McCarthy has no room for snipers

Wednesday 25th February 2009, 11:29AM GMT.

WOLVES V CARDIFF 19 EB 22Mick McCarthy insists Wolves’ players have the temperament for automatic promotion – after booting out the “barrack-room lawyers” in the dressing room.

Fans are curious why £1m summer signing Dave Jones has slipped down the reckoning as the Championship leaders have won just one of their last 10 games.

Jones has started just three of the last 13 league matches, during which time Nigel Quashie has made his fight for his place even harder. But boss McCarthy insists Jones has done nothing wrong and has shown an excellent reaction to the axe.

“Sometimes maybe they haven’t done anything wrong, but sometimes I just want to put in a different player for whatever reason,” said McCarthy. “Nobody likes it, but they have to accept it and get on with it.

“His response has been top class. The lads are fabulous. If they get left out of the side, I never have a negative response, or any sulks from any of them.

“I don’t have any barrack-room lawyers chirping away in the background. Those have gone from this club.

“It’s easy to be the best player when you’re not in the team. Players say “I’m fantastic, I should be in!” You put them in and they are awful – they can’t hack it. But there are none of them here now.

“I’ve just made the decision to change it – right or wrong. They’ve got to get on with it because no player has a divine right to be in the team all the time.”

McCarthy mentioned no names, but he has got rid of Freddy Eastwood and Jay Bothroyd since the summer, both of whom felt they warranted a run in the team last season.

EVERY thread on the E & S message board no matter how different has the same theme running through it!

SO called Happy Clappers Vs Non Happy Clappers

NB* The only thing this achieves is the fans fighting amongst themselves with pathetic name calling the common outcome

NB* IF the manager, staff and players are as spineless to listen to a small minority on message boards, a small minority at games with ironic cheers and some booing – What does that say about these people?

    Are they MEN or MICE?

Using the fans as a reason for poor performance and results is the oldest excuse in the book and very easy to do – Personally, If the players were busy doing the business – Would they care about isolated comments?

My advice to you my friends is dont be so gullable – MOST Wolves fans (the large majority that is) do the right thing by the club and have done so for years!

NB* The manager, staff, players and club OWE it to us fans to do and give their very best EVERY game/ time they put on a shirt

I would ask them to stop hiding behind excuses/ spin that causes this rift between loyal fans and start to act in a manner that is fitting for the shirt they represent!

Yes We are Top at the moment BUT – IF we play the same way for another 9 games it may well be too late by then!

Here’s hoping a “change” is soon gonna come!

I hope Jones gets a run out soon, but not at the expense of Edwards. Big Chris should be due a start again soon.I also hope to see a left back playing in a left back position. But that is just my opinion on a message board.

I agree with everything he says, except that the only left-back good enough has been out for the season. In this situation, I think Stephen Ward has proved himself (if not ideal) the best option and a first-class team player.

I was at Swansea when we started with Friend at LB and Wardy on the wing. After 10 min of Friend looking out of his depth, he switched with Ward who went on to have a fine match.

IF these spineless players, staff and manager want an “easy life” – Dont lets us stop you – Go play in the lower leagues or abroad

Dont kid yourselves that you are gonna be good in the Prem or even in the Championship

    8. Sensible comments so far (1 to 7)…I’m sure Southbank BA’s lurking somewhere.

Dave Edwards had a dynamic game on Sunday (didn’t he make KH look pedestrian?). I think he and Jones have got enough about them to play together successfully. Maybe Mick feels the opposition will run through us…I don’t. The opposition won’t have possession of the ball as much for a start. I could see us keeping the ball and moving it on in a slick way, opening sides up. And if they double up on our wingers…we’ll go straight through the middle of em.

Plus, we also badly miss Jones’ quality from set pieces.

Jody Craddock has never let Wolves down and won’t do whether he has a contract or not, because he’s a good honest pro.

I believe Ward has had an great season, and wish we had a few more like him “in the squad”. I also believe though that he is being targeted by the opposition as the week link, and believe his is ready for a short spell on the bench and then bought on as a winger when Jarvis tires like he usually does.

I agree with The Usual Suspects in questioning whether we have MEN or MICE at this club. We keep being reminded that they’re a young team, but this is a tough world, and we can’t afford namby pambies. If they’re “man” enough to play for Wolves, pick up their fat salaries, drive fancy cars and be generally pampered by the club, then fans -their paymasters, don’t forget- have every right to express their views.

The Usual Suspects also mirrors my view in that the players and management have a ready-made, convenient ‘excuse’ where the fans are concerned. Blaming the fans for the club’s woeful record of failure for the past 25 years has become the norm, it seems. Certainly, McCarthy’s arrogance and outspoken comments since he arrived -though understandable to a degree, in fairness- are imflammatory and hardly cohesive despite his assertion that “we all need to pull together”. Your words and actions are contradictory in the extreme, Mick. All you’ve achieved is to divide the fanbase even further. Still, that’s to be expected from a man who sees himself as the first Molineux manager to be fireproof.

I wish I’d had the good fortune and ability to play for Wolves -we all would. Pulling on that Gold shirt is an honour that should not be taken lightly. Maybe seeing Bully wear it with such distinction (and many other greats before him) spoilt me because now I expect all that follow to emulate his lead. That man NEVER knew a lost cause, NEVER accepted defeat and NEVER gave less than 100%. He never made excuses, either. He earned his money -all that I demand is that our present lot do the same. That’s not a lot to ask but, if they’re not up to it, make way for those who are. Players are merely tools to do a job and selfishly mercenary in nature, so let’s not get TOO protective of the little dears. They’re employees, not demigods.

As far as I am concerned it is quite simple in midfield as a holding player it is either Quashie or Henry never both.
Anyway onto the positives. I listened to the Blues game last night and they had 3 gilt edged chances but without Phillips they cannot finish. Not good at a very tough venue like Brammall Lane on Sunday. As for us, Palace were very poor and their best player Moses was taken off with a hamstring problem and Carle – ex Bristol City – was sent off. As bad as we have played recently, I can only see 2 wins from Plymouth and Palace. They are both in freefall and do not boast great players.
Let’s get behind the boys as we are well capable of opening up a decisive gap from the Blues.

The difference is that the team has been somewhat improved since Keogh arrived but he has not improved with it and would be better to play at league one level, where he will not be out of his depth.

Cardiff bossed the second half on Sunday because they played three in midfield against our two. So when our wingers are isolated and we lose the ball, their spare runners bomb right through the big gaps in front of our defence. Thats not Henrys fault but down to MM`s tactics.

Why play with two wingers to put crosses in when you play two short strikers against two big defenders. Keogh never won a header anywhere on the pitch, let alone where it hurts the opposition. Last season Keogh failed as a goal scorerer, (same this year it appears) and we signed Kyle to add height, & variation in attack. We have a 13 goal 6ft centre forward signed in the summer who can`t get a game – why.
And what are the short, or medium term strategies for when we get promoted.
We clearly won`t score so many goals against premiership defences, and we`ll conceed far more than this season, so the way we currently play is a recipe for disaster.

Any true supporter should be asking these questions, not sitting on their hands as our winless run goes on & on.

But deep down, I know the Might Mick will still be here long after I am pushing up daisies.

    The reason is simple.
He is doing, and has always done, exactly as our esteemed Directors have instructed him.
Namely, put together a competitive team at this level on a SHOESTRING BUDGET.
As long as he continues so to do he is bombproof.

Kightley had what we have come to expect from him these days, a quiet game, so you bring on the young West Ham lad who looks like a flyer, the Cardiff goalkeeper Dropaloadofthis gifts us a point. Why not move Jarvis or the sub over to play against that non-tryer Kennedy at left back for Cardiff? We might have gone for the win had we maintained the tempo of the first half an hour. We were stopped in our tracks by the decision of Dave Jones to play an extra midfielder after he witnessed the Wolves fine start. Our response? we played on in the same way and things only changed when Vokes appeared to “mix it up” in the box.Come on Mick you have tampered with a side sweeping all before them in a “for whatever reason” excuse, get back to the winning formula before dejavu and the Baggy 11 point claw back strikes again.

You may wanna watch the boring stuff we put together under Hoddle, when for the 1st time in 20 years i nearly gave up my seat through boredom.
Admitedly we are struggling somewhat at the moment, But i believe we will do it.
I for 1 will be happy clapping Saturday pm, and until its the impossible dream, i will continue to do my bit for the young lads and encourage them to reach the heights they did pre christmas. To quote the stripey lot “we did it before and we can do it again”

Everyone is fans each has a different perspective some more optimistic or pesimistic others can’t see any wrong others can’t see any right. I like to try and deal with facts and i have 3. 1. How can AK be kept in the team when we won nearly all our games this season without him and his goal ratio to minutes on the pitch. 2. Berra for me is a massive gamble based on the fact he played 8 real competitive games each season, was he really worth that money and is he that much better than Stears or Jody not in my opinion. The money should have been spent on a quality central midfielder who can help us retain possesion any defence who ever they are, are going to work overtime if we keep giving the ball away or point 1 when we are on top we don’t put the match out of sight.3. What does it show of the clubs ambitions that in jan we only signed a 19yr old who can’t get in the first team and a guy who was rejected by one of our nearest rivals. Shouldn’t we have sent a message and spent some of the 30 million the club was given or supposed to have been given on some real quality. fact is my workings suggest that outgoings are about the same as incommings, also long contracts given to players like Collins was that really neccessary? THESE MY FREINDS ARE THE FACTS

“No players have a devine right to be in the team” except Captain Henry, start with Jones and Edwards, strange that our poor run as been at the same time that Jones as been mainly absent, he was also left out when we lost 5 to Norwich, and was substituted just after half time when we lost to QPR. Worst part about it was Mick tinkered before we had the bad run, it’s Mick’s tinkering that has caused it. The saying “Keep Your Head When All Around are Losing Theirs”, I wonder if Mick can.

Remember when MM first arrived at the club. He brought with him Breen. Reason? Quote ” I like to see some familiar faces” So he brings in a player not because he is any good but because he is familiar. Then we have the favorites who probably nod in agreement with everything he says so they play every week whether they are good, bad or indifferent. That explains the reason why other players are left out or sold – they dare to question the Almighty.

Other contributors are spot on when they say we will do an Albion if we go up. The happy clappers refuse to look the facts in the face. We are not yet a Premiership side. All the bon homi will disappear as fast as we slide down the table. Remember the last time we were in the Premiership. Mark Laurenson on the BBC when asked when Wolves kick off. He said “about every 15 minutes” Do we really want embarrassing remarks like that again?

    1. The Usual Suspects…Hear, hear, mate.

As I said on another topic on this site, the readymade excuses are being stockpiled for if things go t*ts-up.

Our fans have endured 25 years of unmitigated failure, yet there’s been a common theme consistently running, especially since Mick arrived: it’s the fans fault.

Our fault for having a perfectly justifiable opinion and expressing it.

Our fault for having the temerity to question those that our admission fees and season tickets help keep in a life of luxury.

Our fault for the endless stream of “last payday-seekers” that have streamed through the doors of Molineux.

Our fault for the broken promises of hallowed Sir Jack Hayward who promised ‘to do a Birmingham’ upon our promotion, but instead ‘did a Rochdale’.

Our fault for expecting success from a club that sees itself as a sleeping giant of the game, yet, when things go wrong, we’re reminded that we’re merely a Championship club.

Our fault that ‘Puts A Shift In’ Keogh tells us he’s going to bang home 20 goals this season, yet goes on to score a paltry 3 with only a 1/4 of the season to go.

Our fault that Mad Mick hasn’t addressed our defensive woes and has utilised SIXTEEN different back-four combinations already this season.

Our fault that Mick describes fans as ‘numpties’ and ‘nuggets’ just because he thinks he’s fireproof and is above criticism.

Our fault that Molineux was built so far away from the pitch that generating a hostile environment for visitors is a feat in itself, consequently, it’s our fault when they lose such home advantage.

So, Mad Mick has no room for snipers, doesn’t he? That’s rich coming from a manager who’s only too willing to shoot the very lifeblood of our great club in the back…

    THE FANS.

Those unnecessary changes, maltawolves, hopefully WON’T derail our promotion hopes. We were doing fine until MM began his ridiculous tinkering at Blackpool.

Should we go up, in some ways it will be in spite of McCarthy, not because of. Hard to get your head around, but true, I feel. Only a complete fool fixes something that aint broke, but Mick still had to meddle.

McCarthy left himself wide open with some daft comments in the above article, as Mattywolf (post 9) clearly exposed. The one I liked best was Mick’s:

” They’ve got to get on with it because no player has a divine right to be in the team all the time.” Yeah, pull the other one, Mick. At various times, you’ve ass-kissed Keogh, Collins and Ward (or was it the other way around?). Fair play to Wardy, though: he’s done quite well considering.

Meanwhile, poor old Chris Iwelumo got the bullet AND a public slating from Mick, as other fans have already pointed out on this site.

Sorry, but I’ve got no choice but to agree with fellow posaters who insist McCarthy is surrounding himself with ‘yes men’. You can’t draw any other conclusion.

I’m all for team solidarity, mutual respect and ‘bonding’…but Wolves is turning into an ‘exclusive’ club where REAL men (Ince, Mike Bailey, Alex Rae etc) would never fit in.

Keep collecting those delicate Cup Cakes that you so favour, Mick…but don’t drop the soap in the shower room, lads. ;-)
