Watch out, ducklings about!
Thursday 26th February 2009, 6:00PM GMT.
A scheme is under way to protect the waterfowl at a popular West Midlands beauty spot.
Duckling Watch has been launched to deter potential vandalism of nests and the destruction of eggs at the popular Witton Lakes in Birmingham.
Organisers are now appealing for more volunteers.
Backed by members of Birmingham City Council’s parks and nature conservation team, the volunteers are patrolling the park at various times each day between now and September.
Their role is to monitor the nests, reporting any incidents of vandalism. Duckling Watch is the brainchild of Linda Hines MBE, director of the Witton Lodge Community Association.
She said: “This is a non-confrontational role, we’re just looking for people willing to give up a bit of spare time to keep an eye on the birds and their nests.
“We’ve got cameras and binoculars and any incidents are to be reported to the watch leader, who will then take it further.”
Birmingham City Council leisure, sport and culture chief Councillor Ray Hassall, added: “The organisers of this scheme should be applauded for their willingness to give up spare time for such a worthy cause.
“Our park rangers and keepers obviously play a major role in safeguarding green spaces across the city but, as ever, it is great to see members of the public showing concern for their environment.”
