Jobs threatened at Carphone Warehouse
Thursday 26th February 2009, 11:45AM GMT.
Hundreds of jobs at a Black Country phone repair centre are at risk after Carphone Warehouse bosses looking to make savings announced plans to cut 450 jobs nationwide.
Repairs and logistics workers at the Wednesbury base are among the head office and support centre jobs “at risk” of redundancy.
But the company has stressed that those working inside the stores of the retail chain and TalkTalk broadband operator are safe – and none of its outlets will close.
Consultation has already began with staff at the Wednesbury centre which is based in Bilston Road, as well as its North Acton headquarters in west London and its call centres in Preston and Warrington.
It is hoped that many of the 450 roles will be redeployed to other areas of the business. A spokesman for the company said the cuts are part of a review of the business.
He said: “We announced in January that we would be undertaking a review of the business and aiming to make savings across the business.
“As part of that, 450 roles will be placed at risk.”
The proposed job cuts come amid other cost reductions for the group, including an energy saving drive and the cancellation of its annual party.

Couldn’t these people be offered alternative employment within the company, i.e. developing and maintaining broadband services? They’re obviously good with their hands, and have some knowledge of communications technology.
