Charity giveaway by pub’s £1k winner
Tuesday 24th February 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
A kind-hearted regular at a Staffordshire watering hole won £1,000 in a pub competition – and immediately gave the whole lot to charity.
Drinkers at the Shoulder of Mutton in Hamstall Ridware, near Lichfield, were left stunned when Bill Withers, aged 61, refused to pocket the cash after hitting the jackpot at his local, donating it all to St Giles Hospice instead.
The modest grandfather, who lives in Blithbury Road in the village with his wife Rita, said: “You get to a point in life when you have enough.
“The competition had been going on for weeks and weeks at the pub, and when it got to serious money I decided that if I won I would give it to charity.”
St Giles Hospice is a really good cause and they need the support,” he added.
The contest saw regulars putting £1 into the pot every week for a raffle ticket. If their number matched one of those stuck to the backs of 52 playing cards, players could choose to take a £10 prize or turn over the card in the hope of revealing the joker and claiming the jackpot.
Landlord Chris Gerry said anticipation had been growing by the week at the Shoulder of Mutton as the stakes eventually reached £1,004.
“A big cheer went up when Bill said he was giving the winnings to St Giles,” he said. “We wrote the cheque out then and there.”
Mr Withers’ lucky streak is showing no signs of coming to an end, the game has started again at the pub and – remarkably – he had the winning number again on Thursday for the second week running.
But the semi-retired metal broker didn’t cash in the second time either – deciding instead to let another player have a go.
Mr Gerry said: “Bill’s luck is in at the moment – I’ve asked him to write down six Lottery numbers.”
Mr Withers handed over the cheque to St Giles Hospice on Friday.
