A suspect being held on suspicion of the murder of a Wolverhampton man has been released without charge, as detectives today revealed they were no longer treating the death as suspicious.

Steve Adams, aged 54, died at New Cross Hospital hours shortly after receiving serious head injuries in an incident near his home in Wood End Road, Wednesfield, on Monday night.

A 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder was yesterday released without charge.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Catherine Preece said: “We’re not looking for anyone else in connection with the death and it is no longer being treated as a murder inquiry.

Mr Adams, who was unemployed, had spent time working at Hawks Bar – now B4 – in Bilston and had also had jobs as an auto polisher.

He had been married to his wife Chris for almost 17 years and is said to have treated stepsons Darren and Jason as his own.

His stepson Darren described him as “the best dad in the world”.

Darren, a 28-year-old sales assistant, added: “He loved his music, his family and his two dogs called DJ and Candy. This has come as a terrible shock to us all, especially my mum but she is being brave.”
