I personally feel is far more consistant than our very own Kites – 10, 9, 8, 7 …… (waiting to get slated by MK fans ;-)
Also as far as if, perhaps, maybe MM has what it takes to cut it in the Prem – without a capable No 2 dont think he can cut it – with a decent No 2 – like Brian Kidd then he has a chance – someone that can clearly translate direct instructions and motivate the players to do and perform on the pitch (Kidd may not have been a decent manager BUT as a No 2 there are not many that are better)
Finally, If and when we are finally promoted – this will be the “acid test” to see if SM our silent benefactor actually puts his hand in his pocket and bank rolls some real quality Prem class players – Unless of course he waits until we are promoted and then unveils his dreamteam new manager and ast manager combo???
Here’s hoping for that pot of gold at the end of our promotion rainbow!
UP THE WOLVES!!! Even if its a bit wobbly at the moment!
