Stafford assistant manager Darren Read agrees that there is still plenty of breathing space between his side and the relegation places – for now.

All of the teams in and around the drop zone of the Blue Square North have failed to take advantage of Rangers’ tumble at Hinckley on Monday night, with the bottom three all losing, while Vauxhall Motors and Solihull Moors ground out a point against each other.

As it stands, the Marston Road men still have an 11-point buffer between themselves and the relegation places, with an opportunity to stretch that advantage further at third-from-bottom Burscough on Saturday.

The fate of the club very much remains in their own hands and Read knows the likes of Andy Mutch’s side would trade places with them in a heartbeat.

The Rangers No 2 said: “You look at the league and there is still plenty of points between us and the relegation places. Our focus now and in the coming games should be on maintaining that buffer. Each round of games that passes, we get closer to the end of the season.

“Teams have games in hand around us, but is only really Blyth Spartans who have a lot over us. They may have those four games in hand, but they have got to win three of all four of them to be a significant threat to us.

“We cannot worry about that or any other team – our concern is ourselves.”
