No favours from the Saddlers

Friday 27th February 2009, 2:50PM GMT.

2626919Walsall boss Chris Hutchings has warned rookie Yeovil boss Terry Skiverton to expect no favours from his side.

The Glovers visit the Banks’s Stadium for only Skiverton’s third game as a manager, after he took over from Russell Slade earlier this month.

Skiverton has yet to win after a defeat and a draw and Hutchings has told his opposite number he won’t get any favours.

He said: “He’ll be hoping he does well and we’ll be wishing him all the best, but it’s dog eat dog and that’s as far as it goes.

A win would further boost confidence at the club and stretch their unbeaten run to five games – equalling their best sequence this season – and Hutchings has urged his side to give fans something to shout about.

He said: “It’s a two-way thing. Obviously we want the fans behind us, and they do get behind us, but we’ve got to give them something to shout about, we can’t expect it all one way.

“It helps when you win games and get points on the board and that’s the most important thing. We all know that times are hard but we’ve got to make sure we keep winning.

“If we do then hopefully we’ll get a few more people back through the door.”

Hutchings again reiterated the importance of not letting previous results go to waste.

He said: “We’re on a nice little run but it counts for nothing. It’s in the past and we’ve got to make sure we get three points on Saturday.

“If we don’t get three points on Saturday we’ll have to start again. We have to make sure we are focused and, if we can play to the potential we’ve shown, then I feel we’re in with a chance of beating anyone in this league.”

They will have to win without Sam Williams, who has returned to Villa after his loan spell was cut short by a hip injury and crocked defenders Rhys Weston and Stephen Roberts.

Weston is recovering well from his calf injury but Roberts is making “slow progress” from his back injury according to Hutchings.

Even without the duo, the Saddlers have recorded back-to-back clean sheets but he is wary of the Glovers’ threat, although admitted they are as inconsistent as anyone.

He said: “Consistency levels are up and down at a lot of clubs, unless you’re in the top five or six and even then they are bemoaning they could be more consistent.

“Yeovil went to Scunthorpe and won but they got beaten at Crewe. Hereford beat Leeds which is another example, so there are no easy games.

“You just have to focus on the next one.”
