Stourbridge’s Scott Evans steps up to the plate at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Friday night for the biggest fight of his young career.

The 20-year-old faces Chris Long in the main event for the vacant British Masters title, in only his seventh fight in the pro ranks.

He does so at five days notice, replacing Wolverhampton’s Rob Kenney, after an abnormality in his medical saw him pulled from the card.

Evans is a massive underdog against the formidable Long, who pushed Steve Saville and Dean Harrison close in 2008.

At over seven years his senior with more than four times the amount of ring experience under his belt, the welterweight will have his hands full.

But that takes nothing away from a massive opportunity for the undefeated youngster to make a name for himself.

He said: “It’s a massive step up for me, but opportunities come up in boxing and when something like this presents itself, you have to take it. I go in there and whatever happens it will be a great experience, that is the way I look at it.

“I am not a stupid fighter, I know how I want to tackle Chris and that is my focus. There is no point in going toe-to-toe with him – that is what he wants – so I need to impose my own style on him.”

Evans must also face up to the prospect of fighting a full 10 rounds should the fight go the distance, another first for the youngster.

Should he upset the odds and overcome his opponent, what a birthday present it would be – he turns 21 on Sunday.

But the last week has seen that milestone a million miles away from his thoughts.

He said: “It’s not ideal a week before the show, but I train hard anyway, so fitness wise there should not be a problem. It it goes the distance, it will be the longest I have been in there, but I will prepare for that, as any boxer does.

“I have a game plan and thats what I am concentrating on.”
