By St George they’ve got it
Saturday 28th February 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
A St George’s themed ale made by a historic Walsall brewery will hit the shelves at more than 80 Tesco stores next week in a major boost for the firm.
Staff at Highgate Brewery are celebrating after Davenports England’s Glory ale won over the top buyers at the supermarket. The beer, which is 4.3 per cent, is also Vegetarian Society approved.
England’s Glory will be on sale in over 80 Tesco stores across the Midlands as part of a Midlands Guest Ale programme, available from Monday.
Bob Norton, managing director at Highgate Brewery in Walsall, said “We are all delighted with the performance of England’s Glory. It is a real credit to the team that we have gained this contract, and supplying Tesco provides a great opportunity for beer drinkers across the Midlands to sample our award winning beers at great prices”.
It is not the first ale from the Walsall brewery which has impressed Tesco buyers. Highgate also supply Tesco with Davenports Original Bitter, first brewed in Birmingham in 1829, a 4 per cent session beer and Old Ember, a 6.5 per cent strong dark ale.
