Driver held on binman lorry death
Saturday 28th February 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
The driver of a refuse lorry which crushed a Cannock teenager to death has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Craig Reaney died when he was trapped under the lorry.
The 18-year-old, of Kelvin Drive, suffered multiple injuries in the incident at the junction of Oaktree Road and Waterside in Brereton on Thursday.
A 43-year-old man from Cannock was arrested and has been bailed until April.
Both men were employed by Verdant, which carries out kerbside recycling material collections for Cannock Chase Council. Collections will be a week late in parts of South Staffordshire following the accident.
People in Wombourne, Kinver, Stourton and Iverley have been told their recycling boxes will now be picked up next week.
Councillor Joan Williams, of South Staffordshire District Council, said: “Our thoughts are obviously with the family and colleagues of Craig Reaney at this very sad time. We would however like to reassure our residents that collections missed will be collected next weekend.”
Roger Edwards, managing director of Verdant, said: “The company, particularly staff at Cannock Chase, are devastated by the tragic news.” Anyone with queries about the collections should call 01902 696203.
