Edwards call to step up the pace
Tuesday 24th February 2009, 10:39AM GMT.
Dave Edwards insists Wolves must continue their “in your face” approach for the remainder of the season if they are to achieve their goal of Premier League football.
The recalled midfielder was man of the match in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Cardiff, after a typically lung-bursting performance that saw him seemingly cover every blade of the Molineux turf.
Now the Wales international believes the high-tempo first half-hour that threatened to blitz the Bluebirds must carry on in the 12 games left.
He said: “We were absolutely all over the pitch and that’s what we did at the start of the season. So we’ll have to get back to that now.
“We have Plymouth on Saturday and if we go into that game with the same work ethic we had on Sunday, we should get three points.”
Edwards has revealed he’s prepared to risk his place in the Wolves team by leaving himself exhausted for the next game.
He should have recovered in time for the visit of the struggling Pilgrims on Saturday, but the 22-year-old is so determined to impress boss Mick McCarthy that he’s prepared to leave himself with nothing in the tank for the following match.
The midfielder said: “You can’t leave anything in the changing room when you get your chance – you’ve got to give absolutely everything.
“Even if it gets to the point where you’re still tired for the next game, you have to put your hands up and say ‘fair enough, it’s a squad game’, but I gave it my all.
“I’m quite a fit lad, so hopefully I can recover quickly and be prepared to start again on Saturday if called upon. I just told myself I needed to harry and just try to get the ball back as quickly as possible and I felt it afterwards – my legs were pretty sore!
“But it was great to be starting and getting 90 minutes under my belt.”
Edwards stressed fans should look on Sunday’s draw as a positive result after automatic promotion rivals Birmingham – who go to Crystal Palace tonight – and Reading both lost on Saturday.
He said: “It would have been nice to win against Cardiff, but it was even more important not to lose.”

Did ok on Sunday but way too lightweight in my opinion would have jones over him at the mo. Quashie must replace Henry thought he was terrible on sunday.

I though Dave Edwards had a decent game. That 1st half we were awesome. Perhaps people would need to see it again to realise we were back to our best.
That said, we were clearly a bit dozey when we came out for the 2nd half. The heads dropped and the lads started to look tired.
We had enough chances in the 1st half to put the game beyond reach.
If we play like that again 1st half vs Plymouth we could be 4/5 nil up by half time.

Jones seems to have fallen out of favour (and we all know what happens when MM falls out with you)
Forwards did their job again, it is the defence which needs to sort its self out.

Edwards was good in the first half, but looked very tired in the second. Overall I felt he did well. Henry on the other hand was shocking.
I remember Jones and Edwards playing together earlier in the season, when Henry was suspended, and they looked good together – with Jones playing slightly deeper than normal.
They need to sort the centre of midfield out ASAP, if it means bringing someone in loan then so be it. But who is available?

If we would have made the first half an hour count – It would have been a much different game and put the pressure on Cardiff
Regardless of liking or loathing Mr Keogh; We need a strike partnership that can put away these chances and the wingers to provide a far better service than they have of late
As for the dozy defence – they are in need of a short sharp shock from the manager to wake them up! (Stop the cross/ pass – Get into em!)
NB* EVERYMAN in a Wolves shirt has to do his duty – MM has to drop the players who cant do and play the ones who can do!
No place to hide for anyone! NEXT!
UP THE WOLVES!

Sounds like he is trying to say that he put a good shift in as that means Mick won’t be able to drop him.
How about playing a left back in that position now Mick rather than a striker?

I did think Edwards had a great game on Sunday. He has done that before though and then not turned up for the next game. If he can do it consistently then he has got to be a first choice. Jones is a great ball player, but he doesn’t get stuck in like Edwards does.
Henry seems to have got gradually worse this season. He seriously needs a rest…….I suppose with Quashie replacing him, can’t think of anyone else, except maybe Foley. He played there one game last season (can’t remember who against) when someone went off injured and did an excellent job. But then our replacement right backs seem to be either Edwards or Henry at the moment……oh team selection, what a task!!

Who’s available Michael Tonge from Stoke always been a decent midfileder and can score goals, I think he is late 20′s so bags of experience at this level anyway.. I know someone is in for him lobut forgot who though

am i the only one that thinks kightly should be dropped and kyle reid given a run, everyone still loves him and sings his name but the defenders all know what he’s gunna do now, i can’t remember the last time he took someone on ans put in a good cross. and he summed it up on sunday when he couldn’t for the life of him keep his damn corners on the pitch!! not hard is it

8 RobWolf, It’s Forest who are trying to sign him.
Agree with you could be a decent bet,Certainly no worse than we already have.

Dan totally agree with ya he jsut looks disinterested now he’ll end up in the prem next season weather it be us or someone else, but i’d definatly give reid a chance and he has something to prove

#3 – Jones was injured for sunday!

It seems the whole team can ‘talk the talk’ but footballers and talking went out with Beckham. It’s on the pitch where it counts and we have heard these ‘soundbite battlecries’ before each and every game.
Score more goals than the other team. That’s how you win football matches.

12,Hands up if this is true,However he has not featured since Norwich so what exactly is this injury?

i think if we had a decent. confident defence, Henry wouldn’t drop as deep.
There appear to be a few problem areas at the moment.
1. Since Bobby Mimms(goal keeping coach) has gone to Blackburn, Hennesey looks shocking, was this a bigger loss than we thought?
2. Stephen Ward, hard working player. Is he a left back – I don’t think so. This is a problem area for us, eorge Friend, Matt Hill, Mark Little are all players better suited to that position.
3. Centre half – MM was a centre half, surely he knows a decent centre half wen he sees one? Darren Ward, Jason Shackell, Neil Collins, Christoph Berra Richard Stearman all MM signings and still doesn’t know best pairing
4. Midfield – probaly best midfielder at club was Mark Davies, back to fitness didn’t get a look in, then Potter, Quashie, Jones, Edwards, Henry. Surely one defensive midfielder one creative, works at most clubs.
5. Wingers – Kightly has been woeful and missing in action for 3 months! Yet he is still first nme on team sheet. Jarvis is 4 times the playe kightly is, Reid is performing better than kightly so why not Jarvis and Reid?
6. Strikers – Now come on SEB 21 goals and in a great run of form so who plays with him? Keough great busy player but with no end product, so is he a striker? Vokes plays and scores, Iwellumo great run of form before his scotland call up, since the miss…oooops! For me I would give SEB and Vokes a run.
There team sorted…Lets go and get promoted now!

13. Its difficult for a player not to “talk the talk”. When a journalist asks you a question, you answer it. Its part of the “duty” of a modern footballer. They are hardly going to say “I’m rubbish and should be dropped” or “we’ve got no chance of promotion.” If you don’t want to read players’ comments, you have the choice of not buying the newspaper or closing the web page.
Score more goals than the other team – yeah, its that simple. Let’s all apply to be managers.
As for Beckham, he’s about to break the England caps record, so I’d say if anyone has “talked the talk” and “walked the walk” its him. Its not his fault we still haven’t found enough players good enough to kick him out the squad (Theo’s injured).

When will mm drop henry,he aint no good for this league.

We’ve had a run of poor results but been playing the form teams. Our next few games will be telling. B’ham have some difficult fixtures and we need to pile on the pressure now and get away from them (B’ham). I agree Keogh is not a natural goal scorer and I would keep him for away games when we need his skill in harrying the opposition when we don’t have the ball and his hold up play when we do. I also think we need to play a recognised full back rather than Ward and give Kightly a rest, he’s quality but not the same since the injury.
