Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
O’Neill makes a meal of it

Villa’s offer of a dinner to disappointed supporters who travelled to Moscow to watch their team’s UEFA Cup exit has received a lukewarm reaction.
Many supporters felt short-changed at boss Martin O’Neill’s decision to field a weakened team.
Some fans splashed out around £1,000 for tickets and travel to the Russian capital only to see the team lose 2-0 in the second leg to go out of the competition 3-1 on aggregate.
O’Neill left eight first-team players at home for Thursday’s tie against CSKA in favour of resting this stars for the Premier League campaign, with a clash against Stoke looming.
The manager spoke with the 18 fans on the official trip back from Moscow and he and chairman Randy Lerner have decided to arrange the event for the end of the campaign, as a goodwill gesture at Villa Park with the 295 fans who went.
Lifelong Villa fan Steve Gough, 49, of Hazel Slade, Cannock, said: “At least they are making some gesture in some way at the way many people feel shortchanged.
“It’s good that they are recognising what the fans have done.
“But it’s not the best – how much is it costing them for a meal? £10 a head? Most fans have forked out anything from £600-£700 up to £1,000.”
John Knight, 48, from Great Barr, said: “I think there’s a bit of guilt there. It’s a gesture, but it doesn’t replace silverware.”

Alright, so it wasn’t a great result and now we’re out of the competition but it gives a massive boost to our chances of getting into the Champions League. Isn’t that worth more?
And if you’re gonna support your team, support them no matter what. Don’t moan that you’ve wasted your money – that’s your risk to take. If you don’t like it, don’t spend the money in the first place!

I said it in an earlier posting, we had to go the long way round to get that far, add league, FA cup and Carling cup games to that and its easy to see, with such a small squad it was a bridge too far.
Lets concentrate on getting into Europes automatic placings, then see us attract some big players.

I agree. I have never felt so positive about the Villa. What a fantastic club.

One Villa fan (Tubby) recently posted a comment that included the phrases – ‘O’Neil better watch out if we don’t get 4th’ & ‘This is the best season we’ve had in ages’ !!
He’s the reason for the good season.

I am 60 years young and supported villa through thick and thin, this will be my last as a season ticket holder as i never thought i would see the day when it is considered better to finish 4th in the league than win a cup competition. I always believed( perhaps old fashiondally)that you enter competitions to win not give up.. I have read the arguments that it will atract top players to the villa… get real… first Man united..Liverpool Chelsea Arsenal and Man city for money will be and have always been ahead of villa. Aston Villa have sold out to money i do not care what Martin Oneil says… it was to do with money the least villa could do for those fans is to refund the money not cheap meal!!
