Hennessey hopes for luck

Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey believes Wolves’ performance – and luck – against Cardiff could have changed their luck for good this season.
Debutant loan keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos’ howler, when he fumbled Kyel Reid’s cross over the line, gifted Wolves an unlikely equaliser in last Sunday’s 2-2 draw.
Now Hennessey reckons that could be the catalyst that helps the Championship leaders regain their form, starting with the home clash against Plymouth.
He said: “I think we all played well against Cardiff, it was a good team performance. We conceded the goals and a bit of luck went against us, but hopefully with what happened with our equaliser, the luck has changed now.
“Hopefully we can go on from there now and pick up three points against Plymouth. I think we’re on something like the second worst run in the league (one win in 10) apart from Plymouth, but I’m sure if we keep playing well, it will come for us.
“We all just need to get back to winning form and hopefully Plymouth will be the start of it, but we know it’s going to be a tough game.”
Hennessey insists he’s doing nothing different to last season, as Wolves strive for a rare clean sheet against the Pilgrims.
Wolves have failed to keep a clean sheet in 10 games during which time they have won just once, when Hennessey kept Mick McCarthy’s side in the game with a world class save before they beat Watford 3-1.
Despite Wolves having scored more goals (66) and boasting a better goal difference (21) than anyone else in the Championship, just three teams – Burnley, Blackpool and Watford – have a worse defensive record than McCarthy’s side outside the bottom four.
As follows with such a record, Hennessey has kept just four of Wolves’ total of seven clean sheets.
The goals conceded column contrasts sharply with last season when Hennessey kept 19 clean sheets and Wolves had the Championship’s second best defensive record. Hennessey admits keeping the goals out has been difficult.
He said: “At the moment it just seems hard for us to keep a clean sheet. We’ve been playing reasonably well at the back, but it’s just not happened for us and teams have certainly been punishing us.
“We’ve been playing well but we could do with a couple of clean sheets. You wonder what you can do to keep a clean sheet, but you just have to keep ticking over and keep your preparation right.
“It’s just a case of doing your best and continuing to do things right off the pitch. Personally I’ve not been doing anything different to last season, when I kept the 19 clean sheets.
“We’ve got to cope with that, play our normal game and hopefully we’ll beat Plymouth and start another run.”
