Road to shut for two years
Friday 27th February 2009, 4:45PM GMT.
A main road that links with one of the Black Country’s busiest junctions will be closed for two years so major improvements can take place.
Tividale Road, leading to Burnt Tree Island, may close from May until May 2011 as the island is replaced with traffic lights in a £10 million scheme.
Sandwell and Dudley Councils were given the go-ahead to proceed by the Department of Transport last year. Results of a funding bid are expected within months.
Sandwell transport chief, Councillor Bob Badham, said they would work with Dudley Council to try to minimise problems as much as possible but it had to be accepted there would be extra pressure on roads as improvements are done.
Work at Tividale Road will see the road diverted on to a new set of signals on the Birmingham New Road. The Birmingham New Road will then form part of the new signal controlled crossroads also linking with Burnt Tree and Birmingham Road.
Better pedestrian access and cycle lanes are planned.
Tividale Road will close from its approach to Burnt Tree Island up to Hill Road.
There will be access to homes and shops as far as Bradley Street. At the junction with Hill Road a barrier will close the road.
Diversions will be down Dudley Road West, up Hill Road and on to Birmingham New Road to get back on to Burnt Tree Island.

Good old Sandwell council

Burnt Tree Island needs an underpass for the Birmingham New Road, for straight through traffic to and from Birmingham not yet more lights

Its a bad island but 10 million pounds?????
What a waste of money!

I live in this area and use this route to get to work. The lights at the top of Hill road let out about 6 cars at a time. This will cause gridlock on a bibical scale. This will be a road going version of The Public.

It’s about time something was done about it.

Lovely job ! To create better traffic jams.
Just remember £10million was what was needed to save Brierley Hill baths. When there was not a ”crisis”.Suddenly when there is one officially our two favourite councils have money !
The fun is going to start when petrol starts running out and the West Midlands has not-we all know the red tape-invested enough in alternative means of transport.
Tell that one as a bed-time tale to the kids today.I already feel sorry for them.

Burnt Tree island is a horrible junction especially at rush hour. Whether sticking traffic lights on it is a good thing remains to be seen if Castle Gate was anything to go by.
Bearing in mind traffic is almost solid most rush hour mornings from Burnt Tree back towards Regent Road (or back as far as Trafalgar Road on occasion) with Burnt Tree as it is now, one closed arm means the New Birmingham Road, as clogged as it is now, isn’t going to cope.

How come it’s going to take two years to do?
I bet they could do the work in under a year if they really tried.
Not looking forward to the tailbacks in Hill Road atall thank you.
