Baggies fan banned for attack on rival

Tuesday 24th February 2009, 11:25AM GMT.

BOOTON 2 DHA Baggies fan has been given a four-year football match ban after punching a rival supporter in the face. Lee Booton, aged 20, hit a 16-year-old Watford fan.

The attack took place outside The Hawthorns stadium, and the victim suffered a split lip and broken teeth, following a match between the two clubs which took place on April 12 last season.

Booton, of Bodenham Road, Oldbury, was convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm following a trial at West Bromwich Magistrates Court on February 2.

He was ordered to pay £500 in compensation to the victim and complete 120 hours unpaid community work when he appeared before magistrates in the town yesterday.

Booton was also given a 16-week prison sentence which was suspended for the next 12 months. The court heard the attack took place after his father, David Booton, clipped the shoulders of the victim’s father, knocking Mr Booton to the ground.

Lee Booton then ran over to the victim, accusing him of deliberately knocking his father to the ground.

Ms Val Hart, prosecuting, said: “When asked if he had been drinking, Lee Booton said he thought he might have been drunk at the time of the attack but could not be sure.

“He said he was not sure who pushed his father over, but was adamant he had not punched the victim, he had only shoved him.

“It has left the victim in a great deal of pain and he has since had to undergo at least eight different operations on his front teeth.”

Lee Booton, defending himself previously, denied the charge of assault, claiming it was self-defence.

Mr William McKeever-Charles, Chairman of the Bench said: “We do not take kindly to this kind of thuggish behaviour.”

Booton must also complete a 12 month supervision order. He must also surrender his passport when England play abroad.
