Wolves blog: The Final Dozen

Friday 27th February 2009, 9:15AM GMT.

cardiff42Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd is busy working out exactly what will be needed to cross the finish line in the final 12 games of the season.

Calculators at the ready! It’s the final dozen games of the season and I think the only thing we can all expect is to expect the unexpected.

Many of you will have no doubt gone through the remaining fixture list and penciled in win, draw, win, win etc.  On paper, our run-in looks quite favourable, but the stumbling nature of our turn of year form means that we probably can’t predict points against any opposition at the moment.

Although you could argue that only two or three of the remaining 12 fixtures are against top-six clubs, most of the other teams we will be playing are still fighting for something, whether it be to get in to that top six or starve off relegation.

We currently sit with 64 points. Albion won last season’s Championship with 81 points. So, theoretically if we picked up half the points still available we would be home and dry. That would mean winning five, drawing three and losing four of the remaining fixtures to match Albion’s total.

The Baggies reached this point of the season with six points less than our current total to win the league from fourth spot.  Lets not look too closely at the fact that Bristol City had 65 points at this stage and finished fourth with 71 points, it will only make our nerves even more jangled than they already are!

Given the fact that no team is dominating this league, I would say that 81 points should be ample to finish top or perhaps if we aimed for second spot, we would need 79 points, which Stoke accumulated on the way to promotion from the last campaign.

I’m not going to list the 12 games and have a calculated guess where I think those points could and should be gained, I’ll let you have a pop at that below, should you wish.

On our current points gaining form, winning half the remaining games would appear a tall order. But for the first 20 minutes or so of Sunday’s game against Cardiff, the swagger, the quick penetrating passing, the goal threat and the pace had all returned to the Wolves game. It appeared the Spanish Siesta had done the trick.

But for some better finishing from a much improved Keogh, we should have probably been home and dry against Cardiff by the interval.

In the end we escaped with a fortuitous draw, thanks to the woeful basketball skills of Cardiff goalkeeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos. The point we gained could prove vital in our mission to escape to what seemingly is the only league the media ever talk about.

It was great to see 34-year-old Jody Craddock reinstalled into our defence. Despite Wolves conceding two goals, I don’t think he put a foot wrong. Worryingly, Karl Henry really has lost form at the moment and he lost the ball far too frequently on Sunday.

I really think we should gamble and play David Jones and David Edwards together in the middle for the run-in, or perhaps play Richard Stearman or Christophe Berra in a sweeper role.

Although perhaps a little controversial, I would also drop Michael Kightly to the bench and start with Kyel Reid. Kightly had a couple of mazy runs on Sunday, but was fairly ineffective for the majority of the game and hasn’t been in the best of form recently.

It’s immaterial really as, knowing manager Mick McCarthy as we all do, I don’t think he will change the starting line-up at all from the Cardiff game.

Every game we now play will seem like the most important fixture of the season.  If we have any aspirations of getting out of this godforsaken league, then a win on Saturday against a team who are dropping like a stone in Plymouth is an absolute must.

Signed for the Pilgrims by their former boss Ian Holloway, Sylvan Ebanks Blake will be the main threat to condemn the men in green to yet another defeat, as they slip nearer to the relegation zone and send Paul Sturrock nearer the job centre.

If, as expected, Plymouth come and play for a draw, we will need to be patient and play the kind of football we know that Wolves are more than capable of.

Three points and then a point away at Crystal Palace on Tuesday should set us up nicely for the remaining 10 fixtures.

I still think it will go right down to the last day of the season, with the likelihood that we will need to beat Doncaster at home and rely on some kind of permutation from the Reading and Birmingham game.

I can still vividly remember the now famous slump of 2002.  My brother and I had traveled up to Hillsborough with 7,000 other gold and black voices, to see if we could still salvage something from the nightmare end to that season.

Albion were at home to Palace and the scenario was simple, we needed to get a better result than the Baggies to clinch second spot in the league.  We took the lead in under a minute and then after 10 minutes there was a mumbling going round the crowd that Albion had gone behind.

It was of course complete nonsense.  Some shandy drinking moron had obviously thought it would be funny to get everybody’s hopes up.  We ended up drawing 2-2 with Wednesday, the Baggies beat Palace 2-0 to go up in second place and a flat Wolves teams were beaten by Norwich in the play-offs.

So, this time, because technology has moved on, I will be able to check the web for live scores whilst sitting in my seat in the Steve Bull Stand. Just in case that shandy drinking buffoon is in the vicinity and tries the same trick.

Lets hope that we are not relying on that final day of the season, that our form returns and we hammer every side we play from now until the end of the season.  Somehow I doubt it, but let’s roar the lads on, on Saturday to start the ball rolling.

I’m going for 2-0 with Ebanks-Blake and Edwards getting the goals. Have a bostin’ weekend, come on me babbies!

Because of that this year I have never been certain! I did have a great time at the play off final but dont want to go through that again! I think when were 3 – 0 up I still wasnt sure!

Lets stuff plymouth at the weekend and get a bitof confidence back! I think we may need slightly more than 81 points this year though.

Half time boo the players off the pitch and of course the same at the end just to make sure that the YOUNG players confidence is knocked that little bit more, I mean they should cope they earn thousands a week don’t they. Get real, get positive, start to believe and be that 12th player as this can make all the difference the season is in all of our hands not just the managers or players, cant we just leave all the negativity, season analysis until the end of the season, if we lose one of the games no booing cheer them on encourage them not matter what you will have all summer to moan and grown, to force MM out.

Dan Bath – I too remember the easter game against Man City that season. All talk prior to the game was that the winners would be the champions. I was in one of the boxes in the Billy Wright stand (for the first and last time) and Bully popped in before the game to chat. He said he’d had a bet on Butler to be first scorer against his childhood team – Butts was sent off and it all went the shape of a fruit from the pyrus tree.

Comment 2 I feel was being a tad “sarcastic” and aiming at “baiting” fans on here and guess what No 9 you bought into it – hook, line and sinker!

This is just another example of fans “sniping” at each other and mainly caused by the fact that the media and club (manager players and now occassionaly JM) will make comments in the E & S to further fuel fans to “have a go” at each other – BOTH parties being very gullable to do so

Can we not try to make our points without such “spitting venom” and why, oh why do we have to measure ourselves based on a “tit for tat” none-sense everytime we have a difference in opinion? NB* This is what makes all of us look and sound foolish to other clubs!

We ALL support and follow the same club – We ALL have our own valid opinions and this is a message board where we can air our points

I totally agree with your comments regarding Kites,he has been off the boil for a couple of months,,Stears has done nothing wrong, and should be in the side, but where did you get the much improved Keogh from,,watch him,he jumps to head a ball befor its near him,as soon as he gets the ball he turns to play it backwards,he gives the impression hes putting a shift in but in reality he does nothing, how many defence splitting passes have you seen from him,how many shots, how many goals,,please someone tell me how he warrants his place over,,Vokes,Big Chriss or Kyle Reed..I must be missing something, mind you as I said at the start of this Nathan a lot of you are willing to settle for second best.

We are in the box seat in that we have the points in the bag…that becomes MORE and MORE vital as time goes by!
Reading have stutteredand their Rugby pitch – shared by a Rugby team – wont help there usually crisp passing game…Blues are marginally better than us and Reading in recent points accumulation but they cant score goals and have many key players injured and not due back soon,Cardiff have a growing injury list,Swansea may just be coming to the end of their excellent run….ditto Bristol City.
Teams like Preston,Burnely,Sheff Utd,QPR are I feel just too far adrift to catch us.
The lower sides worry me,teams playing to stay up often find a bit more than those trying to get up,its a different kind of tension,TOMORROW is vital – whatever Reading do we can go 6 points clear of Blues – who have a very difficult away game at Sheff Utd minus about a dozen of their better players…

Whilst I agree with the general sentiment, I think it’s pointless trying to base this year’s points target on what happened last year – different teams, different line-ups.

I agree with others on here – one game at a time, a fully committed team and supporters cheering them on. Let’s hope the ‘new season’ suggested by MM last week continues as the start of the season-proper did – one draw followed by 7 wins…

Bang on. I was going to make the same point. So instead, here’s another:
Take a good look at what happens to clubs that are relegated from the Prem. Basically, if they don’t get promoted again before the parachute payments run out, they nose-dive.
In ’04 we got relegated with Leeds and Leicester. Check where they are now. In ’05, Palace, Norwich and Saints got relegated. Have a quick peek at the table, and see where they are. In ’06, it was Brum, the Tescos and Sunderland – but they all got promoted before the parachute ran out. The relegated of ’07 are still on parachutes, but check where Watford and Charlton are already.
So. We were disloyal to DJ, then we wasted the parachute money with a clown (Hoddle) who thought he was bigger than the club.
In ’07 most of us expected the worst. Instead, McCarthy built a new team from scratch, with little investment, and on comparatively low salaries. He gave us a couple of decent seasons, and now we’re top with just a quarter of the season to go.
You don’t have to like the man’s opinions or how he talks. You don’t have to like his players or his tactics. But the fact is, he’s done a great job so far.
I think we’ll go up. But if we don’t, so what ?
Even if this is a re-run of 2002, look where a bit of loyalty took us in 2003.

Trouble is, you can imagine that there will be a section of fans who would get on his back and he wouldn’t be given the chance.

We would also have to trust that he could replace the players that we would probably lose in SEB, Kites and Foley. But, lets hope it doesn’t come to that and that we can laugh in the face of the 2002 slump!

Get a reality check! Surely you don’t think we will get 30 out of the last 36 points available?

1 win in 10 wouldn’t suggest we are going to romp home would it? I’ll be more than happy to eat a huge slice of humble pie if we get 29 points from 12 games. I would probably say it will be 15 to 20 points.

52 why were they “signing”, are they deaf?

It seems that some people on here use the term “happy clapper” as a form of abuse for someone who doesn’t agree with their own anger-fuelled rants which are directed at MM, Moxey or fans who get behind the team.
They know deep down that this anger and frustration is caused by a sense of inadequacy and frustration at their lack of achievement in life but it makes them feel better to take it out on something else.
We should feel sympathy for them rather than deride them on here.
Imagine going through every day feeling that internal rage and torment, unable to enjoy anything like supporting your team.
I am glad that I can appreciate the success so far this season and look forward how we will feel when we go up.

Predicting any Wolves team not to concede a goal – even against the poorer teams – is great folly. I hope we win and we should but it’s not going to be a cricket score and they will probably get at least one.

I’m looking forward to seeing the lads at Palace – not so far to travel – and we tend to do ok there. In Mick we trust but how I wish we could see the team that was so powerful last year. Chris was great – surely he can be great again????

I too was in the south bank at half time on sunday and it was a bit mental. You would have thought we had just won promotion in th 90th minute of the last game of the season. It was good to see people enjoying themselves singing and dancing and generaly happy that we are in the best position we have been in for years. Every game from now until the end of the season should be enjoyed by all, i remember too many times at this stage of the season when all we had is an outside chance of the play offs. Go to the games, support the team and ffs enjoy it!!!!
TOP OF THE LEAGUE WERE HAVING A LAUGH!!!!!!

There’s always going to be negative comments from the grumps, the kind that make it seem they actually want us to fail simply so they can say ‘I told you so’. If that’s their personal opinion of what a fan is then who am I to judge.. My idea is supporting the lads unconditionally no matter whether it’s Keogh or SEB, Collins or Kightly, anyone in the gold and black gets my support.
12 games left and we have by far the easiest run compared to blues and reading, who are also in shocking form, how long it will last is irrelevant because concentrating on our own matches, supporting the team and eachother, winning the point.. and we don’t have to worry about how well anybody else does.
regardless of our form for the last couple of months i’m still confident in our promotion, and I still feel we are in the best place possible for the point in the season we are at, we have the points – not the games in hand.. We could never expect to keep a 7 or 8 point gap throughout, especially not with the way Reading were also playing.
Automatic promotion and the title are still well and truly in our grasp, we can and will do it. And I for one couldn’t give a toss what the stripey lot or any negative idiot relying on failure for their own smugness thinks.
I’m going for 2-0 Wolves today.
    Come on lads!

You all ready to revise your arithmetic now your first 3 points have gone to Plymouth?
Doubtless you can all cry yourselves to sleep and dream of MM, Moxwy and Morgan coming to read you another bedtime story about promotion 2009/2010!

nathan-You do your Best to explain the IDEOLOGY at the Wolves.
Okay thats your job but please in your next Blogg expain some Logic taking into account our very poor showing on Saturday before a big pro team crowd well at least at the start of the game–
How does MM asses his tactics-
We have a strong pair of Wingers-Why does he dimminish their effect by chopping and changing.
Where is Jones-Surley the best passer of the ball we have in the midfield.
Why does he not give Vokes a long run.
Why does he buy players never use them , never gives them a chance and Why does he keep players on the field who cannot head or pass the ball with accuracy.
I am totaly frustrated with what we are being served up at the moment and it appears MM takes no real notice of what we think.

With the Shackell debarcle and others I for one wonder if anybody on the coaching staff knows what is going on.

I will to-day pray hard that our luck changes but I have no my faith in Mad Mich .

-He will probably take us up I AM KEEPING THE FAITH but he does not have the knowledge to keep us there.

If we get promoted,I’ll watch Wolves In the Premiership, If, we don’t I’ll watch them in the championship. I MM is the manager I’ll watch wolves, if he’s replaced I’ll watch wolves. They are my team by choice, it was my choice and I am happy with it. I am not a moaner, nor a happy clapper, I can be both I am a supporter…. it dosent matter to me in what league we play as long as I see a Team giving 100% for the Wolves. Or maybe i’m just preparing myself for another disapointment…..
