Walsall 2 Yeovil 0 – verdict

Saturday 28th February 2009, 4:54PM GMT.

WALSALL V YEOVIL 3 TS 28Walsall recorded their third concessive victory to keep their faint play-off hopes alive.

Troy Deeney’s eighth goal of the season put the Saddlers on their way to a deserved victory, after the striker prodded in eight minutes after the break.

Alex Nicholls sealed the victory when he ghosted in at the far post to head in Sofiene Zaaboub’s cross.

The win could have been more emphatic but Dwayne Mattis headed against the bar late on.

It was only the second time, and first since September, that Saddlers have won three consecutive games – but victory was marred by injury to Anthony Gerrard.

The centre-back was substituted early in the second half and Michael Ricketts dropped in to an unfamiliar defensive role.

The Saddlers were rarely troubled by Yeovil, as Manny Smith impressed again although Gerrard could now be a doubt for Tuesday’s trip to Scunthope United.

Deserved winners but a bit of a boring first half and when Gezza went off I was wandering who would play centre half alongside Manny and it turned out to be Ricketts I was worried. Incey was rarely troubled and the two best players scored the goals, I was delighted when Nicholls scored as he ran his socks off. When Nicholls plays well, Zaaboub doesn’t but 3 points are in the bag and 2 points from the next 2 away games and winnable games coming up then an exciting season is in progress.
